A Visit to Antigua

April 18, 2017

Antigua was another stop on the cruise Betsy and I took back in 2001 to celebrate our honeymoon.  Antigua impressed both of us as very beautiful — we especially liked the views of the coast that we had from Shirley Height, a part of the Nelson’s Dockyard National Park that we visited.

A Different 9/11 Video

October 11, 2016

I’ve always had a problem with the second day of our honeymoon cruise.  Don’t get me wrong — my Bride was as sweet and beautiful as ever, and the weather was absolutely perfect.  We were visiting the island of St. Maarten/St. Martin, which is part Dutch and part French.  The island seemed like a tropical paradise, and the people were very friendly and helpful.

So what was the problem?  The date — September 11, 2001.  We knew very little about what was happening in New York until later in the day.

I guess I’ve always felt a little guilty about enjoying such a beautiful setting on such a tragic day.  I wasn’t sure if I should post my pictures and make this video, but finally decided that since the pictures showed our experiences that day I would go ahead and post them.  The music used in the slideshow is “The World Turned Upside Down,” which somehow seems appropriate for that day.

I went to my archives for these pictures of the skies above and around St. Lucia in the Caribbean.  These photos are from the cruise Betsy and I took in September, 2001.

The day started with a beautiful sunrise over the sea (above) as we approached St. Lucia.

Clouds over St. Lucia. September 13, 2001.

We spent most of the day on a catamaran cruise along the coast.  In the early afternoon the clouds over the island seemed to  come down and touch the mountains.

Sunset in the Caribbean off St. Lucia. September 13, 2001.

The day ended as gloriously as it began, with a beautiful sunset as we headed back out to sea.

Our World: Marigot, St. Martin

Looking out to sea from Fort Louis, Marigot, St. Martin. September 11, 2001.

I’ve gone to my archives to get these photos taken in the ruins of Fort Louis in Marigot, St. Martin.  Betsy and I hiked to this hilltop ruin while on our Caribbean cruise in 2001.  Our ship had docked on the Dutch side of the island, and we joined a bus trip to the French side.

Marigot Bay, St. Martin. September 11, 2001.

The best thing about the old fort was the view it offered of the Caribbean and Marigot Bay.  The sky was a pretty blue and the water was a marvelous blue-emerald color.  All in all, the view was spectacular.  But that beauty was in many ways almost surreal.  These pictures were taken on 9/11.

I went to my archives to get this picture of the evening sky in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.  It was cloudy as the sun went down, but the sun still cast a nice reflection on the water among the boats anchored in the harbor.

This has been a very busy week with little time to work on the computer, so I’ve selected a picture from my archives for Skywatch.

The picture above was taken shortly after sunrise as our cruise ship approached the island of Antigua in the Caribbean.  I really like the peach/pink color on the forward edge of the clouds.

I went to my archives to find this picture of a sunset off the island of Antigua.  Sunrises and sunsets seem to be more spectacular at sea, and I consider this one to be very scenic.

Watery Wednesday #118: Marigot Bay

Wintery weather has kept us close to home for the past couple of weeks, so I went to my archives to get this picture of Marigot Bay on the island of St. Martin/Sint Maarten.  This island is split into two parts — one French, the other Dutch.  The picture was taken at ruins Fort Louis above Marigot, the capital of the French St. Martin.

Scenic Sunday #117: Paradise Point

The harbor at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, from Paradise Point. September 10, 2001.

When we took our Caribbean cruise, we had a port of call at Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.  While there we took a tram up to Paradise Point above the town.

Paradise Point has an observation deck and walking paths that give wonderful views of the harbor and out to sea.  This picture was taken looking down on the cruise ship dock.  Our ship is the one on the extreme right.

Scenic Sunday #112: Gros Piton

September 5, 2010

Gros Piton, Saint Lucia. September 13, 2001.

Gros Piton, and its smaller twin, Petit Piton, are iconic symbols of the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia.  They guard the entrance to the bay leading to the town of Soufrière on the west coast.  This picture was taken from a catamaran as it approached the bay after a cruise along the coast.
