Our Lilies (3)

I don’t know what happened to Wednesday.  I know the days are getting shorter, but yesterday was ridiculous.  We did our weekly grocery shopping and I planted some spring bulbs that came by UPS the other day, but that was about it.  Before I knew it, it was getting dark.

Since I didn’t have a chance to get out and take new pictures, I’m giving you another collage of the lilies we had in our garden this year.  Our lilies did very well this year and we thoroughly enjoyed each and every blossom.

Today (Thursday) we’re going to Hendersonville to check on my parents.  When I talked to them last night they were both in good spirits, but we will help them with some of the things they can’t do themselves anymore.  We’ll also run some errands for them and take them out for lunch.

I’ll be away from my computer most of the day today, but I’ll get around to visiting you as quickly as I can.

My World # 48: No Need to Mow Here

My world this week contains one less problem area to mow.  As I’ve mentioned before, the front of our yard had a very steep drop-off from the road.  We talked about several ways to avoid mowing that area, none of which seemed very practical.  Finally my bride suggested building a retaining wall and leveling the area.  You can see the result of her suggestion in the picture above.

I’m not sure when we started this project — it seems like we’ve been working on it forever.  The cashiers at Lowe’a got to know us very well.  I should have kept track of how many blocks and how many bags of dirt we brought home, but our hard-working Prius carried them all without any problems.

Finishing this wall and bed was our big Labor Day project and I’m happy to say that we got it finished.  Now I don’t have to worry about mowing that steep bank and we have room to plant some more sun-loving plants.  They’re already on order.

“Red sky at night, sailor’s delight”

We may not have many sailors here on the Plateau of Tennessee, but we have many people who can appreciate a beautiful sunset.  I snapped this red sky from the golf course behind our house on this past Sunday evening.

This is just a short note to let you know that I’m taking a break over Labor Day weekend.  I need to labor in the yard and get some other projects done.  Have a great weekend and I’ll see you Tuesday morning.

My World # 47: Autumn is Approaching

My world is getting prepared for autumn — at least the trees in the yard are.  I’m not sure I’m ready for autumn to come.  I have too many things on my summer to-do list that still haven’t gotten done!

The dogwood tree in the front yard is now sporting bunches of red berries.  While most of the leaves still have quite a bit of green in them, the picture below shows that some, at least, have become quite red.

But there is a good aspect of autumn getting closer.  Our reblooming iris have started to bloom again.  The picture below is of Autumn Bugler, which so far is the only one to bloom a second time this year.

I think it may have jumped the gun a bit, but it is still nice to see.

You Shouldn’t Try to Fool Mother Nature

Roses need sunshine.  Roses love sunshine.  Since we have lots of trees around our house, finding enough sunshine for our roses has been somewhat of a problem.  We had to move our roses from the first bed we made because there was too much shade, but now we’ve got them in front of the house where they get as much sunshine as our yard can offer.

HOWEVER, one corner of one of the rose beds is shadier than the rest of the bed.  To keep the symmetry of the bed I wanted to keep a rose there.  I figured that the rose there would be okay.

A few weeks ago a new cane appeared on the rose.  It grew and grew and grew.  For a while I thought it might be a sucker from below the graft, but it looked like the other canes.  It kept growing and growing.  When I was about to give up on it, a bud appeared and then a blossom that belonged to the rose bush.

To put things in perspective in the photo above, I’m 6-foot four inches tall and am standing on the same level as the rose bush.  And I’m looking UP at the blossom.  That rose wanted sunshine and was going to get to it.

The picture below shows what this rose bush, About Face, looks like under more normal circumstances.

Shopping with the ‘Old Folks’

George at Cafe Uno in Maryville, Tennessee. July 23, 2001.

It’s amazing how time flies!  It wasn’t too many years ago that I did most of my grocery shopping on Saturdays.  When my first wife, Elizabeth, became too ill to do the shopping, I would buy groceries on Saturday mornings since I didn’t have to work then.  I continued to do my grocery shopping on Saturdays after Elizabeth died.

Now Betsy and I do our grocery shopping on Wednesday.  Why, you ask?  Because our local Kroger store gives senior citizens a discount on Wednesday.  And if that’s not enough incentive, they also provide FREE COFFEE to seniors.

But recently there has been a change.  It wasn’t all that long ago that I got my feelings hurt if the checkout person asked ‘Do you qualify for the senior discount?’.  Now that same question makes me feel pretty good!!!

I’d like to think that I don’t look as old as a majority of the people in the store on Wednesdays, but perhaps I’m just indulging in wishful thinking.  I guess I might as well admit that I’m now one of those ‘old folks’.  But there is a bright side — on Wednesdays the store plays Big Band music over their sound system.  That’s a big improvement over other days of the week!!

I worked out in the yard most of the day yesterday. so my view of the world now is mostly limited to grass and flowers.

For that reason I thought I would share with you another collage of some of the lilies we enjoyed this year.

Our Lilies

We had a beautiful weekend here on the Plateau of Tennessee.  It actually felt more like autumn than summer, but I don’t want you to think that I’m complaining.  It was very nice working out in the yard and I tried to make the most of it.

Our lilies are all finished for the year.  The last ones bloomed several weeks ago, but I’ve been so far behind on my pictures that I haven’t done anything with them.  Yesterday I had a chance to work with my pictures and made several collages of the lilies that bloomed in our garden this year.  Five of our lilies are shown in the collage above.

I Don’t Have Enough To Do

Our front yard. April 2, 2009.

Our front yard. April 2, 2009.

The picture above was obviously taken several months ago — in early April, to be exact.  I’m showing it because I want you to note the drop-off from the road.  I’ve noticed as I’ve gotten older that the slope is getting steeper and more difficult to mow.

Our new retaining wall. August 13, 2009.

Our new retaining wall. August 13, 2009.

This second picture was taken a few days ago.  As you can see I have been building a retaining wall (it’s not yet finished).  I’ll then fill in the area between the wall and the road.  Our first thought was to have a level strip of grass, which would certainly be easier to mow.  But then we realized that we could put a pretty good flower bed up there.  That area of the yard gets more sun than just about any other part.  If you look closely you can see that we’ve already planted some ground cover at the extreme left of this area.

My parents are experiencing some plumbing problems and Dad won’t call a plumber until I look over the situation.  So Betsy and I will be making a trip to Hendersonville today (Monday).  Unfortunately we have to go to Knoxville (in the opposite direction!) first.  I have no idea how long we will be in Hendersonville or when we will get back home.

If I don’t post tomorrow (Tuesday) that will be the reason why.

The Joys of Home Ownership

July 28, 2009

fluorescentlightfixtures

I usually take part in the My World meme on Tuesday, but I’m skipping this week.

When I woke up yesterday (Monday) morning, I had my day all planned out.  The front lawn needed mowing, there were weeds in a periwinkle bed that needed to be pulled, and I had more work to do on a retaining wall I’m building along the road.  With luck I could get much of that work done before it got uncomfortably hot outside (summer has returned to the Plateau).

Then I went into the kitchen and turned on the lights . . . only half of them came on.  My day went down hill from there.

Don’t get me wrong — I really like our house and think it is just about perfect.  But the lighting in the kitchen is one thing that I would change if I could.  We have two eight-foot long fluorescent light fixtures in the kitchen, above a drop-down ceiling composed of  plastic ‘screens’.  To get to the fixtures the first thing that needs to be done is remove some of the screens.

I hoped against hope that the problem was just a bad bulb, but switching bulbs between the fixture that worked and the fixture that didn’t work produced no change.  The bulbs were fine.

The next possibility was a bad ballast.  We’ve had to replace the fixtures since we’ve lived here and we got our replacement fixtures at Lowe’s.  So we wrote down all the numbers we could find on the old ballast and headed to Lowe’s.  Of course the old ballast was no longer available, so we purchased an ‘equivalent’ ballast and headed back home.

I was able to get the new ballast into the fixture without any problems, but that’s when I noticed that the wires weren’t long enough to reach the two ends of the fixture.  Much experimentation showed that there was no way I could attach the ballast to the fixture (necessary to ground the ballast) and get the wires to reach both ends of fixture.  So I did some splicing, taped all the splices well, and put everything back together.  I put the bulbs back into the fixture and flipped the switch.  All the lights came on . . . FINALLY!!!  Now all I had to do was put the drop-down ceiling back.

Of course once that was done, the day was practically over.  Needless to say, I didn’t get much done on that list I had in mind when I woke up.

Maybe we should consider renting.
