It’s Going to be Hard to Leave

Big Rose Bed, Fairfield Glade. May 23, 2009.

The picture above shows some of the roses in our large rose bed.  That bed contains 22 roses, but not all of them have bloomed yet.  But I can say that scenes like this make all the work very worthwhile.

Betsy and I are going to be visiting friends for a couple of days.  Judy and Charlie have a cabin in the western North Carolina and we’re going over there later today.  We met Judy and Charlie when Betsy and I lived in Hendersonville.  They still live there, but we have remained close.

This visit is for relaxation and to give Betsy and Judy an opportunity to ‘talk’.  Whether the talking will leave time for eating and sleeping remains to be seen.

I don’t think this trip will include any waterfall visits, although there are several in the area.  I’m taking some reading and may even get in a nap or two.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Moon over the ocean at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. May 6, 2009.

Moon over the ocean at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. May 6, 2009.

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  Last week a couple hundred people shared their view of the sky.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

Last week I posted a picture of a moonrise over the ocean at the beach while we were on vacation.  We were treated to a beautiful show for three nights, and of course I took more than one picture.  I couldn’t resist posting another picture of the moon over the ocean.  We were enthralled by the reflection on the water, which you can better see by enlarging the photo above.

Lower Bridal Veil Falls, DuPont State Forest, North Carolina. May 10, 2009.

This is my post for the Scenic Sunday meme, which shares beautiful scenes from around the world.  To see more Scenic Sunday posts, or to join and show your own pictures, click HERE.

The picture above was taken in the DuPont State Forest near Brevard, North Carolina.  Betsy and I had been there in 2006 and had seen three of the four major waterfalls.  But we didn’t get to the fourth waterfall, Bridal Veil, because the hike was just too long for us to make in the time we had available.

When we were planning our trip to the beach this year I was checking waterfall web pages to find waterfalls we could visit either going to or coming home from the beach and I happened to access the web site of the Friends of DuPont Forest.  They were offering a shuttle bus tour of three of the waterfalls, including Bridal Veil, on the weekend we were returning from the beach.  It was too good of an opportunity to see another waterfall, so we our plans accordingly.

The picture above shows the lower part of Bridal Veil Falls, which gets its name from the way the water spreads out over the rocks.

On the day we were there it was possible to walk up some of the dry rocks to the upper free fall.  The upper falls is the location used in the movie “Last of the Mohicans” when the main characters walked behind the waterfall to hide from the Indians.  Since I didn’t have my hiking boots with me I didn’t try to go behind the upper falls, but I did get close enough to take the picture below.

There were so many nice things about our vacation at the beach that it’s hard to pick the one thing that stands out.  I’ve already mentioned the beach and the seafood and Betsy talked about some of the waterfalls we saw to and from the beach.

But one very special thing was the show Mother Nature put on for us the last two nights we were at the beach.  We had a beautiful moonrise right opposite the balcony of our room.  The moon and the reflection on the ocean were absolutely gorgeous.

Of course I didn’t have a tripod with me, so the picture above is not as good as it could be.  Still, it’s a nice reminder of a couple of special evenings.

I’ve posted another picture of the moon over the ocean on my photo blog, Photos by Senior Hiker.  You can see it by clicking HERE.

Shrimp boat off the coast of North Carolina. May 6, 2009.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday, a weekly meme created and hosted by 2sweeetnsaxy of Eyes, Mind, Heart.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

The picture above was taken from the balcony of our room at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  We could see at least one shrimp boat off the coast just about every day.  We liked to think that the boat was busy catching our dinner for that evening.

We thoroughly enjoyed the beach and we enjoyed the seafood even more, if that is possible.  Ocean Isle is just north of Calabash, North Carolina, and  Little River, South Carolina.  Both of those towns are fishing ports and it’s possible to buy seafood fresh seafood right off the boats.  Betsy and I prefer to let someone else buy and prepare the seafood.  Both towns have excellent seafood restaurants and we have favorites in both towns and visit them each year.

An ocean view and fresh seafood — two wonderful things about our watery world.

The picture above was taken on Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  I honestly don’t know what I like most about this picture — the sky, the beach, or the ocean.

I selected this picture because Betsy and I are getting ready to head back there for a week.  We try to get there each year, and although we’ve been on the road quite a bit this year, we decided to go back.  The beach is nice, but the seafood is irresistible!  Fortunately our yard and garden can get along without us for a few days.

I plan on doing a post tomorrow (Saturday) morning, but then we’ll be away from our computers for a week.

Shunkawauken Falls

Shunkawauken Falls, Columbus, North Carolina. May 20, 2008.

Shunkawauken Falls, Columbus, North Carolina. May 20, 2008.

My last post showed a view of the western North Carolina countryside from White Oak Mountain.  In the post I mentioned that there was a waterfall behind me as I took that picture.  So I thought I would show you the waterfall today.

Shunkawauken Falls consists of multiple drops and cascascads totaling hundreds of feet, but it is impossible to see the entire falls from a single  vantage point.  The falls is mostly on private land, but the 150 foot drop shown above is the main fall in the upper drop and is visible from  White Oak Mountain Road.

The waterfall was known as Horse Creek Falls until 1891, when the name was changed to honor an Indian chief from the area.

The view from White Oak Mountain, North Carolina. May, 2008.

Betsy and I go to the beach each year and we try to arrange the trip to and from the beach in such a way that we can visit waterfalls on the way.

Last  year on the way back home we visited Shunkawauken Falls near Columbus, North Carolina.  Shunkawauken Falls is high up on White Oak Mountain and we found a pullout near the waterfall.

The waterfall was beautiful and we enjoyed our visit.  I may show the waterfall at a later time, but it is behind me as I took this picture of the beautiful western North Carolina countryside.  You can make out some of the buildings in the town of Columbus on the left side of this picture.

Sunset Beach, North Carolina. June, 2001.

Sunset Beach, North Carolina. June, 2001.

As I post this on Saturday evening our part of the Plateau is under a Winter Weather Advisory.  We could get an inch or two of snow.

While Betsy is delighted at the prospect I am decidedly less enthusiastic.  I’ll admit that I’m looking forward to warmer weather.  With that in mind, I decided to post the above picture as my contribution to Scenic Sunday.

Betsy and I try to get to the beach each year for several days.  We usually go to the area around Little River, South Carolina.  We go there because I lived in Little River for three years before moving to Tennessee and meeting Betsy.

This particular picture was taken in June, 2001, on Sunset Beach, North Carolina, just north of Little River.  Sunset Beach is an island off the coast which is primarily residential in nature.  Most of the houses are single family and it is much less ‘touristy’ than Myrtle Beach.

It is possible to walk down the beach beyond the homes.  Once past the homes it’s easy to forget that their are other people around at all.  There is just the sea, the sand and the dunes.  This picture shows the grass on some low dunes above the high tide mark.  Sunset Beach may not quite be a tropical paradise, but it is pretty close.

I CAN Enjoy Snow

December 8, 2008
George playing in the snow with his children. January, 1977.

George playing in the snow with his children. January, 1977.

I was going through some old pictures yesterday and came across the picture above.  I’ve taken so much grief from Betsy about not liking snow that I thought I would post it in my own defense.

The picture was taken in January, 1977.  (You can tell from the hair that it was taken many years ago!).  At that time I was living in Black Mountain, North Carolina.  Black Mountain is in the mountains of western North Carolina and is absolutely beautiful.  We didn’t get much snow at all, so when it did snow it was quite an occasion.

The two children are my daughter Kelly (age 5) and son Bob (age 8).  We had just finished making the snowman and were getting ready to welcome their mother when she came out to admire our work.  (Bob always has had a tendency to overdo things!!).

We had lots of fun after that snowstorm.  Perhaps my current dislike of snow has less to do with the snow and more to do with the increasing years.  NAH —  that’s not possible, is it?
