Scenic Sunday #135: Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach, North Carolina. June, 2001.

There are several island beaches along the North Carolina coast near the South Carolina border.  I became familiar with them when I lived in Little River, South Carolina and Betsy and I go back to that area each Spring.

We now go to Ocean Island Beach, but the next island down, Sunset Beach, is also very beautiful.  This picture of Sunset Beach was taken in June several years ago.

In September, while visiting Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Betsy and I toured the Hensley Settlement.  The Hensley Settlement was established in 1904 by Sherman Hensley and was occupied until the establishment of the park in 1951.  I took this photo while walking along a fence-lined lane on top of Brush Mountain.

Scenic Sunday #131: Schooner Alliance

The schooner Alliance, Yorktown, Virginia. June 19, 2007.

I must confess that I love tall ships and consider them very beautiful and thus scenic.  This is the schooner Alliance, which sails out of Yorktown, Virginia, from April thru October of each year.  The Alliance is a 105-foot three-masted schooner and offers 2-hour river cruises during the season.

We weren’t able to take a cruise on the Alliance when we were in Yorktown, but I think the possibility of a cruise is a great reason for going back.

Scenic Sunday #130: Tallulah Gorge

Tallulah Gorge State Park, Tallulah Falls, Georgia. October 14, 2009.

This picture was taken on a rainy October day from the south rim of Tallulah Gorge in Georgia.  If you look closely just above the center of the photo, you’ll see a suspension bridge.  The suspension bridge leads from one rim to the other.  All you need to do to cross the gorge is to go down approximately 450 steps on one side — and up approximately the same number on the other side!  I’ve done it twice, but for some reason it takes me longer to go  up than it does to go down!

This picture was taken on the grounds of the Dillard House, a fabulous restaurant in Dillard, Georgia.  If you like Southern cooking, you really should visit the Dillard House at least once.

This picture was taken looking toward Rabun Gap n the mountains of northern Georgia.

Scenic Sunday #128: Ocean Isle Beach

After the bitterly cold weather we had a few weeks ago, Betsy and I decided we needed a change.  So when we learned that our favorite inn at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, had a special deal on ocean view rooms for December, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit the beach and have some delicious seafood.

Two of our favorite restaurants were closed for the season, but that just gave us an excuse to try some places that we hadn’t visited before.  Is it my imagination or is seafood really so much better-tasting at the seashore?

We arrived at Ocean Isle Beach late Monday afternoon, December 20, to be greeted by this beautiful sight from the balcony of our room.  This alone made the trip worth while, but over the next two days we were to find several other reasons to be thankful that we made the trip.

Scenic Sunday #125: Biltmore Estate

Biltmore House, Asheville, North Carolina. November 23, 2010.

Betsy and I went to Asheville, North Carolina, last month to see the Christmas display at Biltmore House.  Biltmore, which was built from 1889 to 1895 by George Vanderbilt, has been called America’s Largest Home.  It was modeled on three châteaux built in 16th-century France and has 4 acres of floor space, 250 rooms, 34 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces.  The basement contains a swimming pool, gymnasium and changing rooms, a bowling alley, servants’ quarters, and kitchens.

The grounds of the 125,000-acre estate were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who created New York’s Central Park.  He not only developed acres of gardens and parkland, but in his efforts to protect the environment and reclaim over-farmed land, Olmsted established America’s first managed forest.

The estate contains ‘only’ 8,000 acres today.  Much of the estate’s forested mountain land (86, 700 acres) was sold to the federal government in 1914 to form the basis for Pisgah National Forest.

The view from the South Terrace of Biltmore House, Asheville, North Carolina. November 23, 2010.

Even though the estate is much smaller than it was a hundred years ago, the house is in a beautiful setting as the top picture shows.  The view from the South Terrace of the house is still spectacular, as can be seen in this second photo.

Scenic Sunday # 124: On Top of the World

The view from Mount Mitchell, North Carolina. October 22, 2010.

Last week Betsy and I made a quick trip to Asheville, North Carolina.  We went primarily to see the Christmas decorations in the Biltmore House, but we also took a ride up the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We drove to Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet.

It was fairly late on a cloudy afternoon when we reached the observation deck at the peak.  The mountains seemed to be reaching up to the clouds for as far as we could see.

The interplay of sun and clouds made for some interesting patterns on the smaller mountains around Mount Mitchell.

Every once in a while the clouds parted enough to let some blue sky peek through.

Scenic Sunday #121: Cataloochie Valley

Mist in the Cataloochee Valley, North Carolina. October 20, 2010.

I posted about the elk we saw in the Cataloochee Valley of the Smoky Mountains a couple of weeks ago.  But our visit to the valley was scenic for more reasons than the elk.  The morning of our visit was foggy and misty, which showed one explanation for the name of the mountains surrounding the valley.

The picture above was taken at the meadow along Ranger Station Road where we saw the largest herd of elk.  The picture is looking east past the meadow.

This second photo is taken from another meadow on the same road.  This meadow is past the Caldwell House and this photo looks northeast.

The southwest view from the same meadow gave this picture of the mountains amid mist and clouds .

Scenic Sunday #120: Autumn Reflections

Santeetlah Lake, Robbinsville, North Carolina. October 21, 2010.

Betsy and I came home from our stay in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, on the Cherohala Skyway which goes over the mountains from North Carolina to Tennessee.

The autumn colors were beautiful, but I also had the chance to see those colors reflected in various bodies above.

The picture above was taken at Santeetlah Lake near Robbinsville, North Carolina, before we reached the skyway.

Tellico River, Tellico Plains, Tennessee. October 21, 2010.

As we neared the Tennessee end of the skyway, we turned off to go with Patti and Neal to Bald River Falls near Tellico Plains, Tennessee.  After visiting the falls, we drove along Tellico River Road as we headed toward home.  The sun was beginning to drop behind the mountains, putting parts of the river in shadow.  I found a pullout so I could stop and capture this second picture.
