Betsy and I were treated to this wonderful sunset on the afternoon we got back from our Thanksgiving trip.  We stopped by the 12th tee of the Druid Hills golf course to enjoy the view and to get these photos.

Sunsets are often spectacular here on the Plateau, and this time of year the sun lines up very well the fairway on that hole.

On this day the color of the sky was gorgeous, even after the sun dropped below the horizon.

SkyWatch Friday: Plateau Evening Skies

I’ve posted several sky photos from our trip out west, commenting on the pretty sunsets out there.  But we can have pretty skies here on the Plateau of Tennessee as well.

I went out to the front yard one evening last week after the sun had dropped below the ridge to the west of our house.  The yard and road in front of the house were in deep shadows, but the clouds in the sky to the east were a beautiful red/gold.

Betsy and I were impressed — not always favorably — by the flat landscape in some of the western states.  But we found that one advantage to a flat landscape is sunsets that are as fantastic — if not more so — than those we have here in the mountains.  I captured the scene above as we were driving across Oklahoma.

As the sun was setting ahead of us as we drove through the Oklahoma countryside, I noticed clouds forming in the eastern sky.  Although the base of the clouds were in darkness, the sky above was still blue, and the tops of the clouds were lit up by the light of the setting sun.

As we were driving toward Weatherford, Oklahoma, on our trip west, we were treated to a beautiful display of light and clouds in the evening sky.  I simply had to pull off the interstate to snap this picture of a sunbeam showing us the way.

The yard has been keeping me very busy, so I went to the archives for this week’s post.

When we’re on vacation I like to sleep in (in truth I like to sleep in any morning, but that’s another story), but sometimes getting up in the early morning hours is worth the effort.

One such time was when we were at Mount Nebo in Arkansas in  December, 2008.  We got up before sunrise and drove to Sunrise Point to watch the sun come up.  Shortly after we got there we were treated to the scene in the picture above.  The horizon turned a gorgeous orange-gold with the sun beginning to peep above the mountains on the other side of the valley.

A few minutes later the star-burst and fiery clouds announced the arrival of the sun.

In another few moments the sun cleared the mountain tops and began its climb into the sky.  That was definitely worth getting up to see.

The sun went down over land when we were at the beach last week, but the color of the sky at sunset was still gorgeous.  I missed the sun this evening, but the sky was still beautiful.

I went to my archives to get this picture of the evening sky in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.  It was cloudy as the sun went down, but the sun still cast a nice reflection on the water among the boats anchored in the harbor.

I’ve mentioned before that the weather wasn’t exactly cooperative during our trip to Mount Nebo in Arkansas.  The day we drove there was partly cloudy, but when we went to Sunset Point we found that the sun was setting behind a thick bank of clouds.  But those same clouds gave us the beautiful sight in the picture above.

Later the clouds parted enough to allow us to see this golden glow from our cabin.  Sunsets from Mount Nebo are always special.

Scenic Sunday #142: Foggy Morning Sunrise

April 11, 2011

The weather wasn’t exactly cooperative when we went to Arkansas this year.  I think we had more rain, fog and mist than we’ve ever had.  But even those conditions made for some interesting pictures, at least as far as I was concerned.

Friday morning Betsy and I got up to see the sunrise.  But when we got to Sunrise Point we found clouds in sky and fog in the valley below.  As the sun came up we could see a band of light between the clouds and fog, and the bright orange color told us that the sun was indeed rising.

View from Sunrise Point, Mt. Nebo State Park, Arkansas. April 1, 2011.

As the sun got higher the light got brighter.  The clouds took on a scalloped appearance and the fog in the valley began to break up.  In many ways it seemed that we were all alone at the top of the world.

On a more personal note, later today (Monday) I have an appointment with a neurosurgeon.  A recent MRI showed signs of ‘chronic fairly severe degenerative disc disease’ and ‘moderate to severe facet arthritis’.  I’m the first to confess that I don’t know what this means as far as future gardening and hiking is concerned, but any prayers and good thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
