Down Memory Lane: Serenity Falls

June 17, 2010

We’ve been having showers and thunderstorms off and on over the past several days.  While that means that the weeds are winning in all of the flower beds, it has given me time to work on some pictures that have never been properly posted.

One folder contained pictures taken at Serenity Falls back in March, 2009.  We discovered Serenity Falls in the autumn of 2008 when we were visiting waterfalls around Cosby, Tennessee, on ‘the quiet side of the Smokies’.

At Serenity Falls we found a beautiful waterfall as well as some rental cabins.  One of the cabins was right at the base of the waterfall.  That, of course, was too big a temptation for Betsy and me, so we just had to book a few nights at Serenity Falls.

These pictures were from our first stay at Serenity Falls.  We enjoyed it so much that we went back in March of this year as well.  It’s hard to imagine a more relaxing place to stay.

Watery Wednesday #92: Little Missouri Falls

June 16, 2010

Little Missouri Falls, Langley, Arkansas. February 22, 2010.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

In March of this year, during our trip to Arkansas, Betsy and I visited Little Missouri Falls.  The falls is really more of a cascade than a true waterfall, but it is still a pretty sight.

To get to Little Missouri Falls we had to drive through campground at the Albert Pike Recreation Area.  This was this campground that was devastated by the flood last weekend, killing 20 campers.  This is a reminder that our watery world can be dangerous as well as beautiful.

Watery Wednesday #90: Panther Falls

June 2, 2010

Panther Falls, Rabun County, Georgia. June 23,2009

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

Some of the nicest waterfalls Betsy and I visit are relatively small, but involve a pleasant hike through a forest, often along a pretty creek.  Last June we visited Panther Falls in Rabun County, Georgia.  The hike was about two miles on a pretty June day.  And what made the day even nicer was that we had the waterfall to ourselves when we got there.  There’s nothing nicer than hearing water splash over the rocks while sitting next to a pretty girl.

My World: Sandstone Falls

April 27, 2010

Sandstone Falls, Hinton, West Virginia. April 23, 2010.

This is my post for the My World meme.  It is hosted by Klaus, Ivar, Sandy, Wren, and Fishing Guy.  To learn more about our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.

As I mentioned in my last post, Betsy and I visited some waterfalls in southern West Virginia last week.  One of those waterfalls was Sandstone Falls near Hinton, West Virginia.

The picture above shows a part of Sandstone Falls.  The waterfall is not particularly high — there are many that are higher — but it is by far the widest waterfall in West Virginia at over 1,500 feet.

The picture above was taken from the boardwalk at Sandstone Falls.  Although the boardwalk offers many wonderful views of the falls, it is impossible to see the entire falls at once.

Sandstone Falls from the overlook. August 23, 2010.

Later in the day we crossed the river and visited an overlook high on the opposite bank.  This second pictures gives a pretty good indication of the masiveness and power of the water going over the falls.

Get Any Bites?

April 26, 2010

Fisherman at Sandstone Falls on the New River, West Virginia. April 23, 2010.

When I saw this fisherman last Friday, I immediately thought of my friend the Fishing Guy.  FG is quite a fisherman living up in northeastern Ohio, although I’m not sure he has quite this backdrop at his favorite fishing holes.

Betsy and I were at Sandstone Falls on the New River Gorge National River.  We had driven up to southern West Virginia to spend a couple of days seeing waterfalls in an area we had visited before.

This picture shows just a very small portion of Sandstone Falls.  The falls is not high, but it is spectacular, extending all the way across the very broad river.

I’m sure Betsy or I will be posting more pictures of Sandstone Falls in the future.  But I hope FG will someday have the opportunity to fish the New River at Sandstone.  I can’t guarantee a great catch, but I can guarantee some fantastic scenery.

Watery Wednesday #84: Fall Creek Falls

April 21, 2010

Fall Creek Falls, Fall Creek Falls State Park, Tennessee. April 21, 2008.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

The picture above, of Fall Creek Falls here in Tennessee, was taken in 2008.  If you’ve visited here for any length of time,  you know that Fall Creek Falls State Park is the absolute favorite park for Betsy and me.

I’m posting this picture on Watery Wednesday because April 21 is the anniversary of our first ‘big’ date back in 2001.  We spent the day there talking, hiking, seeing waterfalls and getting to know each other.  That day was also memorable because that was when I got my first kiss from Betsy.

We’ve gone back to Fall Creek Falls every year to enjoy the magic and we’ll be going back again today.  Who knows, I might even get another kiss!

Remembering South Carolina Waterfalls

April 10, 2010

Waterfalls visited on our way to the beach. May, 2009.

Since we got some rain on Thursday, I was able to get some work done on my pictures and worked with a folder of pictures taken last year on our way to the beach.  When Betsy and I travel we try to arrange our trip so that we can take a break by visiting some waterfalls along the way.  This is a great plan as long as we’re traveling through an area where there are waterfalls!.

Fortunately we have to travel through mountains to get from our house to the beach.  Last year we made a couple of stops near Westminster, South Carolina.  We had to do some bushwhacking to see Fall Creek Falls and Upper Fall Creek Falls.  The trail along Brasstown Creek was better defined and led to three waterfalls, although we did have to do some creek hopping to visit a fourth.

There’s something magical about seeing waterfalls one day and the ocean the next.  We’ll be doing it again in a few weeks.

Watery Wednesday #82: L’Eau d’Or Falls

April 7, 2010

L'Eau d'Or Falls, Tallulah Gorge State Park, Georgia. October 14, 2009.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

L’Eau d’Or (Water of Gold) Falls is another of the major waterfalls in Tallulah Gorge State Park in Georgia.  This waterfall can be viewed from the North Rim Trail.  I took this picture on a cloudy, rainy day, so there is not much ‘gold’ in the water.

Watery Wednesday #81: Hurricane Falls

March 31, 2010

Hurricane Falls, Tallulah Gorge State Park, Georgia. October 14, 2009.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

Hurricane Falls is one of five major waterfalls in Tallulah Gorge State Park in Georgia.  This is one of our favorite places to visit and hike.  The picture above was taken in October, 2009.  We hiked to be base of Hurricane Falls, but this picture was taken from from the South Rim of the canyon.

Down Memory Lane: Dunlap, Tennessee

March 25, 2010

Waterfalls near Dunlap, Tennessee. April 21, 2009.

Betsy and I often go looking for a particular waterfall.  In those  cases we know the name and location of a waterfall and it is just a matter of driving or hiking (or both).  We follow directions in a book, from an online site or the GPS unit to our destination.  That’s been the way we’ve found the majority of the waterfalls we’ve visited.

But every once in a while we stumble on a waterfall unexpectedly.  This serendipity makes the experience seem even more delightful than it would otherwise be.

Last year on our way back from Texas we planned to stop by Fall Creek Falls State Park here in Tennessee.  We would be going there on April 21, the anniversary of our date (and first kiss) at Fall Creek Falls.

We have been to Fall Creek Falls many times, but had never travelled there from the south.  We were near Dunlap, Tennessee,  heading up the Plateau when, as we were rounding a curve, we saw a waterfall just off the road.  It didn’t have a lot of water going over the fall, but it was very tall.  Naturally we had to stop and get some pictures.  We later learned that this was Possum Falls.

What made this experience even more interesting is that we saw three more waterfalls within the next two miles.  We had no idea they were there before we stumbled onto them.  If we had been driving any faster, we probably would have missed them all.
