Scenic Sunday #87: Sunrise on Mount Nebo

March 14, 2010

Sunrise from Mount Nebo, Arkansas. December 2, 2008.

If you’ve come to this blog on a regular basis, you know that Mount Nebo in Arkansas is a favorite place for Betsy and me.  We’ve made several trips there, always staying in ‘our’ cabin at the top of the mountain.

Mount Nebo gives us a chance to forget about the cares of the world, to relax, hike, and visit waterfalls.  It also gives us a wonderful place to see the beginning and the ending of the day.

The photo above was taken at Sunrise Point on Mount Nebo.

Scenic Sunday #86: Hoarfrost on the Mountain

March 7, 2010

Hoarfrost on Mount Magazine, Arkansas. February 23, 2010.

This picture was taken about two weeks ago on Mount Magazine in Arkansas.  This is another of our favorite hiking places in Arkansas.  Of course the fact that the lodge in the state park has an excellent restaurant with a terrific view doesn’t hurt either.

The day we were there was cold — just about perfect for visiting waterfalls and hiking.  But as we got higher up the mountain (Mount Magazine is the highest point in Arkansas) the temperature kept dropping.  When we got to the loop road at the top of the mountain we began to notice hoar frost in some of the trees.  Each time the road climb a few feet, more of the trees supported a coat of hoar frost.

When we came to an overlook we stopped to get some pictures.  The morning was cloudy, but the trees covered with hoar frost nestled among the bluffs and rocks of the mountain made a very beautiful scene.

I’m grateful for the beauty that can be found at any time in our wonderful world.

Scenic Sunday # 84: Mount Nebo, Arkansas

Sunset on Mount Nebo, Arkansas. December 2, 2008.

The picture above was taken at Sunset Point in Mount Nebo State Park, Arkansas.  Betsy and I are leaving for Mount Nebo early Sunday morning.  We have a favorite cabin on the mountain top and we always stay there when we visit the mountain.  This will be our sixth visit.  Can you tell that we like it there?

There are a couple of waterfalls on the mountain and several nice hiking trails, so I don’t think we’ll run out of things to do.  If we do decide to get off the mountain there are plenty of other waterfalls and beautiful scenes in the area.

I won’t be doing any new posts until we get back home.  I will have my iPod Touch with me, and if we can get internet service, I’ll visit as best I can.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to places that are special to my Beautiful Bride and me.

Scenic Sunday #82: After the Storm

February 7, 2010

In front of our house, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. January 31, 2010.

Perhaps I shouldn’t post this after a weekend during which so many people had to endure a blizzard, but I can’t resist.

This was the picture in front of our house a week ago.  The storm had passed and Sunday morning presented us with a bright blue sky.  The sun glistened off the ice on the trees and the new-fallen snow was clean and white.  We don’t often get a scene like this in Tennessee, so it certainly qualifies as scenic to us.

I’m grateful that after all the storms of life there is always a new day full of hope and promise.

Scenic Sunday #81: Snow!

January 31, 2010

The golf course behind our house, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. January 30, 2010.

Since Friday afternoon we’ve had about 5 inches of snow, topped by up to an inch of ice, followed by more snow.  It’s the biggest storm we’ve had in several years and one member of the family is definitely happy about it.

The picture above was taken on the golf course fairway behind our house (we’re definitely going nowhere by car for a while!).  Even I will admit that there is a stark beauty to the leafless trees.

Betsy enjoying the snow in front of our house. January 30, 2010.

But the most scenic part of the day was the smile on my Beautiful Bride’s face as she ventured out to enjoy the snow.  That smile is bright enough to lighten the whole day.

Scenic Sunday # 80: Castillo de San Marcos

Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine, Florida. August 4, 2009.

I’ve been to St. Augustine, Florida, America’s oldest city, several times.  There are many interesting things to see and do in St. Augustine, but one of the most fascinating places to visit is Castillo de San Marcos, the Spanish fort that was constructed to protect the town.  Construction began in 1672 and Castillo de San Marcos in the oldest masonry fort in North America.  It is also the only 17th century fort still standing.  The fort was never captured in spite of several attacks from Spain’s enemies.

Castillo de San Marcos contains a great deal of history, but it is also a very scenic place to visit.

I’m grateful for all the fascinating history of this country that has been preserved for us to enjoy today.

Scenic Sunday # 79: Arkansas Sunrise

January 17, 2010

Sunrise Point, Mount Nebo State Park, Arkansas. December 4, 2008.

Mount Nebo State Park in Arkansas is one of our special places to visit.  We have a favorite cabin on the mountain top and try to get there each year.  Two of the nice features of the park is that there are perfect places to view sunrises and sunsets.

This picture was taken in December, 2008, at Sunrise Point.  If you look closely on the left of the picture you can see the Arkansas River in the valley below.  But the main feature of this photo is the sun, rising over the mountains to the east, looking like a star.

Scenic Sunday # 78: Bali Sunset

Sunset on the island of Bali. June, 1987.

I decided to combat the frigid temperatures we’re enjoying by looking through some of the photos on my computer which had been scanned from slides taken many years ago.

The picture above helped me feel somewhat warmer.  It was taken in June, 1987, at Kunta Beach on the island of Bali.  I was on a team of college professors who were on our way to China to tech for the summer.  It was decided to leave the States a week early so we (and our spouses) could make a side trip to Bali before entering China.  Scenes like this fit all the stereotypes of what the South Pacific should be like.

The picture above was scanned from a slide.

Scenic Sunday # 75: Sunset Beach

December 20, 2009

Sunset Beach, North Carolina. June, 2001.

We’ve had several days of cold rain here on the Plateau of Tennessee, with a little bit of snow and ice thrown in just to keep us guessing.  The rain has not been scenic, but it has been COLD.

I just had to do something to feel warmer, so I looked through some of our beach pictures.  Betsy and I visit the beach in North Carolina just about every year.  The picture above was taken at Sunset Beach, North Carolina.  One nice thing about going to the beach in May is that we often have it to ourselves.

Scenic Sunday # 73: Double Happiness

This may not appear to be much to you, but it is very beautiful and scenic to my beautiful bride, who just loves snow.  We woke up Saturday morning to an inch or two of the white stuff and Betsy was over-joyed.  Unfortunately (for her) the snow probably won’t be around for long, but she is ever-hopeful that more will soon come.

Jen's calendar and the almanac.

The mailman brought a second happy event for the day.  Jen, who blogs on unglazed, had a giveway a week of so ago and I was fortunate enough to win.  The gift is a 2010 calendar of photos Jen has taken.  To say that each photo is beautiful is really an understatement.  Jen takes wonderful pictures of the birds in her area and I encourage you to visit her site if you haven’t done so.  Jen also included a copy of the Farmer’s Almanac.  Jen knows how much Betsy likes snow and wants her to know when the snow will arrive!

Thanks again, Jen.
