Skywatch Friday: Moon Over the Glade

I must admit that I’m a sucker when it comes to seeing the moon in a blue sky.  I can’t resist taking a picture (or several).  Last Friday the moon was almost overhead as the sun was setting.  The clouds to the east had a pretty peach glow from the setting sun.

Sometimes the clouds got in the way, but even then the scene was pretty enough that I kept snapping away.

A few minutes later the clouds and sun were both gone and I concentrated on the moon itself.  I must admit I like the craters I captured at the boundary between the dark and light sides of the moon.

Betsy enjoying snow in the mountains of Virginia. She was as beautiful then as she is now.

Someone is having a birthday on Sunday.  I can’t tell you who it is, but I will give you a couple of hints —

Hint #1: She still likes snow.
Hint #2:  She’s my Beautiful Bride.

Skywatch Friday: Plateau Evening Sky

Betsy was on the back deck Wednesday evening and said that I should come out to see the sky from the fairway out back.  I went out back with my camera and found that Betsy was right — the sky was beautiful.

The sun had dropped below the Plateau, but the sky was still blue.  The clouds and contrails to the west were a beautiful pink.  The sky wasn’t exactly red, but I was reminded of the saying, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight”.

When I turned around and looked to the east, the clouds were a beautiful orange-gold.  It truly was a gorgeous evening.

SkyWatch Friday: St. Lucia Skies

I went to my archives for these pictures of the skies above and around St. Lucia in the Caribbean.  These photos are from the cruise Betsy and I took in September, 2001.

The day started with a beautiful sunrise over the sea (above) as we approached St. Lucia.

We spent most of the day on a catamaran cruise along the coast.  In the early afternoon the clouds over the island seemed to  come down and touch the mountains.

The day ended as gloriously as it began, with a beautiful sunset as we headed back out to sea.

Betsy’s Sky Photos

I’ve been telling Betsy for some time that she should show some of her sky pictures on this meme, but she always has some excuse for not doing so.  So today I’m posting some  of her photos for her.

When we go some place I usually do most of the driving since Betsy is often busy on her computer (we have mobile wi-fi for when we travel).  We went to Asheville a couple of weeks ago, and while was driving Betsy kept an eye on the sky.

There were severe thunderstorms around us, although we didn’t run into any of them.  The picture above was taken west of Knoxville just before we started up the Plateau.

We got up on the Plateau just in time to catch the sun dropping below the horizon.  That’s when Betsy got this picture of the sun and colorful sky.

Even after the sun dropped below the horizon, the clouds were still a beautiful red-gold.  It’s hard to believe that Betsy got all of these pictures from a moving car on the interstate.

Things have been fairly hectic around here and I haven’t had a chance to get out with my camera as much as I would like.  So I went to my archives to get this picture of the moon in an early evening June sky over Fairfield Glade.  The picture was taken in June, 2010, and I like the fact that there is still some blue in the sky with that almost full moon.

SkyWatch Friday: Ocean Isle Sky

When we are at the beach Betsy and I enjoy the sand and the water — and the sky.  Sometimes the blue of the ocean comes close to matching the blue of the sky.  The white of the breakers in the ocean and the clouds in the sky only serve to emphasize the blue.

I’m sorry for being behind in visiting your blogs, but Betsy and I went to visit Dad yesterday.  He was better than we’ve seen him in several weeks.  He still has trouble completing his thoughts at times, but he was walking better yesterday than he has in quite some time.  He enjoys being outside, so the nice weather is a blessing.  Dad will be 100 in August.

SkyWatch Friday: Storm Front Coming

On our way to Asheville, North Carolina, in early April, Betsy and I stopped at a rest area along I-40 in the  mountains of western North Carolina.  The day up to that point had been sunny and bright, but the weather forecast was calling for rain.  While at the rest area I noticed the clouds over the ridge line.  The sky was still blue, and there were still white clouds in the sky, but the gray clouds were moving in.  We did, in fact, get rain later in the day.

SkyWatch Friday: Mount Nebo Sunrise

As I’ve mentioned several times, Betsy and I love to watch sunsets from ‘our’ cabin on Mount Nebo in Arkansas.  It’s nice to sit on the patio and enjoy the setting sun.

It’s possible to see sunrises on Mount Nebo as well, but it involves more effort.  Not only do we need to get up very early, we need to drive to Sunrise Point.  But we do that at least once each time we visit Mount Nebo.

All of these pictures were taken on the morning of March 2, 2012.  Yes, we did have to get up early, but I think it was all worth it.

As many of you know, Betsy and I love Mt. Nebo in Arkansas.  We’ve gone there at least once each year for several years now, always staying in the same cabin.  When we go in February or March, we can enjoy the sunsets from the patio of the cabin.  I took this picture at sunset in March of last year.

SkyWatch Friday: Morning in the Mountains

I would have trouble deciding which is more magnificent — mountains or the sky.  When they are together I am often struck by the sheer wonder of the scene before me.  Often I can only think “The Heavens Are Telling the Glory of God”.

Such was the case early one November morning last year when we stopped at Hazel Mountain Overlook on the Skyline Drive in Virginia to take in the sight above.
