I’ve been working on pictures taken when we were at Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina this past May.  We’d been to Ocean Isle Beach before, but the weather this time was absolutely gorgeous.  The sky and ocean were both a brilliant blue.  It was a perfect spot from which to contemplate our beautiful, watery world.

When Betsy and I were in Yorktown, Virginia, we were near the waterfront one evening when we saw the schooner Alliance sail down the river.  I’ll have to admit that she looked beautiful to me, but then I’ve always been fascinated by sailing ships.

The Alliance is 105 foot three masted gaff-rigged schooner, which sails twice daily from Riverwalk Landing Pier in Yorktown from May thru October.  The rest of the year it sails in the Caribbean.

The Alliance was built in 1995 in Palm Coast, Florida, and was brought to Yorktown in 2005.  She has a diesel engine as well as the full set of sails and can accommodate 49 passengers on daysails or 12 overnight passengers.

On our way to Florida last week Betsy and I visited some new waterfalls in north Georgia.  One of the nicest we saw was Falls on Waters Creek, near Turners Corner, Georgia.  The picture above was taken along a Forest Service road, but we were able to get a closer view by hiking down to the large flat rock seen in the center-right of this picture, which can be enlarged by clicking on it.

I really like the way the trees frame the waterfall in this Watery Wednesday view.

Watery Wednesday # 46: Sliding Rock

The pretty little fall shown above is Sliding Rock in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina.  Sliding Rock gets its name from the fact that sliders patiently line up and wait their turn to ride the chilly water down the 60-foot flat, sloping boulder.  At the bottom of the slide they splash into an eight-foot deep pool and swim a few strokes to the shore, get in line, and do it all over again.

Sliding Rock is a natural waterslide fueled by 11,000 gallons of water flowing down the rock each minute.  Since the stream comes down from the mountains, the water temperature is always on the cool if not down-right cold.

Watery Wednesday # 45: Little River Inlet

The picture above was taken on the Intracoastal Waterway in Little River, South Carolina.  I lived in Little River for four years and enjoyed my time in the area.

Little River is a fishing village north of Myrtle Beach.  As you can see from the background in the picture, the city in encroaching on the village.  Those homes weren’t there when I moved to Little River, but were built before I left.

The waterway is a little busier now as well.  When I lived there most of the boat traffic was fishing vessels or pleasure craft.  Now two casino boats are homeported in Little River.  They use Little River Inlet to access the ocean for gambling cruises.

Betsy and I visit Little River about once each year, but we go for the seafood, not the gambling.

Watery Wednesday # 44: Ammons Creek Falls

Last week I shared Holcomb Creek Falls, which we visited on our anniversary trip to northeast Georgia.  After enjoying Holcomb Creek Falls we hiked another quarter-mile through the woods.  This part of the hike was uphill, but it led us to Ammons Creek Falls.  Ammons Creek Falls is not as tall as Holcomb Creek Falls, but it is still very pretty.

On the first afternoon of our anniversary trip last month, Betsy and I some hiking near Clayton, Georgia.  We hiked the Holcomb Creek Trail through a beautiful forest setting.  Some of the hemlock and poplar trees were three feet in diameter.

We hiked for about a half mile through the woods to reach our destination, which was the beautiful waterfall shown above.  Holcomb Creek Falls drops 120 feet with boulders the size of automobiles strewn about it’s lower levels.  We had this magnificent waterfall all to ourselves while we were there.

It was as we started back to the car that we realized we had a problem.  The hike to the falls, as I said, was very pleasant.  It was mostly downhill, which meant that the hike back was mostly uphill.  I’ll just say that we both slept well that night.

On our anniversary trip we went through the Smoky Mountains along US 129 (Tail of the Dragon) and N.C. 28.  This part of the Smoky Mountains is about as far off the beaten path as it is possible to get, but the views are definitely worth while.

Our route crossed Twentymile Creek, and it looked so inviting that we had to stop and investigate.  We obviously did not find a waterfall, but the cascades along the creek caught our attention and are definitely worth a Watery Wednesday mention.

This week I have been kept busy in the yard and didn’t have an opportunity to capture any watery photos.  So I’ve gone to the archive and gotten this picture from Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina.  This is where Betsy and I have gone for our beach vacation for the past three years.  We’re attracted by the beauty of the ocean and beach and the fact that in May we can practically have the beach to ourselves.

When we came back from our friends’ cabin in North Carolina on Saturday, Betsy and I had our GPS bring us home by the back way.  That usually means  we will see some beautiful scenery and, with luck, will see some waterfalls.

Saturday we saw both and more.  We made a detour through the Nantahala Gorge and stopped at the Nantahala Outdoor Center near Wesser.  Our guidebook said there were some waterfalls (they are actually rapids) nearby and we did some hiking to see what we could find.  What we found were rafts and kayaks shooting the rapids at the end of their run down the Nantahala River.  It was a beautiful day and it looks as if every one is having fun.  What could be more fitting for Watery Wednesday?
