Watery Wednesday # 96: Unicoi Falls

July 14, 2010

Unicoi Falls, Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee. October 15, 2010.

I’ve mentioned before that Betsy and I like to take the back roads when we travel, especially when we’re traveling through the mountains.  We usually travel the speed limit so the co-pilot has time to look around.

Many — if not most — Tennessee roads through the mountains have turnouts at fairly regular intervals.  That’s a good thing and we take advantage of them fairly often.

Last October we were traveling in the Cherokee National Forest in eastern Tennessee, when Betsy spotted Unicoi Falls as we rounded a curve.  There wasn’t anything I could do about it at that moment, but I spotted a turnout just ahead.  I pulled over and walked back to get this picture.

I realize there are times when a person has to take the Interstate.  But when possible — slow down, take a back road and enjoy the scenery!

Watery Wednesday #95: Tellico River

It’s been hot and dry here on the Plateau in Tennessee.  I can’t think of anything more refreshing on days like this than to sit on a rock and soak my feet in a fast-flowing mountain river.  This is the Tellico River as it flows through the Cherokee National Forest in eastern Tennessee.

Watery Wednesday #94: Stormy Morning at the Beach

A storm coming ashore, Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. May 7, 2009.

When we go to the beach we hope for lots of sunshine and good weather.  But even when the weather doesn’t always cooperate the beach can be beautiful.  I got this picture of a storm coming ashore at Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina.

Watery Wednesday #93: Over the Falls

Kayaker at Baby Falls, Tellico River, Tennessee. June 18, 2010.

Last Friday I decided that Betsy needed to get out of the house for a while, so we took a drive to the Tellico River, another of our favorite spots here in Tennessee.  There are some waterfalls that can be seen from the road, so I felt Betsy would not have to do much walking.

One of those roadside waterfalls is Baby Falls, a pretty little 15-foot drop in the Tellico River.  There were swimmers enjoying the plunge pool, but what caught our attention was a group of kayakers shooting the falls.

By the time I got into position to take pictures there was only one person left to shoot the falls.  I got this series of shots as he went over the brink.

I didn’t have time to change the settings on my camera so I didn’t get a shot of the kayak at the base of the falls, but the kayaker was successful in shooting the falls, he landed upright and paddled across the plunge pool before continuing downstream.

I must admit that it looked very exciting, but I think I’ll continue to enjoy waterfalls while standing on solid ground!

Watery Wednesday #92: Little Missouri Falls

June 16, 2010

Little Missouri Falls, Langley, Arkansas. February 22, 2010.

In March of this year, during our trip to Arkansas, Betsy and I visited Little Missouri Falls.  The falls is really more of a cascade than a true waterfall, but it is still a pretty sight.

To get to Little Missouri Falls we had to drive through campground at the Albert Pike Recreation Area.  This was this campground that was devastated by the flood last weekend, killing 20 campers.  This is a reminder that our watery world can be dangerous as well as beautiful.

Watery Wednesday #91: Repulse Bay

June 9, 2010

Repulse Bay, Hong Kong. June, 1987.

I was looking through some archived photos and came across this picture, taken in Hong Kong when I first visited in 1983.  Repulse Bay is a popular beach area in Hong Kong, although the bay is nearly empty in this picture.

There are a couple of stories behind the name of the bay.  We were told that the bay got its name from the fact that the British warship HMS Repulse was stationed in the bay in the late 1840s.  The other story is that the bay was used as a base by Chinese pirates who were driven out (repulsed) by the British army in 1841.

Regardless of how the bay got its name, I think it is a beautiful place and worth sharing on Watery Wednesday.

The picture above was scanned from a slide.

Watery Wednesday #90: Panther Falls

Some of the nicest waterfalls Betsy and I visit are relatively small, but involve a pleasant hike through a forest, often along a pretty creek.  Last June we visited Panther Falls in Rabun County, Georgia.  The hike was about two miles on a pretty June day.  And what made the day even nicer was that we had the waterfall to ourselves when we got there.  There’s nothing nicer than hearing water splash over the rocks while sitting next to a pretty girl.

Watery Wednesday #89: Enjoying the Beach

Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.

One of the nice things about going to the beach in May is that we often have the place to ourselves.  A walk along the beach allows us to enjoy sand, blue skies, blue seas and white caps.  Not much could be better than that.

Watery Wednesday #88: Ocean Isle Pier

When we were at Ocean Isle Beach the Islander Inn was within sight of the pier.  I enjoyed walking along the beach and watching the surf come in under the pier.  The pier itself makes an interesting pattern, and if you look closely you can see the spray caused by incoming waves hitting the pilings.

Watery Wednesday #87: Ocean Isle Beach

Betsy and I were fortunate enough to spend several days at the Islander Inn in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  We had an ocean view room with a balcony that enabled us to enjoy the beautiful scene of the ocean pictured above.

This was the fourth year we’ve been to the Islander Inn.  But with views like this, I seriously doubt that it will be the last year that we visit.
