Watery Wednesday 15

December 23, 2008

fallcreekfalls020421There’s water going over the falls, so I hope this will qualify as an entry.  Betsy and I collect waterfalls and this is the one that started it all.

This picture of Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee was taken April 21, 2001.  A day trip to Fall Creek Falls State Park was our first big date.  Betsy and I had gone to dinner a couple of times, but that was it.

This date turned out to be a big one.  I hadn’t even held Betsy’s hand before then, but I did as we walked in the park.  I even got my first kiss before the day was over!

Fall Creek Falls is one of five major falls in the park.  It has a drop of 256 feet, which makes it one of the falls with the greatest vertical drop east of the Rocky Mountains.  As you can see, it drops into a huge sandstone amphitheater.

That date to Fall Creek Falls not only led to our marriage, but also to our waterfall collection.  We’ve now seen a total of 287 different waterfalls and are still finding more to visit!

My World 10

December 22, 2008

The rain and then the cold have kept me inside most of this past week, so my world has been pretty much our house and preparations for Christmas.  That’s what I want to share with you.

Our Christmas tree is a memory tree.  Many of the ornaments commemorate significant events in our life together (such as our first Christmas or new home) or souvenirs from our travels (such as ornaments from Williamsburg.
christmashome01

Although the tree is the largest of our decorations, we do try to remember the true meaning of Christmas.  Christmas is so much more than shopping, presents or parties.

christmashome021

We have a fireplace, but it doesn’t have a mantel, so our stockings are hung on the bookcase with care.  I hope Santa will find them and that he will decide that we’ve been good enough to fill them.  You don’t think those stockings are too large, do you?

christmashome03
You can see the nicest feature of our great room (at least in winter) on the left of this last picture.  A fireplace was one of Betsy’s requirements for a house and we both certainly love this one.  It gets a lot use in cold weather.  Not only does it help provide heat, but it gives us a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxing cup of tea.

Christmas in a Far-off Land

December 22, 2008

The manger scene in the picture below may seem a little unusual.  (You can click on it for a larger version if you like.)  It’s obviously a manger scene — the three men on the right are paying homage to the baby held aloft by the woman in the center.  On the left is a shepherd with one of his animals.

chinachristmas01

But the scene does look unusual.  The animal on the left looks more like a long-necked rabbit than a sheep, and the three men on the right are unlike any wise men I had seen before.

The most unusual thing about this manger however, is its location.  The picture was taken in December, 1994, on the shopping floor of a hotel in Tianjin, People’s Republic of China.

I spent the academic year 1994 – 95 teaching in Tianjin, and I was frankly quite surprised to see this manger on public display.  The hotel catered to Chinese visitiors, not foreigners.  I was the only westerner in the place when this picture was taken!  At a time when public displays of Christmas symbols is under attack in some places here at home, I find it more than interesting that this public display could be found in communist China over ten years ago.

There were more secular displays of Christmas as well.  The picture below was taken in front of a store front restaurant in Tianjin.  It looks as if the reindeer have left Santa stranded, but that is definitely Santa in his sleigh.

I find it amazing and comforting that Christmas has spread to even the most likely parts of the globe.  I had a wonderful Christmas in 1994, and I hope all of you have a wonderful Christmas this year and for many years to come.

What’s That Strange Light in the Sky?

December 20, 2008

Saturday morning Betsy and I woke up to a strange light in the east.  At first we were confused as to the source of this light, but we finally discovered that it was something called ‘The Sun’!

Sunrise in Fairfield Glade. December 20, 2008.

Sunrise in Fairfield Glade. December 20, 2008.

One reason for our confusion is that we have had six days of rain and overcast skies.  Now don’t get me wrong — we really need the rain and I’m glad it finally came (better late than never)!  But after six days of clouds it was certainly nice to see something else in the sky.

Unfortunately, it didn’t last.  About an hour after taking this picture the clouds were back, and the rains returned after that.  But it was nice to see the sun even briefly.

Six Random Things

December 20, 2008
chinastudents

My first class of Chinese students. Tianjin, PRC, August, 1987.

I have been tagged by my blog-friend Neal at Photographic Memories to take part in the “Six Random Things About Me” meme.  So here are six random things about me (not necessarily in any order):

1.  When I went to summer orientation before my freshman year in college, my advisor told my father that I was not college material.  Less than seven years later that same man hired me to teach at the same college!

2.  I took my first teaching job in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1963 because they paid a whopping $5000 per year!

3.  When my parents and little sister came to visit us in Montreat, North Carolina, Janet (my sister) was floored that Billy Graham knew my name.

4.  After teaching mathematics for 20 years, the Dean of the College assigned me to teach a course in computer science.  My qualifications?  The junior high my son attended had a computer!

5.  I have taught English as a second language in China on four separate occasions.

6.  I can’t go out to work in the yard without my iPod.

These are the rules:

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.
5. Let each person know they’ve been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

I’m afraid I’m going to let Neal down.  I just don’t feel comfortable tagging people at this time.  (Perhaps after I’ve been at this a while that will change.)  For now, if you would like to tell us six things about yourself, consider yourself tagged.

SkyWatch Friday #23

December 18, 2008

skywatch3

SkyWatch Friday is a meme that gives people a chance to share pictures that show the sky.  There are many beautiful pictures posted from all around the world, and to see more you can click on the logo above or click on SKYWATCH.

Last Friday (December 12) a local television station said that the full moon visible that night would be the brightest in some fifteen years.  I went out on the deck to see for myself, but all I could see was some brightness behind thick clouds on the horizon.

moonfairfield08121203

I kept checking the sky throughout the evening and the sky started to clear as the night wore on.  We finally had a clear sky, but by then the moon could only be seen through the branches of trees behind the house (of course!).

I got a couple of pictures centered on the moon itself, but I found that I like this picture of the moon seen through the branches much better.  So this is what I’m sharing as my watch on the sky this day.

A Trip to Hendersonville

December 18, 2008

Betsy and I went to Hendersonville on Tuesday to be with my parents.  The weather was foggy and rainy most of the day which added to our travel time both ways, but we were glad to be able to make the trip.

Mom and Dad, Spring, 2001.

Mom and Dad, Spring, 2001.

As I mentioned before, Dad is 96 and Mom is 88.  Both are now legally blind, but they both want to stay in their home.  Betsy and I try to help them as much as we can, although part of that help has to be long distance help.

When I was growing up I thought my Dad could do just about anything.  So there is a certain amount of sadness when I need to help him write checks, activate his credit card, or find things in a store.

But there is also joy associated in being with Mom and Dad.  They are both in good spirits and remain active in their church.  And we can see the basic goodness of many people when we are with Mom and Dad.  We take them out to lunch and take them shopping when we go over.  Tuesday we took them to one of their favorite restaurants and a waitress saw us approaching the front door.  She came out and held the door for Mom and Dad and greeted them warmly.  Our friend Judy tells us that the staff at another restaurant treat Mom and Dad like royalty when they eat there.

Mom and Dad have shopped at the same grocery store for over 40 years.  When they get to the checkout there is one clerk who comes around to empty there basket for them.  As she does this she says what each item is and asks if they want that item.  She then helps Dad sign his check (the cash register makes out the check) and sends them off with a good word.

I wish I could thank all of these kind people personally.  But I am glad that I can at least acknowledge their kindnesses, especially at this time of the year.

Watery Wednesday

This is my first entry for Watery Wednesday, but you can check out other photos on this theme by clicking on the logo above or at http://waterywednesday.blogspot.com/.

The picture below was taken on Antigua, in September, 2001.  Betsy and I were on a belated honeymoon cruise in the southern Caribbean.  We visited six different islands on that cruise, but I think Antigua was definitely one of my favorites.
antiguacoast0201
I especially liked the coast near Shirley’s Height, where this picture was taken.  The coast line, except for a few cactus, was mostly barren and dropped sharply down to the ocean, which was an incredible blue.  I’m not sure how high the cliffs are, but while we were there we looked down on a helicopter flying along the coastline!

The  contrast between the red-brown cliffs, the deep blue water, the bright white surf and the lighter blue of the sky is one reason I like this part of Antigua so much.  I hope you like it too!

I thought I would share an after dark view of Christmas here in the Glade.  I think this is a beautiful area any time of the year, but it becomes magical at Christmas with all the lights.

The Glade sends a bright welcome as you enter.

Something to Cheer Up Betsy

December 15, 2008

Yesterday was not a good day for Betsy.  Her Titans lost their football game by one point!  And to make matters worse, it is the middle of December, there’s precipitation coming, and the temperatures are in the 50’s.  Betsy wants snow!  How can it snow with temperatures like this?  It’s depressing!!!

I really want to cheer Betsy up, but I’m not sure how to go about doing so.  I certainly can’t change the outcome of the football game, and I don’t have the talent necessary to make it snow on demand.

decksnow

About the best I can do is post this picture to give Betsy hope.  This picture was taken on the deck of our house in February, 2006, and it shows that we actually can get a nice snowfall here in the Glade.  So don’t give up hope, Betsy!

One more thing.  Although I don’t know how to make it snow outside, I do know how to make it snow on this blog.  So if the weatherman won’t cooperate, Betsy can watch it snow here!
