Fort Smith National Historic Site

July 7, 2011

The uniforms of soldiers involved in Fort Smith's history. June 11, 2011.

One of the first places we visited on our recent trip west was Fort Smith National Historic Site in Arkansas.  During our visit we  were fortunate to be able to hear a presentation by a park ranger on the history of Fort Smith.  The ranger was supported by the re-enactors wearing the uniforms of soldiers during the different periods of the fort’s history.

Fort Smith was established in December, 1817, by a company of the U. S. Rifle Regiment (the soldier on the extreme left in the photo above).  The fort was established to maintain peace between the Osage and Cherokee Indians.  The original fort was abandoned in 1824.

In the 1830s Fort Smith became a supply depot for Indians and soldiers (next two soldiers in white) moving westward along “The Trail of Tears”.  In 1838 a new Fort Smith was constructed near the site of the first.   This was a masonry fort, but it was also used primarily as a supply depot.

Confederates (the soldier in butternut in the middle of the group above) took possession of Fort Smith when Arkansas seceded in April, 1861, but was recaptured by Union troops (next two soldiers) on September 1, 1863.

In 1872 the Federal Court for the Western District of Arkansas took over the fort.  The barracks were modified to serve as a courthouse and jail.  During this time the fort was a base for U. S. Marshals (the man on the extreme right).

The re-enactors described the uniforms they were wearing and gave a firing demonstration of their weapons.  The early muskets certainly made for an interesting show.

Scenic Sunday: Arkansas Sunrise

June 5, 2011

Sunrise from Sunrise Point, Mount Nebo, Arkansas. December 4, 2008.

The yard has been keeping me very busy, so I went to the archives for this week’s post.

When we’re on vacation I like to sleep in (in truth I like to sleep in any morning, but that’s another story), but sometimes getting up in the early morning hours is worth the effort.

One such time was when we were at Mount Nebo in Arkansas in  December, 2008.  We got up before sunrise and drove to Sunrise Point to watch the sun come up.  Shortly after we got there we were treated to the scene in the picture above.  The horizon turned a gorgeous orange-gold with the sun beginning to peep above the mountains on the other side of the valley.

A few minutes later the star-burst and fiery clouds announced the arrival of the sun.

In another few moments the sun cleared the mountain tops and began its climb into the sky.  That was definitely worth getting up to see.

SkyWatch Friday: Mount Nebo Sunset

The setting sun from Sunset Point, Mount Nebo, Arkansas. March 28, 2011

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

I’ve mentioned before that the weather wasn’t exactly cooperative during our trip to Mount Nebo in Arkansas.  The day we drove there was partly cloudy, but when we went to Sunset Point we found that the sun was setting behind a thick bank of clouds.  But those same clouds gave us the beautiful sight in the picture above.

Later the clouds parted enough to allow us to see this golden glow from our cabin.  Sunsets from Mount Nebo are always special.

Scenic Sunday #142: Foggy Morning Sunrise

April 11, 2011

The weather wasn’t exactly cooperative when we went to Arkansas this year.  I think we had more rain, fog and mist than we’ve ever had.  But even those conditions made for some interesting pictures, at least as far as I was concerned.

Friday morning Betsy and I got up to see the sunrise.  But when we got to Sunrise Point we found clouds in sky and fog in the valley below.  As the sun came up we could see a band of light between the clouds and fog, and the bright orange color told us that the sun was indeed rising.

As the sun got higher the light got brighter.  The clouds took on a scalloped appearance and the fog in the valley began to break up.  In many ways it seemed that we were all alone at the top of the world.

On a more personal note, later today (Monday) I have an appointment with a neurosurgeon.  A recent MRI showed signs of ‘chronic fairly severe degenerative disc disease’ and ‘moderate to severe facet arthritis’.  I’m the first to confess that I don’t know what this means as far as future gardening and hiking is concerned, but any prayers and good thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

On Top of the World

April 7, 2011

The view from Sunrise Point on Mount Nebo, Arkansas. April 1, 2011.

Betsy and I got up a couple of mornings to go to Sunrise Point on Mount Nebo to see the sunrise.  The first time it was so cloudy and foggy that we couldn’t even see the sun.

On our last morning it was nice and clear on top of the mountain, but when we got to Sunrise Point we were looking down on clouds and fog in the valley below.  It really wasn’t the view we were expecting, but I thought the predawn scene was pretty neat.  We felt on top of the world looking down at those clouds.

Watery Wednesday # 134: Garvan Gardens

April 6, 2011

Garvan Gardens Falls, Hot Springs, Arkansas. March 28, 2011.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

Garvan Gardens is a beautiful woodlands garden near Hot Springs, Arkansas.  The main attractions are the beautiful flowers and shrubs, but Garvan Gardens also has some wonderful water features, including Garvan Gardens Falls in the picture above.

Unfortunately that part of Arkansas is going through a drought this year, so the streams and pools have less water than they did the first time we visited.  But they still make a beautiful picture among all the shrubbery.

Last week Betsy and I went to Mount Nebo State Park in Arkansas.  We’ve been going there at least once a year since I retired in 2006.  We have a favorite cabin that we rent, where we can enjoy beautiful views, fires in the fireplace, and the birds and deer that pass by.

As is usual with us, we can rarely go directly to a destination.  This year we stopped by Garvan Gardens in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on our way to Mount Nebo.  We had been there in 2009 and enjoyed the daffodils, so since we were a few weeks later this year, we stopped by to see the tulips.  As you can see from the picture above, the tulips and azaleas put on a beautiful display.

'Our' cabin on Mount Nebo, Arkansas. March 28, 2011.

Our cabin at Mount Nebo sits near the rim of the mountain top and provides a perfect spot to sit and relax and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.

We made a day trip to nearby Mount Magazine State Park to have lunch in their wonderful restaurant.  It was a gray, cloudy, dismal day, which was just fine for eating, but very bad for picture-taking.

Since we now have a geo-tracker that we take with us just about every place, I can show you are journey thanks to Goggle Earth.  You can click to enlarge the map for easier reading.

Last week Betsy and I spent several days at our favorite cabin on Mount Nebo State Park in Arkansas.  Mount Nebo is a flat-topped mountain, and ‘our’ cabn sits near the rim on the southwest side of the mountain.  We have a marvelous view of the valley below, as can be seen from the picture above.

Down Memory Lane: Mount Nebo Waterfalls

July 1, 2010

I’ve mentioned several times how much Betsy and I like going to Mount Nebo in Arkansas.  We always stay in a beautiful rustic cabin on the edge of the mountain where we can enjoy the fantastic views.

But as you might expect, if we keep going back there have to be some waterfalls as well.  There is a Waterfall Trail that leads down the mountain not too far from the cabin.  I usually hike that trail at least once during our stay and, if we spend the day on the mountain, will often hike it along with one of the other trails.

The Waterfall Trail leads past one pretty falls, Upper Nebo Falls,  on its way to the main drop, Mount Nebo Falls.  Since both are near the top of the mountain the water flow can be low during much of the year, but they are pretty in the early Spring.  The collage above was made from pictures I took of the waterfalls during our visit in March, 2009.
