Icy Branches — Blue Sky

One thing about March is that you never know what the weather is going to be like.  It can be Winter one day and Spring the next.  Sometimes you can have both Winter and Spring on the same day.  The photo above, which I captured a few years ago does a pretty good job of capturing both seasons in one picture — ice covered branches against a beautiful blue sky.

Return to Mt. Nebo

My Beautiful Bride and I have been going to Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas for almost 20 years.  We’ve missed going a time or two, but we try to get there in February so that we can enjoy the sunsets from ‘our’ cabin on top of the mountain.  This picture was taken in 2016, but it does a good job of showing why we keep going back.  It’s our little piece of heaven on earth.

Maryville Sunset

I captured this picture of the setting sun back in April while visiting Mark and Robin in Maryville, Tennessee. Sometimes I just get lucky!

London Bridge

Sometimes I’m in the right place at the right time to get what I think Is a good photograph. One such time occurred when I was in London way back in 1993. I was walking along the river Thames toward the new London Bridge as the sun was beginning to set. This is what I saw.

Oh What a Beautiful Morning

It’s been a while since My Beautiful Bride and I forced ourselves to get up before dawn to walk the back nine of the Druid Hills golf course, but we’ve talked about getting started again. Not only is the exercise good for us (and allows us to be socially distanced when out of the house) but the scenery is often absolutely gorgeous. This picture was taken on a January morning a few years ago. What a magnificent way to start the day!

The Solar Eclipse

October 3, 2017

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

Betsy and I had ringside seats for the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. Crossville was in the zone of totality, and it was a very big deal as you can see from the t-shirt My Beautiful Bride is wearing.

Clouds were forecast for the afternoon of the big event, but they fortunately stayed away enough for us to enjoy the show. It was quite an experience to see the moon start to block out the sun.

In some ways I wish I had better camera equipment, but I was delighted to get the pictures that I did get.

It was truly amazing to see the sun becoming a smaller and smaller sliver of light.

Then the sun was completely covered. It became night as solar lights came on and birds stopped their singing. I was able to capture the sun’s corona shining around the moon.

As the sun began to emerge from behind the moon I was able to capture a ‘diamond ring’. That was really a special moment for me.

As the moon continued to move away, a sliver of sun appeared in the sky.

As the moon moved even more, the sun became a crescent.

Our world got lighter as more of the sun became visible. Soon the magical once-in-a-lifetime event was over.

Mornings at the Beach

Betsy and I really enjoy our visits to Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  For the past few years we’ve been going in both May and early December.  (We can’t stay away from that delicious Calabash seafood for too long!)

Although the weather is usually warmer in May, we enjoy our December visits because we get a good view of the sunrise from the balcony of our room at the Islander Inn, as you can see from the photo above.

So, although we are on vacation, both Betsy and I make an attempt to get up each morning at sunrise.

On some mornings there is a thick bank of clouds on the horizon,

although patches of blue were often soon seen in other parts of the sky.

Some mornings all we could do was stand in awe at the beauty of God’s creation.

Early to Rise

June 15, 2016

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

“Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

I wonder if they still teach that saying from Old Richard’s Almanac?  I’ve given up on the wealthy and wise part of the saying, but my Beautiful Bride and I are hoping the healthy benefits of early rising hold true.

A nearly full moon greeted us as we left the house one early morning. May 23, 2016.

It isn’t always easy to get out of bed (and out of the house) before the crack of dawn, but we try.  Fortunately we are often greeted by a beautiful sight such as the one above.

Some days are cloudy, but there is still beauty to be found.

Clear skies have a spectacular predawn beauty of their own.  The colors are amazing.

In addition to beautiful skies, we are usually treated to the songs of birds as we make our way around the golf course.  The peace and serenity can be felt.

Good Morning World! The sun popping over the mountains. May 4, 2016.

And we know we can count on the sun to rise over the mountains to the east and show us the way home.
