On Top of the World

April 7, 2011

The view from Sunrise Point on Mount Nebo, Arkansas. April 1, 2011.

Betsy and I got up a couple of mornings to go to Sunrise Point on Mount Nebo to see the sunrise.  The first time it was so cloudy and foggy that we couldn’t even see the sun.

On our last morning it was nice and clear on top of the mountain, but when we got to Sunrise Point we were looking down on clouds and fog in the valley below.  It really wasn’t the view we were expecting, but I thought the predawn scene was pretty neat.  We felt on top of the world looking down at those clouds.

This has been a very busy week with little time to work on the computer, so I’ve selected a picture from my archives for Skywatch.

The picture above was taken shortly after sunrise as our cruise ship approached the island of Antigua in the Caribbean.  I really like the peach/pink color on the forward edge of the clouds.

I went to my archives to find this picture of a sunset off the island of Antigua.  Sunrises and sunsets seem to be more spectacular at sea, and I consider this one to be very scenic.

One of the joys of going to the beach in December was being able to watch a sunrise from the balcony of our room.  The sky was painted gorgeous colors before the sun broke through the clouds on the horizon.

This picture of the morning sky was taken at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, on December 23, 2010.

When Betsy and I visit the beach in May, there is always daylight when we go to dinner and even afterward.  Things were much different in December.  The sun had already set one evening as we were going to dinner, but the glow in the sky and the reflection in the water caught my eye as we drove through Sunset Beach, North Carolina.  On that evening, at least, the name of the beach was very appropriate.

Betsy and I were on our way to Crossville late one afternoon a couple of weeks ago when we noticed the pink clouds near the setting sun.  Fortunately we found a parking lot where we could get a good view of the sun and the clouds, and where I captured this image.

We were treated to a spectacular sunrise on our last morning at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  We had an ocean view room at the Islander Inn, and the sun came  up just about opposite our balcony.  The rising sun seems like an appropriate first post for the new year, and so I share it with you.

After the bitterly cold weather we had a few weeks ago, Betsy and I decided we needed a change.  So when we learned that our favorite inn at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, had a special deal on ocean view rooms for December, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit the beach and have some delicious seafood.

Two of our favorite restaurants were closed for the season, but that just gave us an excuse to try some places that we hadn’t visited before.  Is it my imagination or is seafood really so much better-tasting at the seashore?

We arrived at Ocean Isle Beach late Monday afternoon, December 20, to be greeted by this beautiful sight from the balcony of our room.  This alone made the trip worth while, but over the next two days we were to find several other reasons to be thankful that we made the trip.

Betsy and I were on the interstate on our way home from Asheville last month when we saw this beautiful sunset near Knoxville, Tennessee.  We were fortunate to be able to find a spot where we could pull off and get this picture.
