Betsy, in her blog yesterday, told about our day on September 11, 2001.  The beauty of St. Maarten in  the Caribbean was a surreal contrast to the events taking place in the United States.

The picture above was taken as our ship was leaving Philipsburg, our port of call in St. Maarten.   In spite of all the tragedy of the day,  This scene gave us a sense of calm and peace.

“Red sky at night, sailor’s delight”

We may not have many sailors here on the Plateau of Tennessee, but we have many people who can appreciate a beautiful sunset.  I snapped this red sky from the golf course behind our house on this past Sunday evening.

This is just a short note to let you know that I’m taking a break over Labor Day weekend.  I need to labor in the yard and get some other projects done.  Have a great weekend and I’ll see you Tuesday morning.

Skywatch Friday: Carolina Mountains Evening Sky

Betsy and her childhood girlfriends are working on their ‘Girls Only’ annual getaway.  This year they’re talking about renting a cabin in Maggie Valley, North Carolina.

That got me to looking through some of my North Carolina pictures.  I came across the picture above, which was taken near Franklin, North Carolina earlier this year.  It shows clouds over the western North Carolina mountains in the early evening.  The tops of some of the clouds still reflect the setting sun.

Skywatch Friday # 57: Sunset at Ormond Beach

The picture above was taken at sunset on Betsy’s birthday.  We were in Ormond Beach, Florida, and had a room overlooking the Atlantic.

Now I know the sun doesn’t set over the Atlantic from Florida.  The sun was going down behind us on the other side of the building.  But I liked the color of the clouds over the ocean that I couldn’t resist snapping this photo.  And, of course, I had to share it on Skywatch Friday.

On the Road Again

The Arkansas River in a sunrise from Mount Nebo. December 2, 2008.

The Arkansas River in a sunrise from Mount Nebo. December 2, 2008.

I managed to finish a third set of photos and get them published.  This third set is of a sunrise on Mount Nebo in Arkansas taken last December.  This picture shows the Arkansas River in the valley below in the light of early dawn.  You can see other pictures of that sunrise by clicking HERE.

Actually it’s appropriate for me to post a travel picture today because Betsy and I are about to hit the road again.  Betsy’s brother is in a nursing home in Jacksonville, Florida, and we want to go see him.  My beautiful bride likes the beach, so we’re going to spend a couple of days on the beach near Daytona.  We’ll be at the beach on Betsy’s birthday (I’ve been sworn to secrecy on the number), so we’ll have an appropriate celebration.

As a matter of fact, it will be a double celebration.  Betsy shares a birthday with one of her cousins and we will be having dinner with Bonnie and her husband.  We’ll celebrate by getting some fresh seafood.

It should come as no surprise that we’ve planned the trip to include some waterfalls.  We’ll check out a couple of waterfalls in northern Georgia on the way to Florida.  We’ve learned that Florida has one natural waterfall, so we’ve arranged our trip home to include that waterfall.  If we see it Florida will be the first state in which we’ve visited all the waterfalls!!!

So we’re going to be away from home and away from the computers for several days.  We plan to get back home on Saturday, August 8, so hopefully I’ll have a post on Sunday, August 9.

In the meantime, I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

Skywatch # 53: Evening Sky in North Carolina

Last Friday evening we were at Mountain Air, North Carolina, enjoying a delicious meal prepared by my son and his girlfriend.  We were sitting on the deck of the condo when the sky slowly changed color after the sun set.

I couldn’t get around the trees in the foreground, but I did manage to capture the red afterglow.

Watery Wednesday # 31

The picture above was taken from our cruise ship on a September evening as we were leaving Philipsburg, St. Maarten in the Caribbean.  You can see a little of the coast of the island at the extreme right, but mostly you see water and the vastness of the ocean — a perfect scene for Watery Wednesday.

Scenic Sunday # 39

The picture above was taken on Mt. Nebo in Arkansas in December of last year.  It seems appropriate on this Easter morning to post a picture of a sunrise — that moment when the darkness of the world is about to be overcome by the light of heaven.

That’s exactly what is celebrated today — the Son rising; the Light of Heaven overcoming Darkness.

Our church service this morning will begin with these words:

Alleluia!  Christ  is risen.
The Lord is risen indeed.  Alleluia!

Sky Watch # 38

Sky Watch Friday is a weekly meme in which people share pictures of the sky,  Last week over 380 people shared beautiful sky pictures through this meme.  To see more pictures from around the world or to join and post your own pictures, click HERE.

Sunrises and sunsets at sea always seem especially spectacular.  Betsy and I enjoyed the sunrises and sunsets each day on our Caribbean cruise.  This particular sunrise was taken on our day at sea as we returned to San Juan at the end of the cruse.  I can’t account for the green tinge in the sky, but I do know that I like the picture and think it is appropriate for Sky Watch Friday.

'Our' cabin on Mt. Nebo. November 27, 2006.

'Our' cabin on Mt. Nebo. November 27, 2006.

This is my post for the weekly meme Scenic Sunday.  To see more Scenic Sunday pictures, or to join the fun and post your own pictures, click HERE.

The cabin in the photo above is Cabin #60 in Mt. Nebo State Park, Arkansas.  But Betsy and I refer to it as ‘our’ cabin on Mt. Nebo.  We’ve stayed in this cabin four times already and are going back this week for our fifth stay.

Mt. Nebo was a favorite of Betsy’s BG — ‘Before George’ — although she never stayed in Cabin 60.  Betsy took me to Mt. Nebo for the first time in 2006, and that was the first time we stayed in this cabin.

The cabin is just the right size for two.  It has a fireplace in the living room, which makes Betsy very happy.  The cabin is on the edge of the mountain top and has a fantastic view of the valley below.  And we are often visited by deer in the evening.

Betsy and I will be gone for the entire week — hiking, searching for waterfalls, and enjoying the beautiful scenery.  We hope you all have a wonderful week and we’ll see you next Sunday.
