Saint Patrick Rose

One of the newer roses that Betsy and I have in our garden is Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick is a hybrid tea rose that does very well in hot weather, which we’ve had plenty of over the past two years.

When Saint Patrick buds, the yellow buds are tinged with green (some people say chartreuse) — see the photo above, and the hotter the weather the more green there is along the edges.

But as the flower opens the green starts to fade away, and the yellow becomes more pronounced. This picture was taken the day after the one above.

By the third day there is very little green left, and the blossom is a beautiful yellow or gold. The blossoms are quite large and last for quite some time.

Saint Patrick is a rose we very much enjoy, especially during the heat of the summer.

Consider the lilies

I’m not sure day lilies are the biblical lilies of the field, but they certainly are beautiful and worthy of consideration. We have several varieties in our yard, most of them rebloomers that we can enjoy twice a year. Day lilies are way to grow and don’t require much maintenance, which is a nice bonus.

Carolyn Criswell (the photo above) is a bright, beautiful day lily that always looks cheerful.

I dearly love Betsy, but I must admit that I enjoy seeing Lady Lucille whenever she puts in an appearance in our yard.

I seriously doubt that Christmas Wishes would bloom in our yard in December, but it certainly looks festive this time of the year.

Pure and Simple may not be ‘fancy’, but it is definitely pretty. The large blossoms of this day lily are always a welcome sight.

I almost feel that I cheated when I got this picture of our Bright Sunset day lily. I actually took this photo in the morning light. I’m not aware of a ‘Bright Sunrise’ day lily.

We have other beautiful day lilies in our yard, but I hope you enjoyed this sample. It’s been a beautiful Spring in the Glade.

Autumn Iris

Betsy and I are fortunate to be able to enjoy iris at various locations in our yard.  I like iris not only because they are beautiful but also because they require relatively little care (unlike our roses!).

When Betsy and I started getting serious about our yard, we discovered that there were such things as reblooming iris.  Most of the iris we have are rebloomers, so we can enjoy the blossoms twice a year.  It’s rather like doubling our pleasure.

The iris in the header is Cantina.  This beauty has been in our yard for several years, and I always marvel at the color.

Clarence is another iris that we’ve enjoyed over the years.  It is in the flower bed near the road, so we share it with people passing by.

One of our newer iris is Lemon Duet.  This is actually the first time it has bloomed for us in October, but we’re very glad it did.

My Friend Jonathan has been a good friend and has put on a spring and autumn show ever since he joined our yard.

Double Your Fun is a newer iris for us as well.  The drought kept it from developing normally, but the colors are still gorgeous, so I could leave it out.

The Women in My Life

They say confession is good for the soul.  I hope ‘they’ are right, because I feel I really should confess about some of the ladies in my life.  If you go beyond this paragraph, however, you have to promise not to tell Betsy about my confession.

One of the first ladies I see each summer is Janice Brown.  She’s very pretty and perky, as you can tell by the photo above.

I must admit to being partial to blondes, and the bright yellow of Carolyn Criswell is always a delight to see.

I have a great deal of Irish in me, so I suppose it’s natural that I’ve been drawn to Dublin Elaine.  In my mind there aren’t many like her in this world.

Of course it’s hard to think of the Irish without picturing fiery redheads.  Lady Lucille definitely fits that description.

Last, but not least, is Lady Elizabeth.  I suppose I shouldn’t feel too guilty about seeing her; after all Betsy’s first name is Elizabeth.

Spring Has Sprung

In the last few days we’ve had beautiful weather and Spring bulbs have burst into bloom.  We have several varieties of daffodils in our flower beds, and these have all brightened our days this week.

Unfortunately, we’re predicted to have two nights of below-freezing temperatures Friday and Saturday.  We can only hope we have some of these blossoms around on Sunday morning.

Our World: Trimming Damaged Trees

In my last post, I told about the week of storms we had February 17 – 23.  If you missed that post, you can see it HERE.

Once we got our electricity back on, our biggest concern was the broken tree tops dangling from the trees around our house.  Fortunately we were able to get a crew to do the work very efficiently.

One of the men was apparently unafraid of heights (as you can see from the photo above), and scampered up to the breaks and began to cut them free so they could be lowered to the ground.  While he was up there he even admired the view he had of the mountains in the distance.  I was happy he was up the tree, and not me.

He had to climb three trees to clean up all the breaks.  In each case the branches were lowered to the ground where they were cut into smaller pieces so they could be moved more easily.

Finally the smaller pieces were loaded onto their truck and hauled away.  As you can see, they had quite a load when they were finished.  Now it’s up to Betsy and me to get all the remaining small branches and twigs cleaned up.  I don’t think we’ll be bored.

The Week That Was — and Hopefully Will Never Be Again

We had quite a week here in the Glade last week — three storms in a single week is just a bit much.

The ice in the first storm missed us, but we did get snow as you can see in the photo above.

The second storm brought us some ice with ice covered twigs on the trees …

Unfortunately the third storm brought a couple of inches of ice with broken tree tops and branches.  Our neighborhood looked like a war zone, and we were without power for a couple of days.

I hope it’s a long time before we have another week like this.

Our World: Candy in Our Yard

All of these pictures were taken in mid-June, but I wanted to share some of our ‘candy’ with you.  These candies contain absolutely no calories, and so can be enjoyed as often as desired without any weight gain whatsoever.

Custard Candy was the first of our candies.  We now have two different clumps of Custard Candy.  One is on the side of the house where we can enjoy it from the deck.  The other clump is in the flowerbed near the road in front of the house.

Strawberry Candy is also in the bed along the side of the house.

We have a large clump of Elegant Candy along the road.  We both like the color of this day lily.

Wineberry Candy is the last of our candies.  It, too, is along the road in front of our house and puts on quite a display that we, and the people traveling along the road can enjoy.

The nice thing about the day lilies along the road is that they are all rebloomers, and will bloom again in the autumn.  It’s just a good thing these candies aren’t fattening — we enjoy them so much.

We’ve been fortunate to have some beautiful iris blooming in our yard this Spring.  Iris are quite easy to care for, and when they have marvelous blossoms they are doubly delightful.  The iris above is Orange Harvest.  It’s easy to see how this iris got its name.

Floor Show is a very interesting bicolor iris.  We have it in a couple of different places in our yard.

Sometimes the blossom is much prettier than the name.  Hell’s Fire is not exactly a name I would pick, but I do like the color.

We also have Electric Shock is a couple of places in the yard.  It has a very showy blossom that stands out very well.

I was beginning to think that Spring would never make it up on the Cumberland Plateau here in Tennessee. It seemed that every time we had a nice day in March, we would have freezing rain or snow tow days later.

But in spite of the reluctance of Old Man Winter to leave, we finally had some crocus pop up in the yard. The critters seem to think that crocus bulbs make a delicious treat, so we had mostly single flowers or small clumps of blossoms.

But be that as it may, at least they brought some color to the yard and a promise of more blossoms to come.
