My World: Yard Work Keeping Me Busy

March 22, 2011

Spring has come to  the Plateau, and that means that there is more work to be done in the yard.  I finished up one big project — rebuilding our biggest rose bed.  Hopefully the new bed will allow me provide a better growing environment for the roses this year.

Speaking of roses, the weather has been so nice that all of the bushes are showing new growth, so I have been uncovering them.  I should have them all uncovered in the next day or so.  The container roses were growing so much in the garage that I’ve already moved them outside.

Periwinkle Bed, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. March 19, 2011.

Fortunately not everything in the yard has involved hard work this Spring.  The periwinkle that we have growing in the rocky areas where grass won’t grow is putting on a beautiful display.  Later in the year I’ll have to worry about keeping it in its bed, but right now I can simply enjoy.

My World: Crocus Pickwick in bloom

We have good news and bad news on our Spring Watch this week.  The good news is that the crocus are blooming — Spring colors have begun.  The bad news is that they are blooming about two weeks early than they did last year.  I’m not sure Old Man Winter has agreed to stay away for good.

But there’s nothing we can do about that, so we’re just enjoying the crocus as they brighten up our yard.

Colors Other Than White or Brown

March 3, 2011

Yellow Pansies, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. February 24, 2011.

We’re finally beginning to see some colors other than white or brown in the yard.  Although it is only early March, Daffodils and Tulips are pushing up through the soil.  Our roses are beginning to show signs of new growth.

The pansies have emerged from under the snow and have shaken off the effects of freezing temperatures.  The yellow beauties above aren’t perfect examples of pansy blossoms, but they are definitely sunny and cheerful.

Betsy even found a crocus in bloom.  It was small, but there were three blossoms in all.  Looking at them I could almost think I was dreaming, but the picture is real.  We had crocus in bloom in late February.

My World: This is Really the Last of the Roses

November 30, 2010

Memorial Day Rose, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. November 26, 2010.

This is my post for the My World meme.  It is hosted by Klaus, Ivar, Sandy, Wren, and Fishing Guy.  To learn more about our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.

These are the last of them — I promise.  In spite of cold nights in November, these roses held on.  I took these pictures the day after Thanksgiving, and brought the roses into the house the next day.

Memorial Day, the rose in the picture above, is a beautiful, fragrant,  pink rose.  It usually blooms for the first time around Memorial Day, which I assume helped contribute to its name.

Southern Belle Rose, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. November 26, 2010.

Southern Belle is a new yellow rose for us this year.  It is in our new flower bed near the road.

Sedona Rose, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. November 26, 2010.

Sedona is also in that new flower bed.

We still haven’t had a killing frost yet, but I’m confident that these are the last of our roses for this year.

My World: The End of Autumn Color

November 23, 2010

Our front yard, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. November 20, 2010.

The autumn colors are just about gone here on the Plateau.  As the picture above shows, the trees around our house are mostly bare.  Betsy and I worked hard on picking up leaves Friday and Saturday, so the yard looks pretty good right now.  Of course, if the wind blows from the wrong direction, the leaves in the vacant lots will be in our yard.  Oh, well, we’ll just enjoy how good it looks as long as we can.

Watery Wednesday #114: Our Cascade

November 17, 2010

Water flowing down the ditch in front of our front yard wall. Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. November 17, 2010.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

This little cascade doesn’t seem like much, but it was a very welcome sight for us.  We’ve had a very dry summer here on the Plateau, but it finally started to rain Monday.  We never had a real hard downpour, but it did rain fairly steadily through Tuesday afternoon.  When I went out Tuesday morning I saw water coming down this little drainage ditch in front of the wall we built last year.

This was the first time since early Spring that we had water going down ‘our’ cascade.  That’s why the sight is so welcome to us.

My World: Red Maples

November 16, 2010

Leaves of a Red Maple in our front yard, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. November 4, 2010.

We’ve had a couple of days of cool, rainy days, and most of the leaves are off the trees in our yard.  Of course, that means there are a lot of leaves on the ground, but that’s a job for a drier day.

A maple tree in our front yard was among the last trees to hold onto its leaves.  The utility company did a pretty good job of mutilating the tree a couple of years ago, but the surviving branches still held some pretty autumn color.

These pictures were taken about a week ago.

My World: The Second Time Around

November 2, 2010

South Sea Daylily, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. October 2, 2010.

We’re being threatened with freezing temperatures over the weekend, but in the meantime we’re enjoying some of our flowers that are blooming for the second time this year.  We have daylilies and irises that bloom in both Spring and Autumn.

Our South Sea daylily (pictured above) started blooming again in early October.

Hemstitched Iris, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. October 23, 2010.

We currently  have two irises in bloom.  Hemstitched (I have no idea where that name came from) started blooming again about ten days ago.

Floor Show Iris, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. October 27, 2010.

The other blooming iris is Floor Show.  I’m guessing that it got that name because it is quite showy.

Most of our roses are continuing to bloom as well.  You are welcome to stop by and enjoy the flowers in our yard, but it looks as if you need to get here before the weekend.

Signs of Autumn

October 7, 2010

Dogwood berries, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. October 5, 2010.

I’ve been trying to learn more about my camera, and how to use the manual settings rather than using the automatic functions most of the time.  I would like to learn more about photographic techniques, although I’m not sure that it will help me get better pictures.

I did some reading on the relationship between shutter speed and aperture and, since Tuesday was a gorgeous day, went outside to do some experimenting.  I was trying to see if I could find manually settings that would produce a pleasing photo.

I first experimented with trying to capture the berries on the dogwood tree in our front yard.  The results of that experiment is the picture above.

Sumac leaves, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. October 5, 2010.

I then walked down the street to some sumac trees in the vacant lot below our house.  The leaves of the tree were a beautiful red, and the sun was shining directly on them.  Those conditions resulted in this picture.

Our First Re-Bloomer: Janice Brown Daylily

September 2, 2010

Janice Brown Daylily, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. August 31, 2010.

About the time Betsy and I were planning our new front yard flower bed, we learned that re-blooming daylilies were available.  Re-blooming daylilies bloom in the Spring like regular daylilies and then, with luck, re-bloom in the fall.

We already planned on planting re-blooming iris in the new flower bed (along with roses), so we thought re-blooming daylilies would fit right in.  We ordered some and enjoyed many beautiful blossoms this Spring.

Tuesday morning we spotted the beauty above — our first re-blooming daylily.  Janice Brown daylily has a subdued pastel color, but it adds some appreciated color to our yard in the autumn of the year.
