My World: Our Family of Peace Roses

Last week I posted a picture of the rose above, Chicago Peace, on my photo blog.  In that post I mentioned that we also had Peace, which is probably the most popular rose of all time.  I also briefly described the differences between the two roses.

One of my faithful readers, Ginny, asked me to post a picture of Peace, so she could see the differences for herself.

But Chicago Peace isn’t the only descendant of Peace that we have in our yard.  We also have Glowing Peace, which shows the family resemblance.

Love and Peace is another descendant of the original Peace rose in our yard.  It, too, is a yellow-pink bicolor.

Finally we have Pink Peace.  This is the rose that looks least like its ancestors, but is probably the most fragrant of the family.

Betsy and I went to Tullahoma yesterday to see how my parents are getting along at my sister’s house.  My sister has fixed up a semi-private living area for them and they seem to be adjusting well.  Both Mom and Dad were in good spirits yesterday.

My World: Woodpecker Buffet

The dead tree in the photo above is in the vacant lot below our house here in the Glade.  We’ve noticed the holes in the tree for a couple of years, but now the holes that were there seem larger and there seem to be more of them.

I’ve decided that this dead tree is really a woodpecker buffet.  Woodpeckers come and get what they want to eat — the different holes simply represent the locations of different insects.  The size of the hole gives an indication of how popular that particular dish actually is.

Betsy is skeptical about my theory, but it makes perfect sense to me.  There’s only one problem.  If the woodpeckers don’t curb their appetites soon, the whole buffet is going to come crashing down.

My World: A Beach Walk

When Betsy and I arrived at Ocean Isle Beach in December, we were treated to a wonderful sunset which we enjoyed from the balcony of our room.  As the glow started to fade from the sky, I noticed a solitary figure walking along the beach.  I snapped this picture and couldn’t help thinking that I was watching a person alone with his thoughts in a beautiful, majestic world.

My World: Calabash, North Carolina

The town of Calabash, North Carolina, is primarily a fishing village which bills itself as “The Seafood Capital of the World”.  Shrimp boats dock daily during the season, and boats for charters and deep sea fishing also dock there.

The town is famous for its ‘Calabash Seafood’.  This type of flavoring originated in Calabash and is said to be unique.  I used to live in Little River, South Carolina, which is about five miles from Calabash.  When I lived there, I had many fabulous meals in Calabash.  Betsy and I usually have several meals in Calabash when we visit the beach in the Spring.

When we were at the beach in December (a first for us) two of our favorite restaurants were closed for the season.  But the restaurant above, The Boundary House Restaurant, was open.  The Boundary House is a relatively new restaurant named after an inn that straddled the North Carolina – South Carolina state line prior to the Civil War.

The Boundary House is associated with a gift shop, Callahan’s of Calabash.  One part of Callahan’s is dedicated to Christmas decorations.  I captured this photo of St. Nick’s Nacks under a full moon after our meal at the Boundary House.

Calabash was certainly much quieter than it is during the tourist season, but it is still a wonderful place to visit — especially if you like seafood.

My World: Betsy Is Delighted

The picture above shows why Betsy is very happy today.  We got about four inches of snow early Monday, and Betsy is just delighted.  Of course, she doesn’t have to clear the driveway, but I digress.

The storm had been predicted for several days, but Betsy was skeptical that we would get any snow at all.  However, when we woke up Monday morning, this was what we saw in the front yard.

They say we will have snow and/or freezing rain for the next couple of days.  Someone in the family is looking forward to the possibility of snow.  Personally, I’m looking forward to Spring.

My World: A Foggy Morning at the Beach

We woke up on our second morning at Ocean Isle Beach to a very foggy scene.  When we went out to the balcony of our room it was difficult to tell where the sky ended and the ocean began.  But we could still see the pier, which was a little way down the beach from the inn where we were staying.

I usually think of bright sunny skies when I think of the beach, but there still is a certain beauty to a deserted beach on a dreary, foggy morning.

My World: We Had a White Christmas

White Christmases are rare here in Tennessee, but this is what our deck and back yard looked like on Christmas Day.  We actually got much more snow Christmas Night and Sunday morning, but we were glad to see white on the ground Christmas Day.

We were cozy and warm in the house, with a fire in the fireplace to take out the chill.  Of course, those goodies under the tree helped us feel good as well.

My World: Decked Out for Christmas

Our house is now decked out for Christmas.  Not only on the inside but on the outside.  As night falls the lights come on.  The picture above is taken from the road in front of the house just after the sun went down.

Betsy is the designer of our decorations.  My job is to carry things and put them where she tells me to, and to reach the high places she can’t reach.  She’s added the wreaths in the front over the past three years.

Our house opens to the back, where we have three sliding glass doors opening to a large deck.  Betsy has decorated the deck with lighted garlands (you can see some of them in the picture above).  We put the tree in front of one of the doors and keep the curtains open so that  the tree can be seen from the back yard.

Pictures don’t do justice to the way the house looks.  You’ll just have to stop by to see how it looks in person.

My World: Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Winter has come to the Cumberland Plateau.  It’s cold and it snowed most of Sunday.  It was light flurries most of the day, but the driveway became snow-covered after dark.  I don’t want to mention any names, but one member of the family was very happy that day.

Since it’s turned cold, the roses in containers have been moved to the garage where they will hopefully survive the winter.  The roses in the beds have been pruned back and covered, so they, too, are ready for their winter nap.

The yard looks somewhat drab now — at least when it’s not covered by snow.  But that doesn’t mean that everything is drab.  Our Great Room looks bright and colorful now that the Christmas tree is up.  And with a fire in the fireplace it feels as warm as it looks.

My World: This is Really the Last of the Roses

These are the last of them — I promise.  In spite of cold nights in November, these roses held on.  I took these pictures the day after Thanksgiving, and brought the roses into the house the next day.

Memorial Day, the rose in the picture above, is a beautiful, fragrant,  pink rose.  It usually blooms for the first time around Memorial Day, which I assume helped contribute to its name.

Southern Belle is a new yellow rose for us this year.  It is in our new flower bed near the road.

Sedona is also in that new flower bed.

We still haven’t had a killing frost yet, but I’m confident that these are the last of our roses for this year.
