The picture above was taken in 2001 on the island of St. Lucia.  Betsy and I were on our honeymoon cruise and had gone ashore to tour a plantation near the town of Soufriere.  The mountain is Gran Piton, one of two mountains that mark the entrance to the harbor.  You can see a stretch of a tropical beach in the lower right of the picture.

We spent Betsy’s birthday (August 5) at Ormond Beach, Florida.  Betsy likes the beach almost as much as she likes the mountains, so since we were going to Florida to see her brother Ray, we decided to celebrate her birthday at the beach.

The photo above was taken from our room looking north along the beach.  We thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful beach, which was very clean and had surprisingly few people on the beach.

After enjoying the view from our room, we went down to the beach to get some sun and to get wet in the Atlantic.  Here you can see Betsy getting ready for her time in the sun.

This final picture was taken on the beach looking south toward Daytona Beach.  I’ll have to admit that I really enjoyed Betsy’s birthday at this scenic spot.  I hope Betsy enjoyed it as well.

Scenic Sunday # 54: Newfound Gap

As I mentioned the other day, Betsy and I visited with friends at Cades Cove in the Smokies on Thursday.  That visit got me looking at other pictures we’ve taken in the park, and I decided to share these pictures with you.

The picture above was taken in 2001 at Newfound Gap.  As southerners know, a gap is a low point in a mountain ridge.  New Englanders call such places “notches” while westerners refer to them as mountain “passes.”  At an elevation of 5,046 feet Newfound Gap is the lowest drivable pass through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The old road over the Smoky Mountains crossed at Indian Gap, located about 1.5 miles west of the current site.  In 1872 a Swiss geographer, Arnold Henry Guyot, discovered Newfound Gap was lower than Indian Gap.  When the lower, easier crossing was discovered, it became known as the “newfound” gap.  A new road followed, and it became the forerunner of Newfound Gap Road, which can be seen in the distance in the picture above.

But as scenic as the picture above may be, the following picture is even more scenic.  That’s because it shows my beautiful bride at that same location on the same day.

The picture above was taken at the Dillard House, in Dillard, Georgia.  I’ve mentioned the fabulous meal we had there, but the scenery is almost as good as the view.  After our meal we walked around the inn enjoying the view in the evening light.  The Dillard House is located in the Little Tennessee Valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The picture above, taken in front of the restaurant, looks across the valley to the mountains in the distance.

I consider the photo above to be both scenic and appropriate for today.  That is the flag that flies from our flagpole here in the Glade.  The picture above was taken last January as you can tell from the trees.  I didn’t get a picture yesterday to use with this post.

One of the first things Dad did after he got us moved into the house he was building was put up a flagpole in the front yard.  My younger brother, Ken, and I had the job of putting up the flag each morning when the weather was good and taking it down and folding it in the evening.

Mom and Dad continued to fly their flag daily until they both lost their sight.  Ken still flies a flag at his house as do Betsy and I.  Our flag gets weathered over the year and so we have the tradition of flying a new flag each Flag Day.  There are now leaves on the trees around our house and the sky is not quite as blue as it is in this picture, but that new ‘Old Glory’ still looks pretty against the sky.

I know it’s old-fashioned, but I still thrill to see that flag unfurling in the breeze.

I lived in Black Mountain, North Carolina, from 1972 – 1985 and learned to love the mountains of western North Carolina.  So when our friends Judy and Charlie invited us to join them for a few days at their cabin near Otto, North Carolina, it didn’t take us long to take them up on their offer!

The picture above is the view from their deck, looking west in the not-so-early morning.  But the mountains and the Carolina Blue sky make it a scene to enjoy over and over again.

We got home from North Carolina last night.  We had a very relaxing couple of days with our friends Judy and Charlie.  They have a very beautiful cabin in the mountains south of Franklin.  The picture above is a view of the mountains from their deck.

The picture above was taken at an overlook on Newfound Gap Road in the Smokies.  Newfound Gap Road (US 441) is one of the most popular drives in the Smokies and runs between Cherokee, North Carolina and Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  There are several overlooks along the road, this is an unnamed overlook on the Gatlinburg side of the mountains.

The most popular Smokies views along Newfound Gap Road are autumn scenes and sunrise/sunset views.  This picture features neither, but still gives an indication of the beauty of “America’s Most Popular Park”.

The picture above was taken in the DuPont State Forest near Brevard, North Carolina.  Betsy and I had been there in 2006 and had seen three of the four major waterfalls.  But we didn’t get to the fourth waterfall, Bridal Veil, because the hike was just too long for us to make in the time we had available.

When we were planning our trip to the beach this year I was checking waterfall web pages to find waterfalls we could visit either going to or coming home from the beach and I happened to access the web site of the Friends of DuPont Forest.  They were offering a shuttle bus tour of three of the waterfalls, including Bridal Veil, on the weekend we were returning from the beach.  It was too good of an opportunity to see another waterfall, so we our plans accordingly.

The picture above shows the lower part of Bridal Veil Falls, which gets its name from the way the water spreads out over the rocks.

On the day we were there it was possible to walk up some of the dry rocks to the upper free fall.  The upper falls is the location used in the movie “Last of the Mohicans” when the main characters walked behind the waterfall to hide from the Indians.  Since I didn’t have my hiking boots with me I didn’t try to go behind the upper falls, but I did get close enough to take the picture below.
