Last week Betsy and I went to the Smokies to do some hiking and get some pictures.  Unfortunately we didn’t get in much hiking, but we did get in a lot of photography.  We drove and walked along Middle Prong of Pigeon River, since I wanted to try out my new lens and filter.

But in addition to trying out my new equipment, I couldn’t resist getting some pictures of Betsy at work.  She didn’t have a new camera or lens, but she worked hard at getting good pictures herself.  The picture above shows her getting a picture of some rapids in the river.

There were a couple of small waterfalls on the side of the road across from the river.  Here Betsy is getting a picture of Stillhouse Hollow Falls.

I was lucky to get one or two pictures of Betsy without that camera in her face.  Just look at that smile.

In late July Betsy and I took a day off from working in the yard and drove down to Tellico Plains and the Tellico River.  We drove along the  river until we came to Bald River Falls, where we hiked along Bald River above the falls.

When I experiment with trying to capture the motion of water in my photos, I usually take several shots at the same place with different exposures.  I often don’t know for sure what I get until I look at the pictures on my computer once I get home.

I took the photo above with a 5 second exposure, and the one below with an 8 second exposure.  While there is not much difference in the cascade itself, I was struck by the difference in the ripples below the large boulder on the right.

Betsy Was a Happy Camper

My Beautiful Bride can be impatient at times, and she has been waiting for snow ever since Thanksgiving.  But she wasn’t waiting for just any snow — it had to be a perfect snowstorm:  The snowflakes had to be big and fluffy, they had to fall during daylight, and the snow had to cling to trees and branches.

I’m happy to say that Betsy was a happy camper on Tuesday.  It started  snowing in the morning and snowed off and on during most of the day.  It didn’t take long for the deck and the golf course to have a cover of white.

In late October we met our blog friends Patti and Neal for a couple of days of hiking and sightseeing around Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.  Neal grew up in the area, and on our second day he took us to some of his old stomping grounds.  Along the way he told us that he knew of a little waterfall that we might like to see.  He didn’t know the name, but he thought it was pretty.

Neal was right — it was a pretty little waterfall.  A little research showed that the waterfall was on Burrell Creek.  Betsy and I were happy to add it to our collection.

As most of you know, Betsy loves snow and never gets enough of it.  (She obviously never had to trudge through a foot of the stuff in early morning darkness to milk the cows!).  Well, she finally got some snow last week.

We didn’t get a lot of snow — maybe a couple of inches — but it did look pretty on the fairway behind our house.

While putting up the bird feeders one Monday evening in December, Betsy and I noticed the nearly-full moon rising through the trees.  I grabbed my camera and walked out onto the golf course to get a view without the trees blocking the view.

Yesterday was the last of the twelve days of Christmas, but today is the Day of Epiphany, commemorating the visit of the Wise Men to the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem.  So I think one more Christmas-themed  post is appropriate.

On December 19 Betsy and I visited the Opryland Hotel in Nashville with my daughter Kelly and her husband Chuck.  One of the attractions at the hotel this time of year is a Nativity Scene with life-sized figurines.

When we first saw this display many years ago, it was set up in a courtyard between two wings of the hotel.  Now it’s set up in front of the hotel.  While that gave more room for a large stable and manger, it definitely tied up traffic.  Fortunately there were officers to direct traffic.

If you’re ever in Nashville during the holiday season, I think you’ll enjoy seeing the Opryland Hotel, especially at night.

There are many other beautiful decorations at the hotel, but I’ll probably save those for another holiday season.

I’ve read about the golden hour in photography.  The golden hour is the first and last hour of sunlight each day.  When we were with our friends Patti and Neal at the end of October, we spent much of one day enjoying the autumn colors and hiking in Kentucky.  Late in the day we drove through Betsy’s home town in Big Stone Gap, Virginia before heading back to the lodge in Kentucky.

The day had been dreary and overcast, but as the sun was going down, we saw a bright orange-pink sky in the west below the clouds.  Since Patti and Neal are as much into photography as Betsy and me, we of course had to stop for pictures.

Looking back to the east, the glow on the hills and the buildings were a perfect example of what the golden hour means.

But as beautiful as that was, our eyes kept going back to the bright light between the mountains and the clouds to the west.  What a gorgeous ending to a wonderful day.

My son Robert and his family planned to come to Tennessee for Thanksgiving, but when their plans changed Betsy and I travelled down to Florida to have Thanksgiving with them.  One advantage of making the trip was that Robert agreed to make some of his fried turkey for us, a treat that neither Betsy nor I had had before.

The process started with Robert injecting some Cajun marinade into two turkey breasts and a whole turkey (he must have thought we were hungry!).

The turkey breasts then went into the fryer with the help of a friend.  While these two played around fixing dinner, I worked hard as the official photographer.

Dad

My Dad, John Emery Adams, Jr., passed away on December 5, 2013.  He was 101 years old.

It’s hard to know how to summarize a life, especially a life that encompassed so much.  Dad was born in Texas, grew up in Arkansas, lived in Indiana for many years before moving to Tennessee.  He remembered going to church with his family in a horse-drawn wagon, as well as the first house his family lived in which had electricity.

Dad met Mom when he was in the CCC in southern Indiana.  The picture above was one he had made for Mom as a Christmas present in 1938.  However, they had to wait until 1940 to get married, since Mom’s parents said she couldn’t get married until she was 20 years old.  They got married three days after her birthday.  There wedding was simple — they asked the congregation of Mom’s church to stay after Sunday service and attend the wedding.  They left right afterwards for their new home in northern Indiana, and shared a carton of milk as their first meal as husband and wife.

One of the most remarkable things about Mom and Dad is that you rarely saw one without the other.  This picture was taken on their 61st wedding anniversary in 2001.  Mom is wearing her wedding dress.

I remember that Dad had a love of gadgets and was always trying to figure out (usually successfully) how things worked.  This picture, taken about 1960, shows him with his new movie camera.  He got a computer at the age of 90 and exchanged daily emails with us until he lost his sight and had to give it up.

I always thought Dad could do anything.  He built most of the house in which I grew up, as well as the farm buildings we had.  If something broke, he usually managed to fix it.  He taught himself to repair small appliances so he would have something to do after he retired.  He repaired appliances until Mom made him quit when he was 80 years old.  We still meet people in Hendersonville, Tennessee, who talk about what a wonderful job he did as a repair man.

Although Dad was still climbing up on the roof of his home to clean the gutters well into his 90s, he did decide that pushing a lawn mower over their large yard was a bit much, so he got a riding mower.

Mom died in 2011, so she wasn’t there to celebrate Dad’s 100th birthday in 2012.  We had a party for him at his church in Hendersonville, and many family and friends came to help him celebrate.  This picture of Dad was taken at that party.

We had a celebration of Dad’s life yesterday (Monday).  I’m going to miss him.
