Our World: Where the Buffalo Roam

After visiting Mount Rushmore, Betsy and I drove to South Dakota’s Custer State Park.  One area of the park that was highly recommended was the Wildlife Loop, where we were assured that we would see plenty of wildlife.

Our friends were correct — we saw a wide variety of wildlife:  big horn sheep, burros, pronghorns and bison.  I’ve seen bison before, but never so many at one time.

Bison on the prairie in Custer State Park, South Dakota. September 25, 2012.

Seeing them on the prairie reminded me of descriptions of the huge buffalo herds encountered during the westward expansion of the United States.  At one time there were millions of bison in North America, but by 1900 it is estimated that fewer than 1,00 bison remained on the entire continent.

There are now as many as 1,300 head of bison in Custer State Park.  Bison can grow to 6 feet tall and weigh more than 2,000 pounds.  They are the largest native terrestrial mammal of North America.

The park holds a roundup each year to adjust the size of the herd according to the predicted availability of grassland forage.    The spring birthing season           rejuvenates the herd to approximately 1,300 head each year.

Tennessee Skies

The Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee is the highest wooded plateau in the U. S.  On a beautiful summer day we’re high enough that it seems as if we could reach up and touch the white clouds sailing in that blue sky.

Air Force Chapel

The chapel at the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado. September 15, 2012.

On our second day in Colorado Springs, Betsy and I drove out to the Air Force Academy.  Both of us had seen pictures of the chapel many times, and we wanted to visit it in person.  As we walked toward the chapel (above) it was every bit as impressive as we had been led to believe.

But I thought the interior was even more impressive than the exterior.  The light and color inside the sanctuary was marvelous.  We walked around  sanctuary marveling at the beauty.  The colored squares let in a wonderful  streams of light.

The organ in the loft was also magnificent.

The overall effect of the color and light is to cause a person to look up.  That seems to be very appropriate for an Air Force chapel.

Our World: On the Road Again

October 1, 2012

The route of our trip out west in September.

As you’ve probably imagined, Betsy and I were on the road over the past couple of weeks.  We had a fabulous trip out west, and I want to share an overview of our 5,455 mile adventure.  The image above shows our trip on Google Earth.

We reached this Welcome Center in Colorado on September 13, 2012.

Our first major destination was Colorado Springs, where we visited Pikes Peak, the Garden of the Gods, and the Royal Gorge.  We also met with blog friends Sally and Jim.

Betsy at the Continental Divide at Milner Pass, Rocky Mountains National Park. September 17, 2012.

We then went on to the Rocky Mountain National Park, where we were able to drive the Old Fall River Road which had been closed by snow when we visited last year.  We also visited areas of the park that we didn’t get to last time.

Beehive Geyser, Yellowstone National Park. September 21, 2012.

Then it was off to Yellowstone.  We got to visit many sections of the park, and would be hard pressed to name a favorite area.  But in spite of all that we saw, we left many things unseen so we would have a good excuse to go back.  We also met blog friends Linda and Doug while at Yellowstone.

Betsy at Mount Rushmore. September 25, 2012.

We started home by way of Rapid City, South Dakota, where we visited Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park.

It was a marvelous trip, and I’m sure I’ll have much more to share in the days ahead as I work through some of the 2,000 pictures I took!

SkyWatch Friday: Blue Moon Over the Glade

Did you see the full moon last Friday night?  It was the second full moon of the month, so it qualified as a blue moon.

I was beginning to think I would miss it, because the sky was very cloudy as the moon was coming up.

But sometimes patience has its rewards.  As the moon got higher, the clouds started to disperse.

The breaks in the clouds kept getting larger, and I could see more and more of the moon.

I was finally able to get a fairly decent picture of the blue moon.  We won’t have another one until 2015.

This has been a very hectic time for us with upcoming weddings, Dad’s birthday, and work on the house.  Betsy and I need a break to recharge our batteries, so, as some of you have done, we’re taking a blogging break.  We will be away from blogging until October 1.  I hope all of you have a very happy and wonderful September.

Betsy in the Smokies

September 5, 2012

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

In late August we had some early morning appointments in Knoxville, so we decided to make a day of it by visiting the Smokies after finishing up in Knoxville.  We drove along Middle Prong past Tremont, and although the water level was low, we found plenty of reasons to stop and enjoy the scenery.  Later in the day we drove around Cades Cove, one of our favorite  parts of the park.

This collage is made up of photos I took of Betsy during our day in the Smokies.

On our last morning in Arkansas Betsy and I got up before dawn to watch the sun rise from Gaither Mountain near Harrison, Arkansas.  We had traveled over the mountain the previous day and we knew the view was spectacular.

What we didn’t know is that we would be delayed by a road construction project that started before dawn.  So the sky was already showing color by the time we got to the overlook (see photo above).

It took a while, but after a while the sun started to put in an appearance.

Later we were able to enjoy the sun in all of its golden glory.  What a marvelous way to begin a day.

Happy Birthday, Dad

August 29, 2012

John Emery Adams, Jr. Christmas, 1938.

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

Today is a very special day — my Dad is celebrating his 100th birthday.  The picture above, which he had taken for my mother when they were dating, is the earliest picture I could find.

It’s hard to imagine the changes he’s seen over the past century.  Dad was born in Texas, but his family moved to Arkansas when he was still a boy.  He remembers going to church in a horse-drawn wagon.  He was still a young teenager when he first encountered electricity.  His mother fussed at him because he kept turning a light off and on trying to figure out where the light came from.

Mom, Dad and me in 1942.

Dad met Mom in 1937 when he was in the CCC, but they had to wait until Mom was 20 in 1940 before they could get married.  They had their first child in 1942 (it’s been a long time since I had that much hair!).

Dad was always interested in gadgets.  This snapshot, taken about 1960, shows him with his 8mm movie camera at my aunt and uncle’s house.

This picture shows Dad dancing with Betsy at my cousin’s wedding in 2001.  They were obviously a big hit on the dance floor.

Mom and Dad at Barren River State Park, Kentucky. August 29, 2004.

I took this picture of Mom and Dad in 2004 as we celebrated Dad’s 92nd birthday.  Mom died in June, 2011, shortly after their 71st wedding anniversary.

Dad and his new tractor in 2006.

Dad’s love of gadgets and learning things remained strong through the years.  He taught himself to use a computer when he was 90.  By the time he was 94 he decided he was too old to mow the lawn with his walking mower, so he got this riding tractor so he could continue mowing his own lawn.

We celebrated Dad’s birthday a few days early with a reception at his church in Hendersonville, Tennessee.  Quite a few friends from the church — as well as family members — came to see Dad and wish him a happy birthday.  In the picture above Dad is talking with a church member he hadn’t seen in over a year.  The woman on the right is his niece, who came down from Indiana with her family to see Dad.

Our World: Ozark Mountains

When Betsy and I went to Arkansas earlier this month, we were shocked at the drought conditions in the state.  As we traveled from Memphis to Little Rock we saw many brown fields and lawns.  Even when we traveled north to Fairfield Bay, it was obvious that the state was very dry.

We left Fairfield Bay and headed toward Mountain View, Arkansas, along Highway 9.  We passed over many dry creeks, but then we rounded a bend and saw the scene above.

Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. August 5, 2012.

It was so beautiful  with the mountains, sky, clouds and green trees, that we both said “Stop!”.  So we pulled over to the side of the road and got these pictures of this part of the Ozark Mountains.  The Ozarks of Arkansas were definitely beautiful in spite of the drought.

My Beautiful Bride likes crescent moons, so when she saw one early Wednesday (August 22) evening she said I should get a picture.  It never takes much to encourage me to get out my camera, so I went out and captured this photo.
