We’ve had a mild winter so far this year, and I’m not complaining,  But I will admit that snow — and even ice — can be beautiful as long as I don’t have to drive in it.  I took this picture in our yard a couple of years ago, and thing the icy branches look good against the blue sky.

I was going through some of my archived photos when I came across this picture of the moon taken back in June, 2010.  Looking more closely at the photo, I noticed craters and ridges on the lower left side of the moon.  This may be the best picture of the moon I have taken that shows these features.  I’m posting a photo that is large and can be enlarged twice.  That’s the best way to see the craters and ridges.  I hope you find the photo as interesting as I do.

There are many of advantages to living on the Plateau, one of which is the beautiful sunsets we often see, especially in winter.  This picture was taken on the Druid Hills Golf Course in January, 2009.

Winter is not my favorite season of the year (just ask Betsy), but I will admit that at times it can be quite beautiful.  This picture was taken back in 2010, the day after an ice storm here on the Plateau.  The sky was an unbelievable blue that beautifully set off the ice-covered branches of a tree in our front yard.

Betsy and I were treated to this wonderful sunset on the afternoon we got back from our Thanksgiving trip.  We stopped by the 12th tee of the Druid Hills golf course to enjoy the view and to get these photos.

Sunsets are often spectacular here on the Plateau, and this time of year the sun lines up very well the fairway on that hole.

On this day the color of the sky was gorgeous, even after the sun dropped below the horizon.

Betsy Was Delighted

If you know anything at all about Betsy, you know how much she loves snow.  It snowed here in the Glade yesterday, and Betsy was in a very happy mood.  She didn’t go out and build a snowman (we didn’t get that much snow), but she did get out to enjoy it.

We had a wet snow that clung to just about everything.  It was what Betsy calls a perfect snow.

Trees in our yard, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. December 7, 2011.

It came down pretty heavy for a while and coated  the bare branches of the trees in our yard in a layer of white.

We still have a few more days before Christmas, and we may not have a white Christmas, but the berries on the holly in front of our house looked very festive under all the snow.

I will admit that it was a pretty snow, and I’m glad Betsy’s happy.  Now that she’s had her snow, I’m ready for Spring.

Our World: November Roses

Peace Rose in our yard. November 13, 2011.

We got to mid-November without a killing frost, so our roses continued to bloom.  Most of the leaves are off the trees, so it’s nice to still have some color in the yard.

The rose above is Peace, which since it’s introduction in 1945, has become the most  widely-planted rose in the world.  Sam McGredy, a famous rose hybridizer, said of the Peace rose “It’s as nearly perfect as a rose can be”.  I’m not sure about that, but we sure do like it.

Love and Peace, a descendant of Peace, is another rose that put on a November show for us.

Last Saturday Betsy and I were out enjoying the autumn colors at Lake Canterbury here in the Glade when Betsy pointed out the moon in the blue afternoon sky.  I managed to get this picture of the moon above some of the red leaves of a tree near the lake.

By the time we got home and I got my tripod out the sky was black, but I still managed to get this picture of the moon over Fairfield Glade.

Scenic Sunday: Lake Canterbury

Betsy and I took a ride this past Saturday afternoon to see what autumn color we could find here in the Glade.  The colors are past their peak, but we did find some trees with pretty rust-colored leaves.

The tree above is near a small pubic dock on Lake Canterbury here in the Glade.  We usually pass this lake when going to or from town.

There are some nice waterfront homes along that lake, but the reflections are more beautiful as far as we’re concerned.

The late afternoon sun made created a perfect autumn scene.

Autumn on the Plateau can be a beautiful season with trees in their autumn glory, blue skies, and white clouds.  Things got interesting around our house this week, but I did get out last weekend and captured a few pictures showing our autumn skies.

The picture above was taken on the road in front of our house.  Although there are still leaves on the trees, more and more bare branches can be seen.

The view at the Fourteenth Hole of the Druid Hills Golf Course, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. October 29, 2011.

A little later we drove to an overlook on the fourteenth hole of the Druid Hills Golf Course.  There were plenty of rust-colored trees to be seen.  Could there possibly be a prettier place to live?
