National Rose Month

I found out yesterday (Wednesday) that June is National Rose Month.  So I decided I would mark the occasion by sharing this picture of our front yard.  I have to admit that this picture was taken last week when it was still May, but you can see our three rose beds as well as the containers along the driveway that contain roses.  You can’t see all of them, but we have 55 varieties of roses.  Betsy says that taking care of those roses helps keep me out of trouble.

Speaking of Betsy, please keep her in your thoughts and prayers again today.  She will be having orthoscopic surgery on her knee this afternoon.  Her doctor thinks that a frayed Medial Miniscus in her knee is causing her problems and this surgery should fix everything.  We certainly hope the doctor is right.

My World: Roses for my Beautiful Bride

If you’ve read Betsy’s blog you know that we have 55 varieties of roses in our yard.  They keep us busy, but we have enough roses that I can bring in a rose for my Beautiful Bride just about every day.

The rose above is one of our new roses this year.  The picture really doesn’t do it justice, but the Ronald Reagan rose is a beautiful bicolor.  This is the rose I brought into the house for Betsy yesterday.

Speaking of my Beautiful Bride, Betsy is still in a lot of pain whenever she is on her feet for more than a couple of minutes.  Hopefully she will be able to see the doctor later today and get some answers.  In the meantime I can’t begin to tell you how much we both appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

My World: I Promised Her a Rose Garden

Well, I didn’t promise a rose garden as much as a new flower bed.  This is the flower bed we built last year to keep me from having to mow the steep banks of the ditch in front of our house.  We built the wall and filled in behind it to make a new flower bed.

The irises in the bed have already bloomed, although they should all bloom again in the autumn.  The roses (7) are now blooming and the lilies have started to open.  In a couple of weeks we should have daylilies blooming there as well.

All in all, it’s not bad outcome for something to help solve a mowing problem.

A New Rose

Since we built a new flower bed last autumn, we have some new roses in our yard this spring.  The first of the new roses to bloom is this sunny yellow grandiflora, Southern Belle.

Yellow roses are said to symbolize friendship and caring.  Since my Beautiful Bride and my Best Friend is also a Southern Belle, I thought it was entirely appropriate to add this rose to our garden.

My World Is Coming Up Roses

Our world is coming up roses.  Most of the roses in our yard are now in bloom.  The picture above is of our biggest rose bed.  Some of the roses were in bloom when we got back from the beach, but they are now really putting on a show.  I’m sure I’ll have more pictures in the days ahead.

When Betsy and I got home from the beach this past weekend, we found many of our iris in bloom.  We have several different varieties, but the iris pictured above is Betsy’s special iris.  As you probably know, Betsy is a die-hard fan of the University of Tennessee.  She does a pretty good job of keeping her emotions under control, except during football season.   During football season she bleeds orange.  So when I saw that there was an iris called Tennessee Vol, I knew I just had to get it for her.

If You Don’t Like Our Weather, Wait

The picture above was taken a couple of weeks ago.  Almost all of our tulips are now gone, but the iris have started to bloom, so we still have color in our yard.

It’s a fairly common saying that if you don’t like the weather here in Tennessee, stick around for a few minutes — it will change.

We’ve enjoyed some beautiful weather this month.   As a matter of fact we had summer-like temperatures several days ago.  So Betsy and I were shocked when we noticed a freeze watch for our area Tuesday afternoon.  Tuesday was a chilly, rainy day, but it didn’t seem all that cold.  And then we got a text message from our friends Judy and Charlie who were hiking to the lodge atop Mount LeConte in the Smokies just east of here.  They were on the trail, but said it was snowing!

Betsy and I debated covering some of the roses and other flowers, but we knew we couldn’t begin to cover everything.  So we crossed our fingers and decided to hope the weather man was wrong.

Evidently the clouds stuck around longer than expected, because our temperatures stayed in the 40s over night.  Everything in the yard looked fine when we got up Wednesday morning.

And Judy and Charlie?  They woke up Wednesday morning to 8-10 inches of snow on the mountain.  Tennessee is never dull!

My World: Tiptoeing Through the Tulips

Well, we didn’t tip-toe through the tulips, but rather alongside them.  We’ve had some beautiful tulips this spring, many of them in a flower bed that Betsy and I built along the side of the house.  We also had a few tulips in the front of the house.

The weekend cold front has passed through without any frost in our area, for which we are grateful.  So I was able to return to regular Spring chores in the yard.  The cooler weather didn’t slow down the grass, so I got to mow the grass in addition to the other chores in the yard.

It’s a good thing exercise is healthy because all of the beauty of Spring also means there is always something that needs to be done in the yard.

April Is An Interesting Month

April is an interesting month, although not always in a good way.  You know how April showers bring May flowers?  Well, we’ve had practically no rain at all this month.  I’m still hoping for May flowers,  however.

We had summer-like temperatures for most of last week.  We didn’t use the air-conditioner, but we did have the house open and fans running.  So you can imagine our shock and surprise when we got home from running some errands on Saturday afternoon to discover that a frost advisory had been issued for the Plateau.  We moved our container roses into the garage just to be on the safe side.  Fortunately we didn’t have any frost and so we moved them back out yesterday.

Don’t get me wrong — I’m not complaining.  We’ve had beautiful weather and beautiful flowers.  Our pink dogwood tree (above) is about as pretty as it has been since we moved here.

I am finding, however, that I must be slowing down with old age as it seems to take me longer and longer to do everything that needs to be done outside.  So If these postings become a little more sporadic than they’ve been in the past, rest assured that it is because the weather has been good and I have been working outside.  I haven’t forgotten about you and will endeavor to keep up as best as I can.
