November Rose

Apricot Nectar Rose, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. November 4, 2009.

Betsy and I spent most of the afternoon trying to get some of the leaves out of our yard.  I like our house in the woods most of the time, but there are disadvantages in the autumn since all of the trees around the house lose their leaves.  Why couldn’t we have found a house surrounded by pine trees?

Actually, I shouldn’t complain.  The back of our house is on the the rough of the golf course and the golf course maintenance crews remove the leaves from the rough.  They will also remove any leaves we get from our back yard onto golf course property.  So we busily raked and blew leaves from our yard to the rough.  Since the houses above us have already done this, I’m sure the maintenance crews will be delighted when they get to this part of the course!

Even though it’s November, we still have roses in bloom.  I brought in two blossoms for Betsy Wednesday and there are a few more out in the yard.  I didn’t bring in Apricot Nectar, the rose in the picture above, although I may do so today.  I’m surprised that we haven’t had a frost yet.  The valleys on both sides of us have had frost, but so far we’ve been lucky.  I’m not sure how much longer that will last.

My World: Ready for Winter

I finally finished stacking the wood that came while Betsy was in Maggie Valley.  The picture above shows our wood pile.  The wood on the right is what I’ve stacked this year.  We’ll burn that wood next year.  The pile on the left has been aging for a year and that is what we will burn this winter.  If you look at the foreground of the picture you will see lots of leaves.  Guess what we’ll be doing this week?

Full moon in the eastern sky. November 2, 2009.

Now that we’re back on standard time it gets dark early.  Monday we were coming home from Cookeville and had to stop at a grocery store to pick up a few things.  When we came out of the store we saw this full moon in the eastern sky.

No Trick — This is Definitely a Treat

One nice thing about living in Tennessee is that the growing season lasts longer than it does in Ohio.  Even though it is the end of October we still have roses in bloom at the house.

I took the picture of this beauty, Pink Promise, yesterday (Friday).  We have buds and blossoms on several other roses as well.  I hope we can enjoy them  before we get our first frost.

More Autumn Color

Autumn color in the Glade. October 29, 2009.

Yesterday (Wednesday) was a busy day for us.  We made our weekly trip to town to do the grocery shopping and to help rescue the economy.  It was cloudy while we were in town.

On the way back home we noticed blue sky peeking between the clouds.  By afternoon, when I was out stacking wood, the sky was clear.  I noticed the sunlight on the trees behind our house and had to go get my camera.

At this rate it may take longer than planned to get that wood stacked!

How Brave Am I?

Our side yard, Fairfield Glade. October 23, 2009.

I’ve always felt that I was pretty good at handling life’s little setbacks and disappointments.  I thought I could handle any adversity, but I’m beginning to have second thoughts.

As you know, Betsy is in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, with her childhood girlfriends.  She didn’t want me to be bored while she was gone, so she left me with a fairly extensive ‘honey-do’ list.  The two biggest items on the list were mowing the lawn (and picking up the leaves) and stacking the firewood that we were expecting to be delivered.

I finished the lawn on Thursday and it looked pretty good, if I do say so myself.  And just before it got dark on Thursday, the firewood was delivered and dumped in the side yard.

Unfortunately wood wasn’t the only thing that came Thursday.  Thursday night brought high winds and rain which continued off and on until Friday afternoon.  When the rain finally ended I went out, picked up the many branches that had fallen  during the storm, and faced my dilemma.

As you can see from the picture above there is a lot of wood to be stacked, and there also a lot of leaves on the ground.  There’s more wood than I can stack in a single day and the leaves are wet, so it’s going to take more than a day to clean them all up.

So the question — is do I have the necessary courage to face Betsy with an incomplete ‘honey-do list’?  What do you think her reaction will be?  Do you think I’ll end up in the dog house?  Would it do any good to ask Betsy to extend her vacation so I have more time to finish the list?

I’m happy to report that all of our roses survived Sunday night’s low temperatures and I’m hopeful that we’ll get through Monday night just as successfully.

One advantage of the high pressure system over head is that in addition to cold nights we have clear, bright blue skies during the day.  I was working in the yard yesterday when I noticed these red leaves against the sky.  I couldn’t resist taking a picture and sharing it with you.

We woke up to rain Monday morning and a nice surprise in our garden — the iris in the picture above, Floor Show, was blooming.  We have several reblooming iris and their colorful blooms are a nice addition to this time of the year.

Betsy and I are leaving this morning for a couple of days in northern Georgia.  They are releasing water from the dam above Tallulah Gorge on Wednesday and we want to be there to see what the waterfalls looked like before the dam was built.  We’ve had this trip planned for several weeks.

Then on Friday we are going to Jacksonville for Ray’s (Betsy’s brother) memorial service.  We will get back home on Sunday and then on the following Tuesday I will take Betsy to Maggie Valley, North Carolina, for her getaway with her grade school girlfriends.

I can visit you using my iPod Touch, but unless I can pry Betsy’s laptop from her, I don’t think I’ll be able to post for much of that time.  But don’t give up on me — I’ll be back as soon as possible.

My World # 52: Autumn Color

Cooler temperatures and rain mean that autumn colors are starting to show up here on the Plateau of Tennessee.  Our dogwood tree and some of the trees across the street are starting to turn.  The picture above was taken after I had mowed and cleaned up fallen leaves.  So the grass is green and the roses are still blooming.  Autumn couldn’t be much nicer than that!

Our Lilies (4)

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

I thought I was going to be able to get a fair amount of work done in the yard yesterday, but after a sunny morning the rains returned.  We didn’t get a lot of rain, just enough to keep things wet and me inside.

One of the things that didn’t get done was planting some lily bulbs that came the other day.  The new flower bed we constructed in front of the house gets plenty of sunlight and we thought lilies would do well there.  Lilies are probably our second favorite flower after our roses.

We already have a quite a few lilies in our garden.  The collage above shows some of our lilies.  Other collages can be seen HERE, HERE and HERE.

My World # 49: The Look of Autumn

There’s a hint of autumn in the air here on the Plateau.  The leaves on our dogwood tree are getting reader and some of the trees are starting to drop leaves, as you can see in the picture above.

The temperatures are now cooler, which is something the roses like.  They are now starting to put on their fall show.  Not only are the blossoms pretty (at least we think so), but I can enjoy the fragrance any time I’m in the front yard.  Even mowing the lawn yesterday was a pleasant experience!
