As yet we don’t have much autumn color here in the Glade, but once the leaves start changing the results can be beautiful.  (This picture is from my archives.)

An Evening Sky

Often there is something peaceful and serene about an evening sky.  I got this photo of the sky above our house a few years ago.

Great Smoky Mountains

On our way back home from Asheville, North Carolina, in June, Betsy and I drove through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Along the way we stopped at the Charles A. Webb Overlook on Newfound Gap Road where I got this picture.  The clouds were as beautiful as the mountains.  June 24, 2025.

Clouds

Often clouds in the sky mean that some nasty weather is on the way.  But sometimes clouds in the sky are brimming with joy and are saying “Look up!  Enjoy this beautiful world that we have!”

Pisgah Evening Sky

I really don’t know which is more impressive at the Pisgah Inn — the mountains or the sky.  Every once in a while the two come together to create a stunning scene.  That’s what happened this past June 24.  We can’t see the setting sun from our room, but the sunlight caught the little cloud in the center of the photo and colored it with red and gold.  Is it any wonder the we keep going back?

Autumn in the Smokies

The Smokies are are wonderful to visit any time of the year, and Betsy and I try to get to them as often as we can.  I think Spring is our favorite season for visiting, but Autumn can be amazing as well.  We often drive the Foothills Parkway, which is technically outside the park, but which does provide beautiful views of the mountains.  I got this picture of the sky and the mountains from the parkway a few years ago.

An Evening Sky

I sometimes feel as if I don’t spend enough time looking up == specifically looking up at the sky.  There is so much variety and grandeur in the sky above us:  fascinating clouds and vibrant colors.  It’s a shame that all of this is missed because I spend so much time looking at things on the ground.

The picture above was taken on the golf course behind our house on a beautiful September evening.

Looking Glass Rock

Looking Glass Rock is a prominent landmark in the Pisgah Forest of North Carolina.  The rock — really a mountain — rises to an elevation of nearly 4,000 feet above the valley.  The granite surfaces of the mountain reflect the sunlight, which gave the mountain its name.

I got this picture of Looking Glass Rock from an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

An Evening Sky

While visiting my son in Florida this past March, we were sitting in his back yard enjoying the setting sun. After the sun disappeared, I captured this photo of the sky through the trees in the yard.

Fontana Lake

I captured this picture of Fontana Lake several years ago while Betsy and I were driving through the North Carolina side of the Smokey Mountains.  This part of the Smokies is often referred to as the quiet side of the Smokies.  That may be true, but it is as beautiful as any other section of the park.
