Skywatch Friday: Going . . . Gone

Betsy and I really enjoy traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway just about any time of the year.  Last month we went to Asheville, North Carolina, and drove on the Parkway  from Asheville to Mount Mitchell.  We then drove back to Asheville in the late afternoon.

We got to the Bull Creek Valley Overlook just as the sun started to drop below Swan Mountain in the distance.  Of course, we had to stop and grab our cameras.

It’s amazing how quickly the sun can disappear.  It’s also amazing how the beautiful sky can go through so many colors so quickly.

Skywatch Friday: A Mountain Sky

I really like the mountains, which is probably a good thing since I live in eastern Tennessee.  To me the mountains seem to be living — different in different seasons and even at different parts of the day.

The sky is a part of the mountain landscape.  Clouds and sky also change with the seasons and with the time of day.  The picture above was taken at Craggy Gardens on the Blue Ridge Parkway late in the afternoon on a November day.

Skywatch Friday: November Sunrise

Last week we had to get up earlier than usual so Betsy could keep an appointment to get her hair cut.  When I went to the car with her to see her off, I noticed this beautiful sky.  Of course I had to grab my camera and take a picture.

The picture above was taken from the street in front of our house, as you could probably guess from the power lines.  But the color was so nice that I’m posting it anyway.

I then went out onto the golf course in back of the house, where I didn’t have to worry about power lines.  The color of the sky was a little different, but the contrails (or clouds) were still very pretty.

I took this final picture a few moments later, just before the sun popped over the ridge to the east of our house.

Skywatch Friday: Morning Clouds over the Atlantic

On Wednesday I posted a picture taken looking out to sea from Ormond Beach, Florida (that picture can be seen by clicking HERE). I posted that picture because of the golden pink color of the water as the sun came up.

Turning to my right while on the balcony and looking down the beach, I got this picture.  I like the color of the clouds in this view.

Skywatch Friday: Autumn Skies

Last month Betsy and I went to the mountains to see the autumn colors, but the autumn skies were also pretty impressive.  Autumn skies are often a beautiful blue, and that was the case during the three days we were gone.  The picture above was taken on Balsam Mountain; it was a clear day and the mountains seemed to go on forever.

We had an early breakfast on our third morning.  When we came out of the restaurant it was still in shadows, but sunlight was touching the top of the ridge on the other side of the gap.

Skywatch Friday: The Sequatchie Valley

When Betsy and I went to Georgia this past Monday, we came off the Cumberland Plateau, drove through part of the Sequatichie Valley, and then drove over Signal Mountain to Chattanooga.  As we drove up the mountain I couldn’t resist the temptation to stop at an overlook and snap these pictures.

It was raining when we left home, although the weather started to clear as we drove along.  When we got to the overlook there was some blue in the sky, although the Plateau was still covered by clouds.

The clouds had lifted enough that we had a wonderful view of the valley.

Skywatch Friday: Autumn Sky, Autumn Color

Although we had some clouds and a few drops of rain on Tuesday night and Wednesday, most of the week has given us more brilliant blue skies.  We are also getting some autumn color, so I thought I would share a couple of sky views from our yard with some trees showing their colors.

Yesterday Betsy and I drove along the Foothills Parkway between Knoxville and  the Smokies.  It was a beautiful, clear day, and we took many pictures, as you can imagine.  We’ll be sharing some of those with you in the days ahead.

Skywatch Friday: Autumn Skies

Tuesday, while getting the pictures I used in yesterday’s post, I also experimented with using manual settings on the camera to get pictures of the white clouds in our beautiful blue sky.

We need rain, so I would have been delighted to see some dark rain clouds up there in the sky.  But since we had a bright beautiful day, I was happy with the way these pictures turned out.

Skywatch Friday: Cumberland Gap Skies

Last week Betsy and I spent a very beautiful  day at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.  It was a perfect autumn day — bright sunshine, blue skies and cool temperatures.

The picture above was taken from the parking lot of the Visitor Center shortly after we arrived.

Brush Mountain Sky, Hensley Settlement. September 23, 2010.

The first thing we did at the park was take a tour of the Hensley Settlement on top of Brush Mountain.  If anything the sky appeared to be even bluer.  There was a hint of color in the trees at the edge of the fields.

After dinner we drove up to the Pinnacle Overlook hoping to catch the sunset, but the sun was behind the mountains by the time we got to the overlook.  But the color of the sky was gorgeous.  I captured this picture of the sky and the reflection in Fern Lake far below.

Scenic Sunday #114: The Mountains

Although Betsy and I go to the beach each year, we really like the mountains.  I guess that’s a good thing since we live in eastern Tennessee.  The mountains in the picture above are in western North Carolina.  This picture was taken in July near Burnsville, North Carolina.
