Skywatch Friday # 34

The view from Sunset Point, Mt. Nebo, Arkansas. November, 2007.

The view from Sunset Point, Mt. Nebo, Arkansas. November, 2007.

I took the picture above in November, 2007, from Sunset Point at Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas.  Betsy and I had gone to the point to view the sunset and we found this pretty scene when we arrived.  The sun had not yet dropped to the mountains in west but was hidden behind the high clouds.

I decided to use this picture because Mt. Nebo is one of our favorite places to visit, and because we will be going back there next week to celebrate my birthday.  I would anticipate getting several more sky watch pictures while we’re there.  If I’m lucky we’ll also get some hiking in and will see some new waterfalls.

Scenic Sunday # 32

Sunrise on Mt. Nebo, Arkansas. December 4, 2008.

Sunrise on Mt. Nebo, Arkansas. December 4, 2008.

This is my post for Scenic Sunday.  You can join and share your scenic pictures with us, or visit beautiful scenes from around the world, by clicking HERE.

The picture above was taken last December at Mount Nebo State Park in Arkansas.    Betsy and I got up early one morning and went to Sunrise Point, which overlooks the Arkansas River valley.  In the picture, which can be enlarged, you can see the river at the extreme left, which is just beginning to show some reflected color from the rising sun.

The sun has not yet risen above the mountains on the other side of the valley, but the low clouds in the east are already sunlit.  It was the beginning of a beautiful day.

I’m happy to report that both Betsy and I are now using our new computers.  We had a small hiccup or two, but the file transfers went well.  I know I’m very happy with my new computer, and I think Betsy is as well.

Sunset in Fairfield Glade. February 8, 2009.

Sunset in Fairfield Glade. February 8, 2009.

This is my entry for Skywatch Friday.  Last week over 300 people from around the world shared their views of the sky.  To see more sky pictures, or to join the fun and join, click HERE.

Earlier this month I took my walk a little later than I usually do and captured the sunset above.  I usually view the sunset from the 14th tee of the golf course, but this picture was taken from the first tee.  This fairway is not quite as wide as the 14th and it is more level so the trees appear more numerous, but the sky is as glorious as ever.

Sunset off St. Maarten. September 11, 2001.

Sunset off St. Maarten. September 11, 2001.

Welcome to Sky Watch Friday if you would like to see more of the sky from all over the world click HERE.  Last week over 300 people shared their skies.

Cruises are very nice — there’s (too much) good food and beautiful scenery.  Betsy and I especially liked sunrises and sunsets at sea.  They were almost magical moments.

The picture above, which can be enlarged, is of a sunset off St. Maartens in the Caribbean.  We watched the sun sink toward the horizon, the ocean get darker and darker, and the sky fill with golds and reds.  It looked like a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Now look at the date — September 11, 2001.  We had heard about the World Trade Centers and had seen television footage.  There were many more questions than answers at that time.  How can such horror coexist with such beauty?

I don’t know the answer to that question — just as I don’t know the answer to many other questions.  But this I do know —

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
. . .
”Be still, and know that I am God; ‘”
— Psalm 46, 1 – 3, 10

Betsy and I hope to celebrate Valentine’s Day by seeing some new waterfalls, so we will be away from the computers for a couple of days.  Hopefully we will be back Sunday.  Have a happy Valentine’s Day and a great weekend.

Sunset off St. Lucia. September 13, 2001.

Sunset off St. Lucia. September 13, 2001.

I’ve posted a couple of pictures from our visit to St. Lucia on a cruise in 2001 and I would now like to share one on Skywatch Friday.

Betsy and I took a belated honeymoon cruise in the Caribbean in September, 2001.  There were many things we enjoyed about the cruise, but the sunrises and sunsets we saw from the ship were definitely high points.

The picture above was taken while watching the sunset off St. Lucia.  There was a heavy cloud bank off to the west of the ship and the sun has dropped behind it.  If you looked at the enlarged picture you can just make out a sliver of the sun between the ocean and the clouds.

I think what I like most about this picture is the color behind the dark clouds on the horizon.  This was one of the last pictures I got that day before the light disappeared completely.

A Glade Sunset. January 18, 2009.

A Glade Sunset. January 18, 2009.

The picture above, which can be enlarged by clicking on it, was taken from my favorite point  on the Druid Hills golf course for viewing the setting sun.

I got there a little later than I had planned, and the sun had already dropped below the ridge line.  I was a little disappointed, but stayed to get a few shots of the sky.  As it got darker , the light reflecting off the clouds got redder and redder until I got the rose color in the picture above.

I’m sorry that the picture is a little dark, but I didn’t want to try any editing.  What you see is what came out of the camera.

A Caribbean Sunrise

January 4, 2009
Sunrise off Antigua. September 12, 2001.

Sunrise off Antigua. September 12, 2001.

I was going through some old pictures when I found the picture above.  It was taken on our Caribbean cruise back in 2001.

We flew to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where we boarded the ship.  The ship left San Juan on a Sunday night and we slept fairly late on Monday.  But we got up early enough every other morning to see the sunrise.  Of course, we usually went back to bed after the sun was up, but after all it was a vacation!

This particular picture was taken on Wednesday morning as we approached Antigua.  I like it because the light reflected on the sea seems to be beckoning us to follow it into the sun.  Unfortunately the ship was headed in a slightly different direction.

Sunset from the 12th tee of Druid Hills Golf Course. January 1, 2009.

Sunset from the 12th tee of Druid Hills Golf Course. January 1, 2009.

Today was a cold but beautiful day here in the Glade.  Since the sky was so clear and blue I decided to walk to my favorite spot on the back nine of the golf course in order to view the setting sun.

My camera started to act up about the time I got there, but I did manage to get this picture of our first sunset of 2009.

Bali Ha’i

December 27, 2008
Sunset on Bali, June, 1987.

Sunset on Bali, June, 1987.

I was a junior member on the faculty of Heidelberg College in 1987 when I was selected to be part of an exchange program with a Chinese university in Tianjin, People’s Republic of China.  A team from Heidelberg would go to Tianjin to teach English as a Second Language and a Chinese professor would come to Heidelberg for the academic year to teach Chinese.

Part of our arrangement with the Chinese included a tour of parts of China, but because of differing calendars the tour was to be held before our teaching session rather than afterward.  The Chinese also invited spouses to come along for this part of the trip.

Although we had two children getting close to college age, I really wanted Elizabeth (my late wife) to go.  So we counted our pennies and signed Elizabeth up for the trip.

It was at this point that two of the senior faculty members decided it would be nice to leave the States a week early so we could visit Bali.  That really stretched our finances since the Chinese weren’t covering that part of the trip, but we scrapped up the money for the extra week and went.

The picture above was taken on Bali at sunset on an evening late in June.  It was like living a scene from a movie.

What’s That Strange Light in the Sky?

December 20, 2008

Saturday morning Betsy and I woke up to a strange light in the east.  At first we were confused as to the source of this light, but we finally discovered that it was something called ‘The Sun’!

Sunrise in Fairfield Glade. December 20, 2008.

Sunrise in Fairfield Glade. December 20, 2008.

One reason for our confusion is that we have had six days of rain and overcast skies.  Now don’t get me wrong — we really need the rain and I’m glad it finally came (better late than never)!  But after six days of clouds it was certainly nice to see something else in the sky.

Unfortunately, it didn’t last.  About an hour after taking this picture the clouds were back, and the rains returned after that.  But it was nice to see the sun even briefly.
