Our World: Where the Buffalo Roam

After visiting Mount Rushmore, Betsy and I drove to South Dakota’s Custer State Park.  One area of the park that was highly recommended was the Wildlife Loop, where we were assured that we would see plenty of wildlife.

Our friends were correct — we saw a wide variety of wildlife:  big horn sheep, burros, pronghorns and bison.  I’ve seen bison before, but never so many at one time.

Bison on the prairie in Custer State Park, South Dakota. September 25, 2012.

Seeing them on the prairie reminded me of descriptions of the huge buffalo herds encountered during the westward expansion of the United States.  At one time there were millions of bison in North America, but by 1900 it is estimated that fewer than 1,00 bison remained on the entire continent.

There are now as many as 1,300 head of bison in Custer State Park.  Bison can grow to 6 feet tall and weigh more than 2,000 pounds.  They are the largest native terrestrial mammal of North America.

The park holds a roundup each year to adjust the size of the herd according to the predicted availability of grassland forage.    The spring birthing season           rejuvenates the herd to approximately 1,300 head each year.

Air Force Chapel

October 3, 2012

The chapel at the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado. September 15, 2012.

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

On our second day in Colorado Springs, Betsy and I drove out to the Air Force Academy.  Both of us had seen pictures of the chapel many times, and we wanted to visit it in person.  As we walked toward the chapel (above) it was every bit as impressive as we had been led to believe.

But I thought the interior was even more impressive than the exterior.  The light and color inside the sanctuary was marvelous.  We walked around  sanctuary marveling at the beauty.  The colored squares let in a wonderful  streams of light.

The organ in the loft was also magnificent.

The overall effect of the color and light is to cause a person to look up.  That seems to be very appropriate for an Air Force chapel.

Our World: On the Road Again

October 1, 2012

The route of our trip out west in September.

As you’ve probably imagined, Betsy and I were on the road over the past couple of weeks.  We had a fabulous trip out west, and I want to share an overview of our 5,455 mile adventure.  The image above shows our trip on Google Earth.

We reached this Welcome Center in Colorado on September 13, 2012.

Our first major destination was Colorado Springs, where we visited Pikes Peak, the Garden of the Gods, and the Royal Gorge.  We also met with blog friends Sally and Jim.

Betsy at the Continental Divide at Milner Pass, Rocky Mountains National Park. September 17, 2012.

We then went on to the Rocky Mountain National Park, where we were able to drive the Old Fall River Road which had been closed by snow when we visited last year.  We also visited areas of the park that we didn’t get to last time.

Beehive Geyser, Yellowstone National Park. September 21, 2012.

Then it was off to Yellowstone.  We got to visit many sections of the park, and would be hard pressed to name a favorite area.  But in spite of all that we saw, we left many things unseen so we would have a good excuse to go back.  We also met blog friends Linda and Doug while at Yellowstone.

Betsy at Mount Rushmore. September 25, 2012.

We started home by way of Rapid City, South Dakota, where we visited Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park.

It was a marvelous trip, and I’m sure I’ll have much more to share in the days ahead as I work through some of the 2,000 pictures I took!

SkyWatch Friday: Gaither Mountain Sunrise

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

On our last morning in Arkansas Betsy and I got up before dawn to watch the sun rise from Gaither Mountain near Harrison, Arkansas.  We had traveled over the mountain the previous day and we knew the view was spectacular.

What we didn’t know is that we would be delayed by a road construction project that started before dawn.  So the sky was already showing color by the time we got to the overlook (see photo above).

It took a while, but after a while the sun started to put in an appearance.

Later we were able to enjoy the sun in all of its golden glory.  What a marvelous way to begin a day.

Looking For Waterfalls in a Drought

August 22, 2012

Tomahawk Creek near Mountain View, Arkansas. August 5, 2012.

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

Don’t get me wrong — Betsy and I had a wonderful time in Arkansas as we celebrated her birthday.  But I have to admit that our timing wasn’t the greatest.  We enjoy ‘collecting’ waterfalls, and we planned our trip — several months ago — in order to see some waterfalls in a part of Arkansas we hadn’t visited before.

But Arkansas is in the midst of a terrible drought.  We thought things were dry here in eastern Tennessee, but the situation is much worse in Arkansas.  We were amazed at how dry and brown the pastures and lawns appeared.

Tomahawk Creek, Mountain View, Arkansas. August 5, 2012.

All of the rivers we saw were low, and many of the creeks were bone dry.  The two above pictures show Tomahawk Creek near Mountain View, Arkansas.

We hiked the Lost Valley Trail of the Buffalo National River.  Although there was no water in Clark Creek which paralleled the trail, we enjoyed the hike.  Since there was no water in the creek, we were able to explore a natural bridge carved by the creek in greater detail than we could if water had been flowing (more about that in a later post).

We didn’t see the waterfalls we had hoped to see, but we did enjoy our trip very much.

Our World: Rotier’s Restaurant

August 20, 2012

Betsy at Rotier’s Restaurant, Nashville, Tennessee. June 23, 2012.

After celebrating our anniversary by walking around Centennial Park in June, Betsy and I had lunch at Rotier’s restaurant.  Rotier’s is near the park, and serves some of the most delicious burgers I’ve ever had.  It’s not a fancy place, but it is a local favorite and is often crowded.

The front dining area of Rotier’s has many autographed photos on the wall. Nashville, Tennessee, June 23, 2012.

We wanted to have lunch at Rotier’s because it’s a special place for us.  We had lunch there on our second date back in 2001.  I don’t remember what I had to eat at that time, but our visit was memorable.

On that April date Betsy and I visited the interior of the Parthenon and the art museum.  Betsy, self-sufficient woman that she is, wanted to pay for her own admission, but I pointed out that going inside was my idea and I should pay.  It took some doing, but she finally agreed to let me pay for our admission.  However, Betsy absolutely insisted on buying our lunch.  So after leaving the Parthenon we headed to Rotier’s, which had been recommended to both of us.

After a delightful lunch, Betsy pulled out her credit card and went up to the cashier to pay.  She was politely informed that Rotier’s didn’t accept credit cards.  My Sweet Date put her credit card away and pulled out her checkbook — Rotier’s didn’t accept checks.

By this time I was having trouble keeping a straight face.  But we fortunately were able to come up with enough cash to pay for lunch.

We had no problems paying for our lunch on our anniversary.  Rotier’s now accepts credit cards.

Down Memory Lane: The Great Wall

August 17, 2012

Scenes from a visit to the Great Wall of China in 1987.

I first saw the Great Wall of China in 1987.  I was in China with a group of other professors from our college on an exchange program.  In some ways it’s hard to believe that so many years have passed since then, but the memories are still fresh.  These are just some of the pictures I took on that memorable day.

Is She Trying to Tell Me Something?

August 13, 2012

Betsy’s ‘dream house’ in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas.  August 5, 2012.

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

When Betsy lived and worked in Houston, Texas, she often spent the week after Christmas on vacation in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas.  Since we were in the area while celebrating Betsy’s birthday, she decided to show me around.

After finding the timeshare she used to own, Betsy decided she wanted to drive down to the lake.  She said this is something she did on every visit.  On our way to the lake she told me about a beautiful house that she liked very much.  She always told her friends (and her sons) that the house was her ‘dream house’ and that she would own it some day.

Another view of Betsy’s ‘dream house’, Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. August 5, 2012.

We drove by the house, and I must admit that it is very pretty.  We only saw the front yard, but I liked the wooded setting.  The house has a nice long deck along the front.  I must admit that I liked it as well.

Before you read any further, I need to remind you that the first time I ever went to Fairfield Glade is when Betsy wanted to show me where she stayed during a vacation in Tennessee several years ago.  You’ll see the relevance of this statement when you scroll down.

Betsy has that mischievous look on her face. I wonder why?

Do you think Betsy is trying to tell me something?

SkyWatch Friday: St. Lucia Skies

July 13, 2012

Sunrise off St. Lucia in the Caribbean. September 13, 2001.

I went to my archives for these pictures of the skies above and around St. Lucia in the Caribbean.  These photos are from the cruise Betsy and I took in September, 2001.

The day started with a beautiful sunrise over the sea (above) as we approached St. Lucia.

Clouds over St. Lucia. September 13, 2001.

We spent most of the day on a catamaran cruise along the coast.  In the early afternoon the clouds over the island seemed to  come down and touch the mountains.

The day ended as gloriously as it began, with a beautiful sunset as we headed back out to sea.

Our World: Morning on the Blue Ridge Parkway

In early April Betsy and I spent a couple of nights in the mountains of Western North Carolina.  Early one morning we went up to the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It was a beautiful day with a gorgeous blue sky, but we could see clouds blanketing the valleys below us.  The picture above was taken at the Grassy Ridge Mine Overlook on the parkway.

This picture was taken at the same overlook.  The leaves weren’t out yet on the trees, but the clouds in the sky above and the clouds in the valley below made this overlook an enchanting part of our world.

I find it hard to believe, but this is the 1,000th post I’ve done on this blog.  When I started, I would never have imagined that it would go on this long.  But I do want to say ‘Thank you’ to all of the wonderful people I’ve met who have shared this adventure with me.
