A couple of weeks ago I shared some pictures of St. Maarten from our honeymoon cruise in 2001.  We were on St. Maarten on 9/11, which made for a very surreal day.

Our first port of call was Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands.  While there we took a sea plane ride in the morning over some of the other nearby islands.  In the afternoon we took a tram to Paradise Point, a park and overlook that offered some fantastic views of the harbor and ocean.

We were in St. Augustine, Florida, the day before Betsy’s birthday this year.  We stopped to visit Castillo San Marcos.  The day was beautiful with white clouds floating through a blue sky.    It seemed possible to step back in time on such a day.

My World # 50: Yorktown Battlefield

In June, 2007, Betsy and I made an anniversary trip to Virginia.  We went to spend several days at Colonial National Historical Park and at Williamsburg.

The siege of Yorktown in 1781 was the last major battle of the American Revolution.  It came about after a French fleet defeated a British fleet at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, making it impossible for British Lord Cornwallis to get help or to escape by sea.  The American and French army marched to Yorktown on September 28, 1781, and after a week of preparation, constructed their first siege line on October 6.  They began bombarding British positions on October 9.

After a round-the-clock bombardment that lasted nine days, Cornwallis requested a cease fire to discuss surrender terms.  Two day later, on October 19, 1781, he formally surrendered his army.  As the British army marched to the field to lay down their arms, the British fife and drum corps play “The World Turned Upside Down”.  When Lord North, the British prime minister, learned of Cornwallis’s defeat, he is reported to have cried, “Oh God!  It is all over!”

Memories of Atlanta

Betsy at Stone Mountain, Georgia. June 2, 2009.

Betsy at Stone Mountain, Georgia. June 2, 2009.

One of the advantages of having so much rain over the last few days is that I’ve had the opportunity to work on some of my older pictures that had been copied to disk to be worked on ‘later’.  Well, ‘later’ came this past week, and I have enjoyed working with pictures that I had practically forgotten about.

One of the folders I found was of pictures taken in Atlanta, Georgia, in June, 2001, about three weeks before Betsy and I were married.  We had been invited to the wedding of the oldest son of one of Betsy’s childhood friends.  Since Betsy and Susan, the mother, were good friends, we were invited to come down early for the rehearsal dinner on Friday evening.  I got to meet another of Betsy’s childhood friends, Nita, and learn some things about my future bride that I didn’t know (all good, of course).

Saturday morning Betsy and I went to Stone Mountain Park outside of Atlanta to enjoy the day and see some of the scenic attractions of that beautiful area.  After an enjoyable few hours at the park we went back to the city for the wedding and reception.

Scenic Sunday # 62: Charleston

The picture above was taken on the seawall of Charleston Harbor in Charleston, South Carolina.  It shows some of the beautiful homes on East Battery Street, many of which date back to the Civil War.  Fort Sumter, site of the first shots of the Civil War, is in the harbor off to the right.  Behind me and to the left is White Point Gardens, more commonly known as The Battery.

I lived in South Carolina for three years and have visited Charleston several times.  It’s a beautiful city and I thoroughly enjoy walking through the the historic district (as long as it’s not too hot!).

The picture above was taken in June, 2008, when Betsy and I visited Charleston on our anniversary trip.  If you would like to see some more scenes from the area around The Battery, click HERE.

Skywatch Friday: Oh, What a Beautiful Morning

No, the picture above was not taken in Oklahoma, but in Ormond Beach, Florida.  It was the day after Betsy’s birthday and we would be heading home later in the day.  But when this morning picture was taken we were able to enjoy the start of a new day as the sun came up over the Atlantic.

Watery Wednesday # 53: The American Falls

The American Falls at Niagara. August 30, 2002.

We got some much-needed rain here on the Plateau yesterday and I had a chance to work on some old pictures.  In the process I came across some forgotten pictures from a trip that Betsy and I took in 2002 to Niagara Falls.  I even came across a folder with pictures that I don’t even remember seeing before.  The picture above is one of the pictures from that folder.

We stayed in Canada while we were at the falls, but we did spend one day on the American side.  While there we went down to the base of the American Falls and then walked to an observation deck on the side of the falls.  That’s where the picture above was taken.  The sight and sound of all that water tumbling over the falls is absolutely tremendous.

Eight Years Ago Today — Barbados

September 14, 2009
Barbados

The view from Gun Hill Station, Barbados. September 14, 2001.

Last week Betsy did a post about where we were on September 11, 2001.  We were on a cruise that week (a belated honeymoon) and that got me to thinking about that cruise.

Eight years ago today (September 14) we were on the island of Barbados, the last island on our cruise.  Barbados is the eastern-most island of the Caribbean islands.  Barbados was a British colony from 1625 – 1966, when it became an independent nation of the British Commonwealth.

While on Barbados we visited Gun Hill Signal Station, which was the largest and most important of the British military outposts on the island.  We also visited St. John Parish Church (Betsy was still a Methodist minister at that time and enjoyed checking out the Anglican church), and Sunbury Plantation, a 300-year old plantation on the island.

Betsy, in her blog yesterday, told about our day on September 11, 2001.  The beauty of St. Maarten in  the Caribbean was a surreal contrast to the events taking place in the United States.

The picture above was taken as our ship was leaving Philipsburg, our port of call in St. Maarten.   In spite of all the tragedy of the day,  This scene gave us a sense of calm and peace.

Watery Wednesday # 52: White Water

White Water Walk, Niagara Falls, Ontario. August 29, 2009.

White Water Walk, Niagara Falls, Ontario. August 29, 2002.

While we were in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Betsy and I were fascinated by both the American and Canadian Falls.  But there are many more watery scenes to enjoy.  The picture above was taken at White Water Walk, an observation deck 230 feet down in the gorge below the falls.  The stretch of the Niagara River here is known as Whirlpool Rapids.  It is a Class 6 white water rapid with water moving at about 30 mph.

Needless to say, I was delighted to be on firm ground when I took this picture.
