Watery Wednesday #148: The Colorado River

July 13, 2011

The Grand Canyon and Colorado River from the Desert View overlook. June 14, 2011.

Betsy and I got our first look at the Grand Canyon at the Desert View overlook on the eastern end of the park.  That overlook also provided a good view of the Colorado River.  I always thought that ‘colorado’ meant ‘color red’, but the river looked more green than red.  I’m not complaining, though, the sight was spectacular.

Watery Wednesday #147: The Frozen Variety

Cedar Breaks National Monument, near Cedar City, Utah, was a last minute addition to our itinerary.  After we arrived in Utah on June 18, our good friend Neal suggested that we visit Cedar Breaks.

We did an internet search and found that the roads in Cedar Breaks had been opened on June 17.  We also found we could include a visit to the Monument while driving to see some of the places we had planned to visit.

The elevation at Cedar Breaks varies from 10,100 to 10,500 feet.  As we approached the Monument, my little bride was delighted to see snow on the mountain tops.  As we drove into the park with snow piled high on both sides of the road, Betsy was like a kid in a candy shop, as you can see from the picture above.

We asked a ranger how much snow they had gotten over the winter, and he said they had 395 inches by May 31, which was the ‘official’ end of their winter season.  However, it had snowed several times since then, including the day before we got there.

If you know anything at all about Betsy, you know she was excited with all that snow around.  And, of course, we had to find a place where she could get out and walk in the snow.  She did not, however, make a snowman for me.

Watery Wednesday #142: West Prong Falls

June 1, 2011

West Prong Falls, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee. May 23, 2011.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

West Prong Falls is a small (10 feet) waterfall on the West Prong of Little River in the Smokies.  It is right along the road on the way to Cades Cove, just past the Tremont turnoff.  Betsy and I stop there each time we pass to enjoy the water rushing over the bedrock.  The moss on some of the rocks gives the water a green sheen, and provides a very refreshing stop on a drive through the Smokies.

Watery Wednesday #141: Cane Creek Falls

Cane Creek Falls, Fall CreekFalls State Park, Tennessee. April 21, 2001.

Fall Creek Falls State Park here in Tennessee contains six major waterfalls.  Cane Creek Falls can be seen from the side at the Nature Center, but did get this view it is necessary to either cross a swinging bridge or hike over from Fall Creek Falls.  Either route gives a pleasant hike through the woods.

The pier on Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, is a great visual landmark that can be seen all along the beach.

Watery Wednesday #139: Bull Sluice

"I wonder if it's too late to change my mind?" Bull Sluice on the Chattooga River. April 30, 2011.

On our way to the beach Betsy and I stopped by Bull Sluice on the Chattooga River.  Bull Sluice is a Class V whitewater rapid, and we saw several kayakers shoot the rapid while we were at the observation deck.

I was fortunate to be able to read the mind of this kayaker as he went through the rapids.

"So far, so good!"

"I think I'm going to get wet!!!"

"Oops!!"

What happened?  If you look at the tip of the arrow in the last picture, you can almost see the end of his paddle.

Watery Wednesday #137: Piney Falls

Piney Falls is a beautiful waterfall in Fall Creek Falls State Park here in Tennessee.  Unfortunately the waterfall is practically inaccessible.  This photo was taken with my long lens from the overlook about half a mile away.

Watery Wednesday #136: Bass Pond Falls

April 20, 2011

Bass Pond Falls, Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina. March 14, 2011.

As most of you know, Betsy and I find it hard to go any place without looking for a waterfall or two.  When we were at Biltmore in February we noticed a Waterfall Trail, but didn’t have time to check it out.  Last week we walked that trail and came to the waterfall shown above.

True, Bass Pond Falls is man-made.  The falls is formed by a dam built to create the bass pond.  But it is still a pretty 15-foot drop.

Watery Wednesday #135: Threads of Water

The lighting wasn’t the greatest, but I like the way the water flowed over and around rocks at Big Branch Falls near Erwin, Tennessee.  A slow shutter speed created threads of water flowing down the hill.

Watery Wednesday # 134: Garvan Gardens

Garvan Gardens Falls, Hot Springs, Arkansas. March 28, 2011.

Garvan Gardens is a beautiful woodlands garden near Hot Springs, Arkansas.  The main attractions are the beautiful flowers and shrubs, but Garvan Gardens also has some wonderful water features, including Garvan Gardens Falls in the picture above.

Pool surrounded by shrubs in Garvan Gardens, Hot Springs, Arkansas. March 28, 2011.

Unfortunately that part of Arkansas is going through a drought this year, so the streams and pools have less water than they did the first time we visited.  But they still make a beautiful picture among all the shrubbery.
