Watery Wednesday #126: Barefoot Landing Reflections

February 9, 2011

Reflections at Barefoot Landing, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. December 21, 2010.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

When Betsy and I visited the Carolinas in December, we stopped by Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina one evening after dinner.  The boardwalks across the lake were lighted and decorated with lights for Christmas.  Those lights, and the buildings along the far shore, created some beautiful reflections that attracted my attention.

My World: Relieved, Not Happy

February 8, 2011

Mom, Dad and me, Crown Point, Indiana. October, 1943.

This is my post for the My World meme.  It is hosted by Klaus, Ivar, Sandy, Wren, and Fishing Guy.  To learn more about our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.

As you may know, Betsy and I have spent the last couple of years helping my parents at their home in Hendersonville.  Dad is 98, Mom is 90 and they are both legally blind.

They are also very stubborn and have insisted that they can get along just fine at home by themselves.  After much pleading they finally agreed to let Meals on Wheels bring them meals, and a caregiver visit them three times a week.  Although this was an improvement, it still left them alone much too often as far as my sister, Betsy and I were concerned.  Both Mom and Dad have fallen and have needed help getting up.

My sister Janet has been trying for several years to get Mom and Dad to move to Tullahoma and live with her.  She has a little area in her home fixed up for them.  Her husband has to have a full-time sitter, who can also keep an eye on the folks.

Mom and Dad have resisted moving, but after many discussions with us, their doctor, and members of their church, they have agreed to try living down there.  Janet took them home with her this past Friday, and if things go well, we’ll move some of their furniture down next week.

I know that encouraging them to move to Janet’s home was the right thing to do, but doing it wasn’t easy and didn’t make me feel especially happy.  Please keep these two wonderful people (and the rest of us) in your prayers.

The picture above was taken in 1943.  I had much more hair back then!

Scenic Sunday #133: Brush Mountain

February 6, 2011

Brush Mountain, Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. September 23, 2010.

This is my post for the Scenic Sunday meme, which shares beautiful scenes from around the world.  To see more Scenic Sunday posts, or to join and show your own pictures, click HERE.

In September, while visiting Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Betsy and I toured the Hensley Settlement.  The Hensley Settlement was established in 1904 by Sherman Hensley and was occupied until the establishment of the park in 1951.  I took this photo while walking along a fence-lined lane on top of Brush Mountain.

Skywatch Friday: Snow and Blue Skies

February 4, 2011

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

Although we’ve had a fair amount of snow this year (but not enough for Betsy), the skies have been dreary and gray.  So I went to my archives to get this picture taken from our deck of a new snow under a blue Tennessee sky.

Down Memory Lane: Our Wedding

February 3, 2011

I recently came across a file of pictures from our wedding and posted them online.

Betsy and I got married on June 23 in a small ceremony at a Methodist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee.  It was an outdoor ceremony, and although it had poured down rain the day before, we had a beautiful day for the wedding.

We only invited family to the wedding, and everyone was able to come except Betsy’s youngest son Jeff, who was told at the last minute that he had to work that day.

I often tease Betsy because she made me wait until June before we could get married, but I have to admit that the wedding — which she mostly planned — was very nice.  She did good.

Watery Wednesday #125: Tallulah River

February 2, 2011

Tallulah River, Tallulah Gorge State Park, Georgia. October 14, 2009.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

A couple of weeks ago I published a picture taken from the south rim of Tallulah Gorge (you can see it HERE) showing the suspension bridge that lets you cross the gorge.  I mentioned that getting to the bridge involved going down (and then back up) 600 steps.

If you navigate those steps and get to the bottom of the gorge, this is the view of the Tallulah River that you can enjoy.

My World: Woodpecker Buffet

February 1, 2011

Dead tree in the vacant lot next door. January 28, 2010.

This is my post for the My World meme.  It is hosted by Klaus, Ivar, Sandy, Wren, and Fishing Guy.  To learn more about our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.

The dead tree in the photo above is in the vacant lot below our house here in the Glade.  We’ve noticed the holes in the tree for a couple of years, but now the holes that were there seem larger and there seem to be more of them.

I’ve decided that this dead tree is really a woodpecker buffet.  Woodpeckers come and get what they want to eat — the different holes simply represent the locations of different insects.  The size of the hole gives an indication of how popular that particular dish actually is.

Betsy is skeptical about my theory, but it makes perfect sense to me.  There’s only one problem.  If the woodpeckers don’t curb their appetites soon, the whole buffet is going to come crashing down.
