Down Memory Lane: Our Wedding

February 3, 2011

I recently came across a file of pictures from our wedding and posted them online.

Betsy and I got married on June 23 in a small ceremony at a Methodist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee.  It was an outdoor ceremony, and although it had poured down rain the day before, we had a beautiful day for the wedding.

We only invited family to the wedding, and everyone was able to come except Betsy’s youngest son Jeff, who was told at the last minute that he had to work that day.

I often tease Betsy because she made me wait until June before we could get married, but I have to admit that the wedding — which she mostly planned — was very nice.  She did good.

Family Day

November 15, 2010

My daughter and her husband, Hendersonville, Tennessee. November 11, 2010.

This past Thursday Betsy and I went to Hendersonville to see and help out  my parents.  Mom and Dad are doing about as well as can be expected.  We were able to help them with some odd jobs around the house and with their grocery shopping.  They were in pretty good spirits, which is always encouraging.

An added bonus for the day was that we were able to have lunch with my daughter and her husband.  They were in Nashville on business and made time to have lunch with us in Hendersonville.  We had a delicious lunch of seafood and lots of nice conversation.  So in spite of the long drive to Hendersonville and back it was a wonderful day.

My World: High School Football

October 5, 2010

Waiting for the team to take the field, Bearden High School, Knoxville, Tennessee. September 30, 2010.

This is my post for the My World meme.  It is hosted by Klaus, Ivar, Sandy, Wren, and Fishing Guy.  To learn more about our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.

This past Thursday Betsy and I drove to Knoxville to see a high school football game.  Actually we went to see the band which was performing at the game, since Betsy’s grandson, Landon, is a member of the band.

This game was somewhat unique for me since I got to sit and watch the entire game.  Now don’t get me wrong — I’ve been to many high school football games.  But both of my children were in the marching band at their school, so much of my time at games was spent in Band Parents’ concession stands.

Half-time show, Bearden High School, Knoxville, Tennessee. September 30, 2010.

Since Landon is in the band, we have many more pictures of the band than we do of the football team.  The above picture shows much of the band during their half-time show.

The handsome young man on the left is Landon.  He’s a percussionist and, as a freshman, is not marching this year, although he expects to next year.

As many of you know, I have been using a geotagger with my camera to record our location when we take pictures.  Using the information on the above pictures I found this picture of the stadium on Google Earth.  We were in the nose-bleed section of the stands near the press box.

Happy Birthday, Dad

August 29, 2010

The handsome young man in the picture above is my Dad.  Dad is celebrating his 98th birthday today.  The picture was made in 1938 as a Christmas present for my mother.

Dad was born in Texas, but while he was still a young boy the family moved to Arkansas.  They took the train to Arkansas, which Dad still remembers.  They then rode to their new home in the Ozarks in a covered wagon.  So he has experienced life from the covered wagon to space travel.  Dad met Mom when he was in the CCC working at a state park near her hometown in southern Indiana.

What I remember most about Dad is that he could do just about everything.  He built our house in Indiana mostly by himself.  In 1963 he was one of four people that his company took with them in a move from Indiana to Tennessee.  When he got close to retirement age he felt he wouldn’t have anything to do, so he taught himself to repair small appliances.  He once got a call on Thanksgiving Day from June Carter Cash asking him to fix a stove that had quit working and was threatening to ruin the Cash family’s Thanksgiving.  Dad made a house call and saved the day.  Mom made him give up his repair business when he turned 80, but even today people will stop him to tell him how much they appreciate the work he did for them.

Dad learned to use a computer when he was 90 and used it every day until he became legally blind about a year ago.  Until that time he was still fixing the roof of his house and doing other chores that we tried to tell him he shouldn’t be doing.  He just went ahead and did things anyway.

He has had to slow down since losing most of his eyesight.  Mom is also legally blind, and although my sister Janet and I would like them to live with Janet — she’s asked them to — they want to remain in their own home.  We have to admire their independence even though we do worry about them.  We check on them by phone every day and one of us goes every week to help them out.  Young adults at their church also help them out.  I guess they are doing about as good as can be expected under the circumstances.

Mom and Dad have been married for 71 years, and although it’s not her birthday I’m including this picture of Mom since the two of them are rarely if ever seen apart.  This picture was taken in February, 1940, about three months before Mom and Dad got married.

Last night Dad said that today was ‘just another day’.  I don’t agree — I think it’s a very special day.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Return to Fall Creek Falls

April 22, 2010

George Hole, Fall Creek Falls State Park, Tennessee. April 21, 2010.

As I mentioned yesterday that we would do, Betsy and I went back to Fall Creek Falls State Park (about an hour from our home) to celebrate the ninth anniversary of our date there.  We essentially retraced the steps of that magical day in 2001.

One of the places we visited that day was the green area pictured above.  Back in 2001 it didn’t have a name, but a last year a sign appeared calling it ‘George Hole’.  I have no idea how that name came about, but who am I to argue?

In the afternoon of April 21, 2001, after a day of hiking and visiting waterfalls, Betsy and I spread out a blanket in about the middle of this picture and I proceeded to show her an album of photos from my year in China.  We looked at those pictures, talked about my experiences and some other things.  It was about then that I got that first kiss.

The best part of the day. April 21, 2010.

We didn’t have a blanket with us yesterday, but I did get that kiss!

Happy Easter

April 3, 2010

Bob and Kelly on Easter Sunday, 1977. Black Mountain, North Carolina.

The picture above is not very good — it’s a copy of an old photograph that I came across recently.  It shows my son and daughter showing off their Easter eggs behind our home on Easter Sunday in 1977.  Bob was eight years old and Kelly was five.  We had come home from church and they were looking for the eggs the Easter bunny had hidden in the yard.

We were living in Black Mountain, North Carolina, at the time.  I was teaching mathematics at what was then Montreat-Anderson College in Montreat, North Carolina, only a couple of miles up the road.  Our house was small, but it had a big back  yard for the kids to play in.

Betsy and I are taking off a couple of days off to enjoy Easter with family.  I expect us to be out of pocket until Monday evening, so my next post will probably be Tuesday morning.  But I hope all of you have a blessed and joyous Easter.  I hope the weekend will bring all of you many happy memories.

The Days Are Getting Busier

April 1, 2010

Some of our roses from 2009

Yesterday was a beautiful day here in the Glade — the sky was blue and the temperatures were warm.  It was a great day for working out in the yard, which both Betsy and I did in the afternoon.  I’ve got about half of our roses uncovered and trimmed back and I’m happy to report that they all look pretty good so far.  Since I spent so much time working outside today on the roses, I’m sharing a few more from last year in the collage above.

Today (Thursday) Betsy and I are heading over to Hendersonville to help out my parents.  Although they  seem to be fine when we talk to them on the phone, each time we are with them it becomes more obvious that they are quickly reaching the point where they need more than long-distance help.  But it is one thing for us to see that and a completely different thing for them to agree.

We greatly admire their desire to remain independent, but both my sister and I wish we could get them to accept more help.  Until then we will continue to do the best we can to look after them.

We’ll be gone all day today, so I’m going to be even further behind visiting your sites.  But I promise I will get caught up — one of these days!

Down Memory Lane: Our Texas Visit

March 22, 2010

Scenes from our trip to Texas. April, 2009.

In April, 2009, Betsy and I went to Texas to visit our family down there.  We went down there to see our granddaughters play softball.  Both are outstanding athletes and they had games scheduled through the weekend.

Unfortunately, the weather  had other ideas.  Very severe thunderstorms moved through the area (with a couple of tornadoes for good measure) and caused wide-spread flooding.  All the games were canceled.

Instead of seeing games the day after the storms, Betsy’s son took us around to see some of the damage around them caused by Hurricane Ike six months previous.  The amount of damage still visible was really amazing.

We did see signs of progress and normalcy both on the Texas mainland and on Galveston Island.  On the western end of the island we found a beach that looked like it did before the hurricane struck.

We didn’t get to see the girls play softball, but we did  have an enjoyable time with our family on our Texas visit.

I’m grateful that our family got through the hurricane unhurt and with no damage to their home.

Skywatch Friday:

March 19, 2010

Blue skies in the Glade. March 12, 2010.

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

The scene above may not appear to be much to many of you, but we think it’s absolutely  gorgeous.  Yesterday (Thursday) was the first day in a week in which we were able to see blue sky.  And it was the first time in a week in which the clouds were white instead of gray or black.  In short, the sky was beautiful.  I hope we soon have many more days like this.

My Dad got a good report from the doctor and we found Mom and Dad to both be in good spirits.  We were able to run some errands and help with some chores around the house, so it was a good and productive visit.

Today I’m grateful for each opportunity I have to spend a day with my parents.

Down Memory Lane: November, 2001

March 8, 2010

Scenes from November, 2001.

Several weeks ago I came across a folder of pictures taken back in November, 2001.  That was the first November that Betsy and I were together.  It was also the first November that Betsy had been in Tennessee after several years in Louisiana and Texas, so she was still going ‘ga-ga’ over every bit of autumn color of she saw.

The highlight of the month was a trip we made to Saint Augustine, Florida, to see Betsy’s brother, Ray, and his wife Evelyn.  We went out for Thanksgiving dinner and were joined by Betsy’s son, Bert, and her grandson, Chris.

Ray and Evelyn gave us a tour of Saint Augustine while we were down there.  We visited the lighthouse as well as Ray and Evelyn’s church.  While at the the church Betsy practiced her preaching style from the pulpit.  It’s too bad there were only three of us in the congregation!

My sweet bride is ‘kidnapping’ me for a few days to celebrate my birthday.  She hasn’t told me where we are going, but I suspect our trip might involve some waterfalls.  I don’t know how often we’ll have internet connections, but I’ll try to visit with my iPod whenever I can.
