I went to my archives for this picture of a Cumberland Plateau sunset.  I got this image on the Druid Hills Golf Course in Fairfield Glade.  The sun had already dropped below the Plateau, but there was still an orange glow along the horizon.  We were reminded once again about the beautiful place in which we live.

This is the scene Betsy and I enjoyed on our first evening on Mt. Nebo in Arkansas.  We were on the back porch of ‘our’ cabin as we were treated to a spectacular sunset.  The color in the sky was simply amazing.

The picture above was taken this past October on the Gatlinberg Bypass.  Betsy and I had gotten up early in the morning to see the autumn color in the Smokies.  The morning was cloudy and murky, and it looked as if we had picked a poor day for our trip.  But as we were taking the bypass around Gatlinberg, the sun broke through the clouds and blue skies started to appear.  I like the streaks of light on the mountain in the background and the sunny highlights in the foreground.

We celebrated Betsy’s birthday in 2009 at Ormond Beach, Florida.  We had a room that looked out over the ocean, but I captured this beautiful sky photo by going to the other side of the building and shooting the western sky shortly after sunset.  The landscape may not be as pretty as the ocean, but the sky couldn’t be any more glorious.

SkyWatch Friday: Smoky Mountains Sky

A rock slide closed the interstate on the morning Betsy and I were coming home from Asheville, North Carolina.  Our choices for alternate routes were a very long detour on the interstates or a drive through the Smoky Mountains.  We considered our choices for about two seconds and headed for the Smokies.

The day started out with clear blue skies, but clouds developed in the afternoon.  I snapped this picture of the sky and mountains at an overlook on Newfound Gap road in North Carolina.  You have to look closely, but you can see the sunbeams that attracted my attention.  It took us longer to get home than it would have if we had taken the interstate, but the scenery certainly couldn’t be beat.

When going through some computer files the other day, I came across this photo of a nearly full moon in a blue sky.  It was taken in May, 2009, at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  Since I misfiled it, I thought it deserved to be shared on Skywatch Friday.

SkyWatch Friday: Icy Trees, Blue Skies

We’ve had a mild winter so far this year, and I’m not complaining,  But I will admit that snow — and even ice — can be beautiful as long as I don’t have to drive in it.  I took this picture in our yard a couple of years ago, and thing the icy branches look good against the blue sky.

Even though it’s January with cold temperatures and gray skies, it’s nice to remember the blue skies and white clouds of summer.  This picture was taken in June here on the Cumberland Plateau not far from our house.

I was going through some of my archived photos when I came across this picture of the moon taken back in June, 2010.  Looking more closely at the photo, I noticed craters and ridges on the lower left side of the moon.  This may be the best picture of the moon I have taken that shows these features.  I’m posting a photo that is large and can be enlarged twice.  That’s the best way to see the craters and ridges.  I hope you find the photo as interesting as I do.

Scenic Sunday: Evening in the Mountains

Evenings in the mountains can be magical times.  We were visiting our friends Judy and Charlie at their cabin near Otto, North Carolina, when I snapped this picture.  The sun was starting to drop behind the mountains, and mist was rising in the valleys.  The dead tree seemed to add a sense of mystery to the scene.
