Betsy’s Getting Her Wish!

January 30, 2010

Our front yard in the early afternoon, Fairfield Glade. January 29, 2010.

I can’t begin to tell you how happy my Beautiful Bride is this morning.  She’s been waiting for almost four years for a day like this.

She actually started smiling Friday afternoon.  It began snowing late Friday morning and by early afternoon the street, driveway and yard were pretty much covered in white as you can see from the picture above.

But much to Betsy’s delight, it just kept snowing.  By late afternoon we had a couple of inches on the ground.  Even our newly repaired wall looked good in the snow.

Still snowing after dark. January 29, 2010.

Best of all it just kept snowing.  This is what it looked like just before I began writing this post.  I don’t know how much snow we will finally have — it’s supposed to keep snowing until noon Saturday.  Some forecasts say we will have 7 to 9 inches by the time the storm ends.

I predict Betsy will be absolutely giddy today!

I’m grateful for the beauty of newly fallen snow and the way it makes the world seem new and clean.

Watery Wednesday #69: A Snowy Walk in the Glade

January 6, 2010

A wintry scene on the Druid Hills Golf Course.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

I have to admit that this picture was taken several years ago — we’ve got the cold temperatures but not the snow.  The weather forecasts say we’ll get some snow tonight and tomorrow, but Betsy is skeptical.  She’ll believe it when she sees it.

The pond is one of the water hazards on the front nine of the Druid Hills Golf Course here in the Glade.  Betsy and I had taken a walk to enjoy the beautiful snowfall.  It was obviously warmer than it’s been for the past week.  But then, we were several years younger and could tolerate the cold better.

Darla at More Family and Flowers has issued a challenge for bloggers to end each post with something for which they grateful.  I think that is a wonderful idea and I’ll try to remember to add a gratitude each day.  I’m grateful for my beautiful bride who can make even a snowy day bright and sunny.

My World: Is Not White

December 29, 2009

Our front yard, Fairfield Glade. December 28, 2009.

This is my post for the My World meme.  It is hosted by Klaus, Ivar, Sandy, Wren, Louise and Fishing Guy.  To learn more about our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.

If you were to ask Betsy what was wrong with the picture above, she would have a very succinct answer:  THERE’S NO SNOW! In spite of heavy snows north and east of us, we have only had a dusting or two.  It’s officially winter and the temperatures have been low, but the grass is still relatively green.  The roses have been cut back and covered, but not all of them have gone dormant yet.

What’s worse, there’s no snow on the mountains we can see from the road in front of the house.  They look as bleak and bare as they have since the trees lost all their leaves.

The only white to be seen is in the clouds scurrying across the beautiful blue winter sky.

Scenic Sunday # 73: Double Happiness

December 6, 2009

Snow and pine needles, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. December 5, 2009.

This is my post for the Scenic Sunday meme, which shares beautiful scenes from around the world.  To see more Scenic Sunday posts, or to join and show your own pictures, click HERE.

This may not appear to be much to you, but it is very beautiful and scenic to my beautiful bride, who just loves snow.  We woke up Saturday morning to an inch or two of the white stuff and Betsy was over-joyed.  Unfortunately (for her) the snow probably won’t be around for long, but she is ever-hopeful that more will soon come.

Jen's calendar and the almanac.

The mailman brought a second happy event for the day.  Jen, who blogs on unglazed, had a giveway a week of so ago and I was fortunate enough to win.  The gift is a 2010 calendar of photos Jen has taken.  To say that each photo is beautiful is really an understatement.  Jen takes wonderful pictures of the birds in her area and I encourage you to visit her site if you haven’t done so.  Jen also included a copy of the Farmer’s Almanac.  Jen knows how much Betsy likes snow and wants her to know when the snow will arrive!

Thanks again, Jen.

Watery Wednesday # 21

Pond along the fourth hole of the Druid Hills Golf Course.

Pond along the fourth hole of the Druid Hills Golf Course.

We had some snow here in the Glade on Monday.  It wasn’t a lot, but it was Betsy’s favorite type of snow — wet, big flakes that stick to everything except the roads.  The trees and bushes in our yard and along the street.

The picture above, which can be enlarged by clicking on it, gives a good idea of what things looked like around here.  This is another picture from the Druid Hills golf course, but this is on the front nine, which I don’t visit quite as often.

I don’t appreciate snow as much as Betsy does, but I have to admit that walking in a snow like this is a peaceful experience.  It’s a wonderful way to appreciate the beauty of our world.

A Snow Day

January 29, 2009
River Hills golf course, Little River, South Carolina. January 25, 2000/

River Hills golf course, Little River, South Carolina. January 25, 2000.

We got caught in some snow and ice on our way home from the grocery snow today.  It got to be interesting for a while, but we made it home safe and sound.  Of course the schools in the county closed early (at 10a.m.) before the bad weather got here.

That got me to thinking — when was the last time I got off because of snow?

I honestly don’t remember missing school because of snow when I was growing up in northern Indiana.  I do remember lots of snow as a youngster, but I also remember snowplows quickly clearing the roads.  I may have missed some days when in elementary school, but I honestly don’t remember any.

I know I didn’t miss any school because of snow while I was in high school.  Although I lived out in the country, the high school was a city school and they NEVER closed.  If the buses didn’t run, I went to school anyway — Dad felt we lived close enough for me to walk.  I got a perfect attendance award when I graduated.

When I went to college almost all students lived on campus — no snow days.  I taught high school in Cleveland, Ohio, after graduating — they always had school.

We had snow when I taught in North Carolina and Ohio, but both of those colleges were resident colleges, so the students were on campus and no snow days.

Now that I think of it, I can think of only one day when I missed work because of snow — January 25, 2000.  What made that day memorable was that at the time I was working at a company in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!  I was just about to the plant when I heard on the radio that the plant was closed for the day and that no one should try to come in to work since the building would be locked.  So I did what any kid would do — I went home and went out in the snow.  That’s when I took the picture above on the River Hills golf course in Little River, South Carolina.  It was the first snow on the Grand Strand in ten years.

Watery Wednesday # 19

January 20, 2009
The 14th fairway of Druid Hills. February, 2006.

The 14th fairway of Druid Hills. February, 2006.

We finally got some snow here in the Glade — not much, but enough to give us a white coating.

The picture above (which can be enlarged by clicking on it) was taken in 2006, but it is representative of the way things looked yesterday and today.  The picture was taken on the 14th fairway of the Druid Hills golf course.  (I wonder how many golf balls are at the bottom of that pond?)

I like this picture because of the gray skies, the white coating of snow, the bare trees, the dark waters and the reflection in the water.  All in all it does a pretty good job of showing why we think the Glade is beautiful any time of the year.

My World # 14

Our roses in the snow. January 19, 2009.

This is my posting for the My World meme, which last week had 102 people sharing their worlds with us. To join in, click HERE.

As most of you know, my beautiful bride loves snow.  She has been disappointed by the lack of snow this winter.  But we finally got some during the day on Monday, as you can see from the picture above.  So Betsy is now feeling a little happier, although she’s hoping for an additional 3 or 4 inches!

I have to admit that I’m not as enthusiastic about the snow as Betsy is.  The picture also shows a part of one of our rose beds, and the roses sure do look cold.  I want to see them green and in bloom!

Snow on our jasmine bush. January 19, 2009.

Snow on our jasmine bush. January 19, 2009.

I know Betsy would like to have more snow, so I tried to make it look as if we had more snow than we actually did by taking this close up of snow on the jasmine bush.

My world this week was gray, cloudy and cold.  I’m hoping it will be brighter, sunnier and warmer next week!

Something to Cheer Up Betsy

December 15, 2008

Yesterday was not a good day for Betsy.  Her Titans lost their football game by one point!  And to make matters worse, it is the middle of December, there’s precipitation coming, and the temperatures are in the 50’s.  Betsy wants snow!  How can it snow with temperatures like this?  It’s depressing!!!

I really want to cheer Betsy up, but I’m not sure how to go about doing so.  I certainly can’t change the outcome of the football game, and I don’t have the talent necessary to make it snow on demand.

decksnow

About the best I can do is post this picture to give Betsy hope.  This picture was taken on the deck of our house in February, 2006, and it shows that we actually can get a nice snowfall here in the Glade.  So don’t give up hope, Betsy!

One more thing.  Although I don’t know how to make it snow outside, I do know how to make it snow on this blog.  So if the weatherman won’t cooperate, Betsy can watch it snow here!

SkyWatch Friday

skywatch

This is my first submission to SkyWatch.  Although I enjoy taking pictures I’m definitely an amateur and am never sure of how much interest my pictures would be to others.  I have, however, seen some beautiful photographs on Skywatch and have decided to give it a try.  To see some of these beautiful pictures click on the image above or click on SKYWATCH.

I took the picture below in February, 2006, as Betsy and I walked around the back nine of the golf course behind our  house.  I was struck by the light separating the clouds from the mountains.  We’ve had gray and rainy skies for two days now, but Betsy is really hoping for snow.  It’s getting colder by the minute, but I’m not sure it will get cold enough for snow before the precipitation ends.
