Watery Wednesday #104: Genesee River

I went to my archives to get this picture from Letchworth State Park in New York.  It shows two waterfalls on the Genesee River below the railroad trestle in the background.  Middle Falls is in the foreground, while Upper Falls is partially hidden further upstream.  There is a third waterfall, Lower Falls, which is further downstream behind me as I took this picture.

Watery Wednesday #103: Foster Falls

We’ve had a very hot and dry summer here on the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee.  This has brought back memories of the severe drought we had in this are in 2006 – 2007.

The picture above was taken in August, 2006, and is of Foster Falls.  Foster Falls is one of the largest waterfalls (in terms of volume of water) in the state, but on this visit there was barely a trickle of water.

The pool did capture a nice reflection, however.

Watery Wednesday #102: Campbell Falls

In April Betsy and I went to West Virginia on a waterfall hunt.  One of the places we visited was Camp Creek Resort State Park near Princeton, West Virginia.  The park contains Campbell Falls, a pretty little waterfall.  There wasn’t a lot of water going over the falls, and the picture above shows only one branch of the falls, but the water was so clear that the bottom of the creek could be clearly seen.

Down Memory Lane: Our 2006 Anniversary Trip

2006 was an interesting year for Betsy and me.  My job ended since I didn’t want to move to Memphis and so I retired instead.

Retirement made it possible for us to celebrate our anniversary by taking a trip, which we did for the first time.  Our friends Judy and Charlie invited us to their cabin near Franklin, North Carolina.  Since Franklin is in the heart of the mountains of western North Carolina and there are many waterfalls to visit, we quickly accepted their invitation.

During our visit to North Carolina we visited  waterfalls near Cherokee, North Carolina, at Deep Creek in the Smokies, in the Dupont State Forest in North Carolina.  We also stopped by a couple more waterfalls on our way home.

All in all it was a very successful trip.

Down Memory Lane: Fall Creek Falls

If you’ve visited my blog for any length of time you know that Fall Creek Falls State Park here in Tennessee is a very special places for Betsy and me.  Fall Creek Falls was the site of our first kiss back on April 21, 2001, and it was the beginning of our waterfall collection.

Since I’ve been retired we try to get back there each April 21 to celebrate and remember that special day.  The collage above was made from pictures taken on April 21, 2009.

Watery Wednesday #99: American Falls

The American Falls at Niagara is one of the most photographed waterfalls in the world.  This picture was taken near the base of the falls.  The billowing spray gives some indication of the power of the river going over that fall.

Down Memory Lane: North Georgia Waterfalls

In June, 2009, Betsy and I went to North Georgia.  We wanted to visit Tallulah Gorge State Park for our anniversary.  As we usually do, we visited some waterfalls on our way.  We stayed in Dillard, Georgia and visited several waterfalls in that area.  The falls on Laurel Mountain were near the road, but Holcombe Creek Falls and Ammon Creek Falls involved a hike on a warm June day.  But we definitely thought the waterfalls were worth the hike.

Watery Wednesday # 96: Unicoi Falls

I’ve mentioned before that Betsy and I like to take the back roads when we travel, especially when we’re traveling through the mountains.  We usually travel the speed limit so the co-pilot has time to look around.

Many — if not most — Tennessee roads through the mountains have turnouts at fairly regular intervals.  That’s a good thing and we take advantage of them fairly often.

Last October we were traveling in the Cherokee National Forest in eastern Tennessee, when Betsy spotted Unicoi Falls as we rounded a curve.  There wasn’t anything I could do about it at that moment, but I spotted a turnout just ahead.  I pulled over and walked back to get this picture.

I realize there are times when a person has to take the Interstate.  But when possible — slow down, take a back road and enjoy the scenery!

Down Memory Lane: Mount Nebo Waterfalls

I’ve mentioned several times how much Betsy and I like going to Mount Nebo in Arkansas.  We always stay in a beautiful rustic cabin on the edge of the mountain where we can enjoy the fantastic views.

But as you might expect, if we keep going back there have to be some waterfalls as well.  There is a Waterfall Trail that leads down the mountain not too far from the cabin.  I usually hike that trail at least once during our stay and, if we spend the day on the mountain, will often hike it along with one of the other trails.

The Waterfall Trail leads past one pretty falls, Upper Nebo Falls,  on its way to the main drop, Mount Nebo Falls.  Since both are near the top of the mountain the water flow can be low during much of the year, but they are pretty in the early Spring.  The collage above was made from pictures I took of the waterfalls during our visit in March, 2009.

Watery Wednesday #93: Over the Falls

Last Friday I decided that Betsy needed to get out of the house for a while, so we took a drive to the Tellico River, another of our favorite spots here in Tennessee.  There are some waterfalls that can be seen from the road, so I felt Betsy would not have to do much walking.

One of those roadside waterfalls is Baby Falls, a pretty little 15-foot drop in the Tellico River.  There were swimmers enjoying the plunge pool, but what caught our attention was a group of kayakers shooting the falls.

By the time I got into position to take pictures there was only one person left to shoot the falls.  I got this series of shots as he went over the brink.

I didn’t have time to change the settings on my camera so I didn’t get a shot of the kayak at the base of the falls, but the kayaker was successful in shooting the falls, he landed upright and paddled across the plunge pool before continuing downstream.

I must admit that it looked very exciting, but I think I’ll continue to enjoy waterfalls while standing on solid ground!
