April 29, 2011

Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine, Florida. August 4, 2009.

I was working with some pictures taken back in August, 2009, when I came across this picture of a watch tower and walls of Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida.  Since I captured the fortress under a bright, but cloudy, Florida sky, I thought this was an appropriate picture for Skywatch Friday.

Betsy and I enjoyed our last blogging break so much that we are taking another.  Hopefully we’ll be back about May 9.

I went to my archives to get this picture of the evening sky in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.  It was cloudy as the sun went down, but the sun still cast a nice reflection on the water among the boats anchored in the harbor.

I’ve mentioned before that the weather wasn’t exactly cooperative during our trip to Mount Nebo in Arkansas.  The day we drove there was partly cloudy, but when we went to Sunset Point we found that the sun was setting behind a thick bank of clouds.  But those same clouds gave us the beautiful sight in the picture above.

Later the clouds parted enough to allow us to see this golden glow from our cabin.  Sunsets from Mount Nebo are always special.

The weather was not very cooperative during the time we were in Arkansas.  We had several dreary days with rain and fog.  But on the last evening we were there the setting sun made a valiant effort to cut through the fog and mist.  The sun broke through enough to cause a nice reflection on the wet rocks at the rim of the mountain.

SkyWatch Friday: Spring-Time Evening Sky

Everything in Spring seems bright and beautiful.  Last Saturday evening we were walking on the golf course behind our house at sunset.  The sun was dropping below the Plateau, and the eastern sky was turning dark.  But the sun was still hitting some of the clouds in the western sky.  All in all it was a beautiful evening.

Skywatch Friday: A Cloudy Mountain Morning

When Betsy surprised me with a birthday trip to Amicalola State Park in Georgia last week, we had a room at the mountain top lodge with a view of the mountains.  This picture was taken through the window last Thursday (March 10).  The clouds were threatening, but had lifted enough the at we could see across the valley to the mountains on the other side.

This has been a very busy week with little time to work on the computer, so I’ve selected a picture from my archives for Skywatch.

The picture above was taken shortly after sunrise as our cruise ship approached the island of Antigua in the Caribbean.  I really like the peach/pink color on the forward edge of the clouds.

One evening while Betsy and I were at the beach, an almost full-moon was playing peekaboo with the clouds.  I captured this picture from the balcony of our room.

One of the joys of going to the beach in December was being able to watch a sunrise from the balcony of our room.  The sky was painted gorgeous colors before the sun broke through the clouds on the horizon.

This picture of the morning sky was taken at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, on December 23, 2010.

There is nothing quite as beautiful as blue skies in February.  We haven’t had many beautiful blue sky days this winter, but last weekend was an exception.  I went out in the morning and couldn’t believe how blue the sky was behind our house.  Of course I had to rush back in and grab my camera.

The trees are still bare, and they haven’t shown any signs of buds yet, but these blue skies give me hope.
