A couple of weeks ago I shared some pictures of St. Maarten from our honeymoon cruise in 2001.  We were on St. Maarten on 9/11, which made for a very surreal day.

Our first port of call was Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands.  While there we took a sea plane ride in the morning over some of the other nearby islands.  In the afternoon we took a tram to Paradise Point, a park and overlook that offered some fantastic views of the harbor and ocean.

The picture above was taken on the seawall of Charleston Harbor in Charleston, South Carolina.  It shows some of the beautiful homes on East Battery Street, many of which date back to the Civil War.  Fort Sumter, site of the first shots of the Civil War, is in the harbor off to the right.  Behind me and to the left is White Point Gardens, more commonly known as The Battery.

I lived in South Carolina for three years and have visited Charleston several times.  It’s a beautiful city and I thoroughly enjoy walking through the the historic district (as long as it’s not too hot!).

The picture above was taken in June, 2008, when Betsy and I visited Charleston on our anniversary trip.  If you would like to see some more scenes from the area around The Battery, click HERE.

Betsy, in her blog yesterday, told about our day on September 11, 2001.  The beauty of St. Maarten in  the Caribbean was a surreal contrast to the events taking place in the United States.

The picture above was taken as our ship was leaving Philipsburg, our port of call in St. Maarten.   In spite of all the tragedy of the day,  This scene gave us a sense of calm and peace.

The picture above was taken this past May at Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina.  It was a perfect morning with clouds on the horizon, a calm, blue ocean, and a clean beach all to ourselves.

The picture above was taken in 2001 on the island of St. Lucia.  Betsy and I were on our honeymoon cruise and had gone ashore to tour a plantation near the town of Soufriere.  The mountain is Gran Piton, one of two mountains that mark the entrance to the harbor.  You can see a stretch of a tropical beach in the lower right of the picture.

We spent Betsy’s birthday (August 5) at Ormond Beach, Florida.  Betsy likes the beach almost as much as she likes the mountains, so since we were going to Florida to see her brother Ray, we decided to celebrate her birthday at the beach.

The photo above was taken from our room looking north along the beach.  We thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful beach, which was very clean and had surprisingly few people on the beach.

After enjoying the view from our room, we went down to the beach to get some sun and to get wet in the Atlantic.  Here you can see Betsy getting ready for her time in the sun.

This final picture was taken on the beach looking south toward Daytona Beach.  I’ll have to admit that I really enjoyed Betsy’s birthday at this scenic spot.  I hope Betsy enjoyed it as well.

The picture above was taken at the Dillard House, in Dillard, Georgia.  I’ve mentioned the fabulous meal we had there, but the scenery is almost as good as the view.  After our meal we walked around the inn enjoying the view in the evening light.  The Dillard House is located in the Little Tennessee Valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The picture above, taken in front of the restaurant, looks across the valley to the mountains in the distance.

I consider the photo above to be both scenic and appropriate for today.  That is the flag that flies from our flagpole here in the Glade.  The picture above was taken last January as you can tell from the trees.  I didn’t get a picture yesterday to use with this post.

One of the first things Dad did after he got us moved into the house he was building was put up a flagpole in the front yard.  My younger brother, Ken, and I had the job of putting up the flag each morning when the weather was good and taking it down and folding it in the evening.

Mom and Dad continued to fly their flag daily until they both lost their sight.  Ken still flies a flag at his house as do Betsy and I.  Our flag gets weathered over the year and so we have the tradition of flying a new flag each Flag Day.  There are now leaves on the trees around our house and the sky is not quite as blue as it is in this picture, but that new ‘Old Glory’ still looks pretty against the sky.

I know it’s old-fashioned, but I still thrill to see that flag unfurling in the breeze.

I lived in Black Mountain, North Carolina, from 1972 – 1985 and learned to love the mountains of western North Carolina.  So when our friends Judy and Charlie invited us to join them for a few days at their cabin near Otto, North Carolina, it didn’t take us long to take them up on their offer!

The picture above is the view from their deck, looking west in the not-so-early morning.  But the mountains and the Carolina Blue sky make it a scene to enjoy over and over again.
