Skywatch Friday: Glade Skies

April 16, 2010

Blue skies in Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. Aporil 14, 2010.

We’ve had summer-ike weather for several days now.  Looking up showed a blue sky with some small white clouds.  It also showed that the trees are leafing out very nicely.

Later in the afternoon the clouds got a little bigger and some even got a little darker.  We didn’t get any rain, but I did get some good sky pictures.

Skywatch Friday: Smokies Sky

I’ve been working in the yard this week and neglected to get any pictures of our beautiful skies.  But I found this picture in my archives that shows the sky and clouds very similar to what we’ve been enjoying.  This picture was taken this past October at an overlook above Cheoah Lake in the Smokies.

Skywatch Friday: We Found Spring

Blue Sky and Bradford Pears, Hendersonville, Tennessee.

Yesterday Betsy and I went to Hendersonville to see my parents.  They are about as good as can be expected and we had a nice visit with them.

But in addition to seeing my parents, we also found Spring!  We live on the Plateau here in Tennessee while Hendersonville is in the ‘Nashville Bowl’.  What that means is that our house is about 1500 feet higher than my parents house.

When we left yesterday morning there were no Bradford Pears blooming here in the Glade and the Forsythia was just starting to bud out.  By the time we got off the Plateau we were seeing Bradford Pear trees in bloom all over the place.  We were also seeing blue skies, as in the photo above.

Forsythia, Hendersonville, Tennessee.

We also found Forsythia in bloom.  What a difference 1500 feet can make!

Our Prius is not a large car, but we did our best to bring Spring back up the Plateau with us.  I can hardly wait to see what today brings!

Skywatch Friday: Approaching Storm

Storm Clouds Approaching Bali. June, 1987

I went to my archives to get this picture for my Skywatch post.  In 1987, on my way to China for the first time, I was able to spend a few days in Bali.  Our group stayed at a place on the beach and we were able to enjoy the sky, sand and sea.  Late one afternoon I was on the beach just before a storm came in.  I like the light breaking through the clouds and the ridges in the sand.

The scene above may not appear to be much to many of you, but we think it’s absolutely  gorgeous.  Yesterday (Thursday) was the first day in a week in which we were able to see blue sky.  And it was the first time in a week in which the clouds were white instead of gray or black.  In short, the sky was beautiful.  I hope we soon have many more days like this.

My Dad got a good report from the doctor and we found Mom and Dad to both be in good spirits.  We were able to run some errands and help with some chores around the house, so it was a good and productive visit.

Today I’m grateful for each opportunity I have to spend a day with my parents.

Skywatch Friday: Moon in Blue Skies

The moon in blue skies over Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas. February 24, 2010.

I’ve mentioned several times our visit to Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas in late February.  We enjoyed waterfalls, hikes, fascinating rock formations and sunshine and blue skies.  Near the Turtle Rocks we also saw this beautiful moon in the blue sky.

Skywatch Friday: Chimes, Icicles and Blue Skies

We had blue skies and sunshine on Thursday — we hardly knew what to do.  Even more amazing was the fact that the temperature got above freezing for the first time in about 10 days.

The result of all that warmth and sunshine was this giant icicle engulfing a wind chime on the south-east corner of our house.  I don’t know which impressed more — the blue sky or the icicle.  By the end of the day the snow on the roof of our neighbor’s house was gone, but much of the icicle was still there.

Skywatch Friday: Blue Skies, Icy Trees

The view from our front yard, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. January 31, 2010.

There was a brightness in the sky behind the clouds and haze that’s been there all month.  After doing some research I believe that brightness is something called the ‘sun’.  I didn’t have my camera with me to get a picture, but I’ll continue to do research on this phenomenon.

I had to go back to the last day of January to get a decent picture for sky watch.  This picture was taken after our big snow and ice storm.  For one day we had gorgeous blue skies, which made a great background for all the icy branches on the trees.

Skywatch Friday: A Cloudy Day

The last couple of days have been cloudy, dull and gray.  That’s not exactly my favorite type of day, but I think there is often a stark beauty about such a day.  The picture above was taken on the 14th fairway of the Druid Hills Golf Course here in the Glade.

Skywatch Friday: Before the Storm

A winter moon over Fairfield Glade.

We’re being threatened with a winter storm here in the Glade.  The weather service says we could get several inches of snow with an inch or so of ice thrown in for good measure.  Betsy would dearly love to see the snow, but she is not at all interested in the ice.  To tell the truth, I don’t look forward to ice either.

But all of this is in the future as I write this.  Tonight (Thursday) the skies are clear and the moon is full.  I hope the memory of this beautiful night will help me get through the next couple of days.

I’m grateful that we can look up see beauty even in a dark sky.
