Scenic Sunday # 124: On Top of the World

November 28, 2010

The view from Mount Mitchell, North Carolina. October 22, 2010.

Last week Betsy and I made a quick trip to Asheville, North Carolina.  We went primarily to see the Christmas decorations in the Biltmore House, but we also took a ride up the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We drove to Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet.

It was fairly late on a cloudy afternoon when we reached the observation deck at the peak.  The mountains seemed to be reaching up to the clouds for as far as we could see.

The interplay of sun and clouds made for some interesting patterns on the smaller mountains around Mount Mitchell.

Every once in a while the clouds parted enough to let some blue sky peek through.

Scenic Sunday #121: Cataloochie Valley

I posted about the elk we saw in the Cataloochee Valley of the Smoky Mountains a couple of weeks ago.  But our visit to the valley was scenic for more reasons than the elk.  The morning of our visit was foggy and misty, which showed one explanation for the name of the mountains surrounding the valley.

The picture above was taken at the meadow along Ranger Station Road where we saw the largest herd of elk.  The picture is looking east past the meadow.

This second photo is taken from another meadow on the same road.  This meadow is past the Caldwell House and this photo looks northeast.

The southwest view from the same meadow gave this picture of the mountains amid mist and clouds .

Scenic Sunday #120: Autumn Reflections

Betsy and I came home from our stay in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, on the Cherohala Skyway which goes over the mountains from North Carolina to Tennessee.

The autumn colors were beautiful, but I also had the chance to see those colors reflected in various bodies above.

The picture above was taken at Santeetlah Lake near Robbinsville, North Carolina, before we reached the skyway.

Tellico River, Tellico Plains, Tennessee. October 21, 2010.

As we neared the Tennessee end of the skyway, we turned off to go with Patti and Neal to Bald River Falls near Tellico Plains, Tennessee.  After visiting the falls, we drove along Tellico River Road as we headed toward home.  The sun was beginning to drop behind the mountains, putting parts of the river in shadow.  I found a pullout so I could stop and capture this second picture.

Scenic Sunday #117: Paradise Point

The harbor at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, from Paradise Point. September 10, 2001.

When we took our Caribbean cruise, we had a port of call at Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.  While there we took a tram up to Paradise Point above the town.

Paradise Point has an observation deck and walking paths that give wonderful views of the harbor and out to sea.  This picture was taken looking down on the cruise ship dock.  Our ship is the one on the extreme right.

Scenic Sunday # 116: Golden Sunrise

We celebrated Betsy’s birthday last year by going to Ormond Beach, Florida.  We had a room that overlooked the ocean and got up early on the day of Betsy’s birthday to see the sunrise.  The sea was calm, and just before the sun popped out of the clouds offshore, the water took on a golden sheen.

All in all it was a great start to a special day for my special girl.

Scenic Sunday #115: We Had to Settle for a Rainbow

Rainbow at Cumberland Falls State Park, Kentucky. September 25, 2010.

Betsy and I spent a couple of days in Kentucky enjoying the beautiful scenery and doing some hiking.  We first went to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, where Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia come together in the mountains.  We visited a historic community, enjoyed the view from the Pinnacle, and hiked along the Wilderness Road.

The reason we went to Kentucky when we did was we wanted to see the moonbow at Cumberland Falls State Park.  Cumberland Falls is one of two places in the world with a predictable moonbow.  A moonbow is a rainbow produced by the light of a full moon hitting mist rising from the base of the falls.  In order to get a moonbow, the moon has to be full and the sky clear.

As luck would have it, we were at Cumberland Falls on Friday night — a night with cloudy skies and a few sprinkles.  There was no moonbow that night, but we will probably go back in the future to try again.

Even though we did miss out on the moonbow, we did see this pretty rainbow when we visited the falls the next morning.  That was impressive enough to make up for the lack of a moonbow.

Scenic Sunday #114: The Mountains

Although Betsy and I go to the beach each year, we really like the mountains.  I guess that’s a good thing since we live in eastern Tennessee.  The mountains in the picture above are in western North Carolina.  This picture was taken in July near Burnsville, North Carolina.

Scenic Sunday #112: Gros Piton

Gros Piton, and its smaller twin, Petit Piton, are iconic symbols of the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia.  They guard the entrance to the bay leading to the town of Soufrière on the west coast.  This picture was taken from a catamaran as it approached the bay after a cruise along the coast.

Scenic Sunday # 109: Autumn on the Parkway

View from the Fork Ridge Overlook, Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina. October 25, 2009.

Although some parts of the country have gotten some relief from the impressive heat, that relief hanse’t reached the Plateau here in East Tennessee.  So I’m looking at pictures from other seasons hoping to feel a little cooler.

The picture above was taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina this past October.  I like the mountain ridges receding into background.  The picture shows why these mountains are called the Blue Ridge.

Scenic Sunday #107: Dillard House Gazebo

The gazebo above is on the grounds of the Dillard House in Dillard, Georgia.  The house is in a beautiful mountain setting near Rabun Gap in north Georgia.  If you every want a delicious meal of southern cooking, the Dillard House is the place to go.  Just make sure you have a hearty appetite.

After a wonderful meal a walk around the grounds is made to order.  This gazebo is a great spot to relax and enjoy the view.
