SkyWatch Friday: Sky and Water

February 11, 2011

Looking out to sea from Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. December 22, 2010.

When Betsy and I were at the beach in December, we had one very cloudy, dreary day.  I went for a walk along the beach and noticed the difference in the sky over head and a little off shore.  Over the beach the clouds were dark and gray, but out a little way they were a golden orange.

But light does interesting things.  If you look closely at the water on the beach itself you will see the golden orange of the sky reflected in the ripples at the beach.

Skywatch Friday: Snow and Blue Skies

Although we’ve had a fair amount of snow this year (but not enough for Betsy), the skies have been dreary and gray.  So I went to my archives to get this picture taken from our deck of a new snow under a blue Tennessee sky.

Scenic Sunday #132: Looking Toward The Smokies

January 30, 2011

The view of the Smoky Mountains from the Foothills Parkway, Townsend, Tennessee. October 14, 2010.

In mid-October of last year Betsy and I took a ride along the Foothills Parkway.  The Parkway is west of, and parallel to, the Smoky Mountains and provides some wonderful views of the mountains.  Since the Parkway is at a fairly low altitude, there wasn’t much color, but the scenery was beautiful nonetheless.

After sunset in Sunset Beach

When Betsy and I visit the beach in May, there is always daylight when we go to dinner and even afterward.  Things were much different in December.  The sun had already set one evening as we were going to dinner, but the glow in the sky and the reflection in the water caught my eye as we drove through Sunset Beach, North Carolina.  On that evening, at least, the name of the beach was very appropriate.

Skywatch Friday: Repulse Bay

Repulse Bay, Hong Kong. June, 1987

I went to my archives for this picture of a cloudy sky.  The picture was taken in Hong Kong at Repulse Bay.  Before I went there the first time, I thought Hong Kong was nothing but crowded streets and high-rise apartments — this scenic spot was a pleasant surprise.  The pretty sky was a nice bonus.

The picture above was scanned from a slide.

One advantage to posting on Skywatch Friday, is that we become more aware of the sky and the beauty that is in it on just about every day.  I recently came across an archived file of sky photos from 2009.  I used that file to create the collage above.

Betsy and I were on our way to Crossville late one afternoon a couple of weeks ago when we noticed the pink clouds near the setting sun.  Fortunately we found a parking lot where we could get a good view of the sun and the clouds, and where I captured this image.

We were treated to a spectacular sunrise on our last morning at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  We had an ocean view room at the Islander Inn, and the sun came  up just about opposite our balcony.  The rising sun seems like an appropriate first post for the new year, and so I share it with you.

Skywatch Friday: Full Moon Eclipse

As you know, Monday night – Tuesday morning of last week was somewhat special.  We had an eclipse of the full moon.

Betsy and I saw the full moon when we went out to dinner Monday night.  But since we had had a long drive that day, we went to bed before the eclipse began.  However, we got up about 3 o’clock in the morning and went out to see the tail end of the eclipse.  The picture above was taken at that time on Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.

Betsy and I were on the interstate on our way home from Asheville last month when we saw this beautiful sunset near Knoxville, Tennessee.  We were fortunate to be able to find a spot where we could pull off and get this picture.

Betsy and I will be taking a blogging break for the next few days.  But we hope you will all have a very Merry and Blessed Christmas.
