Betsy’s Birds IV

September 10, 2008

A goldfinch at our thistle mesh bag. September 9, 2008.

I’ve written several times about Betsy’s new-found infatuation with birds.  I have to admit that right now the birds rank right up there with the weather as far as Betsy is concerned.

I think Betsy’s favorite bird at the moment is the cardinal.  But for several weeks we’ve had glimpses of a goldfinch in the yard.  We’ve never been able to get a picture of it until yesterday.  The picture above isn’t very good, but we did at least get a picture.  After we got this picture we saw two goldfinch around a different feeder, but couldn’t get a good picture because of the screen between us and the feeder.

The bird is getting thistle seeds from the mesh bag.  Evidently goldfinch are particularly fond of thistles, because Betsy got another feeder and filled it with a mixture including thistle seeds and that quickly got the attention of the goldfinches.

The American Goldfinch is a gregarious bird and can be found in small groups during the breeding season and in flocks during the winter.  Hopefully they will continue to be attracted by Betsy’s feeders year around.

A New Man in Betsy’s Life!

Hurricane Gustav coming ashore. September 1, 2008.

Hurricane Gustav coming ashore. September 1, 2008.

Betsy has a new man in her life!

I didn’t realize, until after we were married, what a ‘weather’ person Betsy is.  She is absolutely fascinated by weather — all kinds of weather.  She has several weather widgets on her computer desktop.  I can’t count the number of weather sites she has bookmarked in her internet browser.  But I do know that the Weather Channel is her favorite television channel!

I must admit that I found Betsy’s fascination with weather to be slightly amusing.  Huricanes, blizzards, rainstorms and floods all get her attention.  Of course, since she used to live in New Orleans, anything effecting that city really gets her attention.  She was delighted to find that DirecTV was broadcasting a local New Orleans station with hurricane coverage nationwide.  She watched that quite a bit Sunday evening.

Still, I didn’t think too much about Gustav until very early yesterday morning.  About 4 o’clock I heard a noise in the living room and woke up to find my bride watching New Orleans television coverage of Gustav!!!

Gustav will still cause a lot of rain in Louisiana and Texas, but I for one am glad the main infatuation is over.  The next hurricane is Hanna, so that doesn’t worry me so much.  But they’ve just announced that hurricane Ike is on the way.  I wonder how much sleep I’ll get when he gets here?

Betsy’s Birds III

A male cardinal on our deck. August 28, 2008.

A male cardinal on our deck. August 28, 2008.

As I’ve mentioned before, Betsy has become fascinated with birds.  She started with hummingbirds a couple of years ago, but has moved on to other species as well.  She started putting out bird seed on the deck and then got a seed bell.  Since then she has been quite successful in attracting birds onto our deck to have a snack.

We also got a bird bath for the back yard which also attracts its share of ‘customers’.  All in all it’s possible to see quite a bit of feathered activity on our deck or in the back yard.  When Betsy is not watching her feathered friends she is online trying to identify the birds she’s seen.

We’ve seen a pair of cardinals for a couple of weeks, but apparently cardinals are shy birds and we couldn’t get close enough to get a picture.  But it rained all day Tuesday and we had errands to run yesterday morning, so it was nearly noon before Betsy was able to put out her bird seed.  I guess the birds missed some meals and were hungry because we had quite a few enjoying their meal.  And to our surprise even the cardinals showed up for a snack and the male stuck around long enough for us to get the picture above.

I wonder what species Betsy will attract next?

Celebrating Monthaversaries

August 24, 2008
Our wedding day -- June 23, 2001.

Our wedding day -- June 23, 2001.

Since I was 59 when Betsy and I got married, we realized we probably wouldn’t have as many anniversaries as some couples do. (Mom and Dad celebrated their 68th anniversary this past May!). So we decided to celebrate monthaversaries on the 23rd of each month as well as anniversaries.

Our celebration usually consists of going out for dinner. It doesn’t have to be a fancy restaurant — just something to remind us of how fortunate we are and how much we have to celebrate.

Yesterday we celebrated our 86th monthaversary by going to Cookeville and eating at the Golden Corral Restaurant (Betsy just loves the cheese-garlic biscuits and the peanut butter cookies). Since we’re both senior citizens the cost was very reasonable and the air conditioning in the car on the drive over gave us a chance to get a break from the hot weather.

It wasn’t a spectacular celebration, but it was definitely special. I’m already looking forward to our next monthaversary celebration.

Betsy’s Critters

A visitor in our front yard. August 18, 2008.

We had a visitor in our front yard. August 18, 2008.

Oh, the joys of living in the woods. I’ve already talked about the things we had to go through to find sunny spots for our roses. But that turned out to be simple compared to some of the other ‘joys’.

Take, for example, the critters. I’ve already mentioned Betsy’s birds — the feathered critters that come to visit the feeders Betsy has put out. But there are other critters as well.

We can’t say we weren’t warned. The first time we came to look at the house we saw three deer in the lot next door. (Do you have any idea how many flowers deer can eat in a single night?). For the first couple of years Betsy was enthralled by the ‘cute’ chipmunks and squirrels. (Do you have any idea how many bulbs those ‘cute’ critters can dig up in a single night?).

We’ve had visits from rabbits (they ate Betsy’s impatiens so they weren’t called cute) and woodchucks (did you know they eat roses?). In the summer we have an occasional midnight visit from a skunk (not pleasant with open windows) and earlier this year we discovered a family of bats behind one of our shutters.

So yesterday when Betsy excited called “Come here and look at this” I wasn’t sure what I would see. What I found was the turtle in the picture above, walking across our front yard. We don’t know where he came from, but that is one critter I may be able to live with!!

Betsy’s Birds II

Tufted Titmice on our deck. August 16, 2008.

Tufted Titmice on our deck. August 16, 2008.

I mentioned a few days ago that Betsy was fascinated with the hummingbirds that visit the feeders she put up around our deck. She just loves those hummingbirds.

But she has broadened her interests since then. There was a base for a bird bath behind our house when we moved in, but we never got the top for it until about a week ago. We finally got the top and set up the bird bath and Betsy has been keeping a close watch on it. She got very excited when she saw a cardinal using the bath. Unfortunately it flew away before she could get her camera!

A couple of days ago we were at Lowe’s and Betsy saw a bird-seed bell — bird seed pressed into the shape of a bell. Since she knew we had many small birds around the house, she got one and put it up on the deck.

The cardinal visited the bell a time or two, but the stars have been Tufted Titmice. These little birds absolutely love the the new seed bell. We’re not really sure how many titmice are around, but we counted six different birds on one occasion.

So for the time being at least, Betsy is in ‘bird heaven’. But there are some disadvantages for her. As she looks from the hummingbird feeders, to the bird bath, to the seed bell, Betsy is in danger of getting whiplash!!!

My Internet-Trained Nurse

August 13, 2008

Those of you who know Betsy know she is an avid internet researcher.  If there is a subject you’re not sure about, a quick Google inquiry by Betsy can make you an expert.

Betsy did research on hernias before my recent surgery, so we had a pretty good idea about what needed to be done.  After my surgery she did more research to check on what the surgeon told her.

And she’s still hard at work.  I had fifteen surgical staples removed on Monday and the surgical dressing left all kinds of adhesive on my stomach.  As a result my shirt would stick to me, which wasn’t always pleasant.  Alcohol didn’t seem to work in getting the adhesive off, so my nurse went to the the internet and Google.  Cellophane tape was suggested — put it over the adhesive and s-l-o-w-l-y remove the tape.  That wasn’t my favorite procedure, but it did seem to help.  Another internet suggestion that helped somewhat was clear nail polish remover.

Although things are now better, we didn’t get off all the adhesive.  But I shouldn’t worry — Betsy has two more internet-inspired possibilities:  vegetable oil or peanut butter.

Did I say I shouldn’t worry?

Betsy’s Birds

August 7, 2008

Betsy likes birds.  (I’m not sure what that says about me, but I’m not going to go there!!!)

Three years ago Betsy got a couple of hummingbird feeders and was delighted when three or four hummingbirds started coming around to partake of the nectar she put into the feeders.  She would sit and watch them flit around nearly every day.  She got to the point where she could recognize different birds by the sound they made.

Last year we had some trouble with ‘critters’ getting into the hummingbird feeders so we got a different type that we could hang from the eaves of the house.  After we got those new feeders we saw a few hummingbirds, but not as many as the year before.

This year started out pretty dismally as far as hummingbirds were concerned.  We went for many weeks without seeing any.  Fortunately some bluebirds built a nest behind the house, and Betsy spent several afternoons watching the parents feed the baby bluebirds.  But three weeks ago the bluebird family moved out.

Fortunately the hummingbirds have now returned (see the picture above).  It seems to us that they came around later this year, but now we have at least four coming to the three feeders we can see from our living room.  The only thing I can’t understand is how they know when we have a camera with us.  As soon as they spot a camera they flee from the scene!

Who Put the Holes in the Rain Clouds?

July 27, 2008

Does anyone know a rain dance?  If so, I’d like to meet you.

We’ve been in a drought here on the Plateau for the past two years.  I’ll admit that last year was much worse than this year, but it’s still frustrating.

Last weekend we had, according to the weather men on TV, a 100% chance of rain.  It poured to the north, east and south of us.  It rained to the west of us, but we (Crossville reporting station) got exactly nothing.  This past Thursday afternoon weather radar showed Crossville directly between Knoxville and a storm in central Kentucky.  The sky overhead here got dark and parts of Knoxville got so much rain that there was flooding in the streets.  We got enough rain to make the driveway damp, but that was it.

Betsy is quite an avid weather-watcher and has a big weather radar on her computer desktop.  She always spots rain heading our way and tells me about it.  But as more and more of those storms bypass us, poor Betsy gets more and more discouraged.

I’m ready to try that rain dance.  We definitely need the rain.

What a Doll

July 20, 2008

See that adorable baby in the front seat of the car above?  That’s my beautiful bride with her father in Big Stone Gap.  Since Betsy and I are still in BSG, I couldn’t resist publishing this picture.

Both of Betsy’s parents had passed away by the time I met her, but I would have liked to have met them.  Doesn’t her father look like the proud Papa in this picture?  I’m sure he was, but I suspect he was wrapped around a certain girl’s finger as much as I am!
