SkyWatch Friday: Morning in the Mountains

March 2, 2012

Morning sky above Gatlinberg, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee. October 14, 2011.

The picture above was taken this past October on the Gatlinberg Bypass.  Betsy and I had gotten up early in the morning to see the autumn color in the Smokies.  The morning was cloudy and murky, and it looked as if we had picked a poor day for our trip.  But as we were taking the bypass around Gatlinberg, the sun broke through the clouds and blue skies started to appear.  I like the streaks of light on the mountain in the background and the sunny highlights in the foreground.

Down Memory Lane: Iris (2008)

February 27, 2012

One way to make winter days more bearable is to look through pictures taken on sunny summer days.  These are some of the iris that bloomed in our yard during the late spring of 2008.  We have more roses than iris, but we do enjoy the iris which bloom earlier than the roses.

Spring in the Glade

February 24, 2012

Our side flower bed under a blanket of snow. Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. February 19, 2012. (Photo by Betsy).

Betsy took the picture above this past Sunday.  These are some of the spring flowers that shot up during our mild winter.  Of course now that they are sending up flower stalks, we get snow and cold!

But one thing about Tennessee weather is that if you don’t like it stay around for a day — it will change.

Crocus in our side flower bed, Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. February 21, 2012.

This picture was taken on Tuesday.  The snow is gone and we have a crocus in bloom.  I actually saw a crocus in bloom before the snow storm, but I didn’t get a picture.  It didn’t survive the storm.

It rained most of Wednesday, and just after dark the warning sirens here in the Glade went off.  Fortunately all we got was more rain.

Yesterday was a bright, warm, sunny, Spring-like day.  I can hardly wait to see what today brings.

Hunting Waterfalls with Dad

February 13, 2012

Dad in our car visiting waterfalls, Tullahoma, Tennessee. February 9, 2012.

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

This past Thursday Betsy and I went down to Tullahoma to see Dad.  After helping him with some things around the house, we went out to lunch and then went for a ride.  Dad is legally blind, but he enjoys drives out into the countryside, so we took him along to visit a couple of waterfalls in the area.  He stayed in the car while Betsy and I were getting pictures of the waterfalls.  But since he was with us, I convinced him that I needed to get his picture as well.

Dad was more feeble when we saw him this time than he has been at other times, but since he’s going to be 100 in August that is to be expected.  He enjoyed being with us, just as we enjoyed being with him.

About the hat — one of Dad’s grandsons (my nephew) graduated from the Naval Academy in 2001 and gave Dad the hat, which he wears just about every time we go out.

Yesterday Betsy and I walked around two of the small lakes here in Fairfield Glade.    It was a beautiful but chilly day with bright sunshine and blue skies.

One of the lakes, Mirror Lake, has a fountain.  As we were walking back to our car I noticed a rainbow created by the fountain.  I was able to capture the rainbow in this photo.

Scenic Sunday: Looking Down on Cades Cove

Cades Cove is one of the most popular parts of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee.  The cove is a valley dotted with homesteads, churches, fields and woods.  It was turned into a living museum after the establishment of the park in the 1930s.  This picture was taken from Rich Mountain road leading out to Cades Cove.  If you look carefully you can see part of the loop road that takes visitors through the cove.

SkyWatch Friday: Icy Trees, Blue Skies

We’ve had a mild winter so far this year, and I’m not complaining,  But I will admit that snow — and even ice — can be beautiful as long as I don’t have to drive in it.  I took this picture in our yard a couple of years ago, and thing the icy branches look good against the blue sky.

Watery Wednesday: Rutledge Falls

After visiting Dad last week in Tullahoma, Betsy and I decided to swing by Rutledge Falls on our way home.  We had been there a couple of years ago, but thought since we’ve had a pretty wet year that there might be more water this time.  We were right.

Rutledge Falls is on private property, but the owners have made it accessible to the public.  We are thankful that they are willing to share this beauty with us.

SkyWatch Friday: Remembering Summer Skies

Even though it’s January with cold temperatures and gray skies, it’s nice to remember the blue skies and white clouds of summer.  This picture was taken in June here on the Cumberland Plateau not far from our house.

Watery Wednesday: Bald River Hike (Part II)

January 18, 2012

Bald River Falls, Tellico Plains, Tennessee. June 18, 2010.

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

As I mentioned in last week’s Watery Wednesday post, while Betsy, who was recovering from knee surgery, enjoyed Bald River Falls, I hiked along the river above the falls and found three other waterfalls and a cascade.  I told about the first waterfall and the cascade in that previous post.

The trail (Bald River Trail #88) got more difficult once I got above Bald River Cascades.  I did find two more waterfalls, but was not able to get real good views of either.

Suislide Falls, Tellico Plains, Tennessee. June 18, 2010.

I could only view Suislide Falls from the top of the falls.  Suislide (I have no idea how it got that name) Falls drops approximately 30 feet.  If I get back there I would like to see if I can bushwhack to the base of the falls, but I didn’t have time to try anything like that on this visit.

Shallow Falls, Tellico Plains, Tennessee. June 18, 2011.

Shallow Falls is immediately upstream from Suislide Falls.  It drops from 15 to 20 feet, and I was able to get a pretty good shot of it with my telephoto lens.  I would like to do some bushwhacking around this waterfall as well, but that, too, will have to wait for another time.

I was a little over half a mile from Bald River Falls when I spotted Shallow Falls, and it was time to head back to my Beautiful Bride.
